• This gloriousness is down by our mailbox. I ran for the camera when I saw these big New England asters. They always show up in early fall, but these blossoms are particularly large. That purple and gold combination can’t be beat. Goldenrod in the background.
• Turns out, I was mixed up on the day for the mini show. It runs on Saturday and Sunday, not today. And Don isn’t going into the city today, so basically everything I told you yesterday was a lie. I’ll go to the show tomorrow morning.
• There has been a bit of improvement on the professional front. One of the situations has been slightly resolved, though it was handled badly and I remain disappointed in the overall lack of communication. But, there’s a crack where maybe some light can get in. (Paraphrasing Leonard Cohen.)
• Second moonflower sighting this morning. More gloriousness. This one is high enough that I was able to breathe in the scent without contorting my body, as I had to do with the first flower.
• I urge you, really urge you, to read this extensive reporting in today’s New York Times. It’s running as a special section in Friday’s edition. Title: The Plot to Subvert an Election, Unraveling the Russia Story So Far. You will be stunned. This is what Mueller will flesh out, I’m sure, along with much, much more.
• I love receiving a package in the mail! This one was from reader Kim, who wrote me to say she had two egg cups she wanted to send my way. Goodness, you are all so generous! The box contained these beauties:
Each of them is hand painted and each has Fanny and Farmer written on the base.
“Farmer” is on the other side. You might recall that I have two other Fanny Farmer egg cups. These were part of their Easter tradition. Each year, a new design would come out, filled with chocolate eggs. Kim thinks they were also included in boxes of Fanny Farmer chocolates.
My very first egg cup was a Fanny Farmer egg cup, given to me as a wee child by my godparents. I held on to it for many, many years (ahem! we won’t say how many.) When I saw an article about collecting egg cups in a 2002 Martha Stewart Living magazine, one of the cups pictured was the same as mine and then I had the lightbulb realization that I could collect them. One of the very first egg cups I added to my collection was also by Fanny Farmer, a rooster in yellow and red, coincidentally made by McCoy.
So I’m thrilled to add two more FF cups. They’re already in the cabinet, Kim. Thank you so, so much!
Off to do a bit of mowing – really, just a bit.
Happy Friday.

wow … the details and depth on your photo of the asters is incredible! glad they popped up for you.
the fanny farmer egg cups are sweet, with a nice connection to a fond memory from your childhood.
glad you can enjoy the minis show this weekend. i enjoy antique/ “junk” and art shows, seeing what sells and maybe finding a little treat (but usually just looking anymore). there will be one here in november, but otherwise they’re done very early around here.
thanks for the link. will check it out.
do hope the job stuff works out the way you want and deserve.
happy mowing, happy friday.

wow again … on that article you linked … so detailed and so scary. would love to be like the proverbial “fly on the wall” to see their reactions when trump and his followers read stuff like that … and to then have a conversation with them about how they could still work for/support him.
thanks for the link.

Well, now it looks like the WH planted an article about Rosenstein. I’m sure they’re trying to have an excuse to fire him. Something tells me things are really going to heat up.

Thanks so much, Kathy.

Claudia, Glad there one of your professional situations has gained a bit of positivity. Hope it goes the full way. Again with lovely flower photos! Keep them coming as we head towards autumn. My garden has been neglected and I really need to get out there for fall clean up. I happen to love chickens, so the rooster egg cups are just gorgeous; they’re the same, but different.
My boy goes in for a check up with his surgeon this morning. Fingers crossed….
Claudia says
Fingers are definitely crossed for your sweet boy!

There is so much to love in your post today! I’m glad that a bit of light is getting in in the career department. But your opening photo is sooo pretty! I think I may have some of those here, in the forest, but I assure you that they aren’t nearly that glorious You are so good with that camera, girl!
Egg cups are adorable, too. What a sweet gift from Kim! Thanks for the link to the Times story. That url will be my next stop.
There was also a good one yesterday about the scientific effects of a traumatic event, such as an assault, and why you will remember the attack quite vividly (from 36 years ago!), while forgetting the minute details like where the house was, what color were the walls in the room, who invited you to the party, etc. (While a drunk guy who really doesn’t see what he’s doing to someone else as important or out of the ordinary, may not recall the incident. I think it speaks to an underlying nastiness at his core.)
Claudia says
Yes. I have been hearing much the same thing from victims writing about their assaults on Twitter. They forget the date, the place, etc.
Shanna says
Yes, but it’s what they can’t forget that’s important!
Claudia says
Exactly.

Claudia, those egg cups are precious! I love that your reader Kim sent them. I look forward to the miniaturist show photos. I’m home and exhausted. Travelling is getting harder as I get older. The long flights are hard on my body. It was so good to see my girl and enjoy a week with her but it was good to get home to my own bed also! Resting today and loving on Annie as she is glad I’m home but a bit mad I left for so long. Good to hear positive news on the work front! I will read the Times article for sure. Happy Friday!

I’m dreading jet lag. I remember how badly it felt 17 years ago when I flew to London. Oy!

Happy to hear your work situation took a turn for the better. I hope a full amends to you will be made. Your mail box flowers are lovely. Your mail person must enjoy stopping at your house.
By the way, McCoy pottery is yet another area of enlightenment for me thanks to reading your blog. I had been unaware that a small green-and-brown rectangular planter I’d picked up years ago in an antique shop was “a real McCoy.” I bought it because it was a “Scottie Dog-thing.” Now it is twice as special.
Claudia says
Wonderful! Glad you have a McCoy treasure there!

I am so happy your work situation is working itself out. And your new egg cups are lovely.
Claudia says
Thank you, Tana!
