Friday Potpourri

August 25, 2023 at 9:08 am by Claudia

Late summer garden.

♦ It rained yesterday and it’s raining as I write this. So, it’s been rather gray the past couple of days. But tomorrow should be somewhat sunny. I don’t mind the rain so much since we’ve had a respite from endless rain lately. Maybe we can make it through the weekend without having to mow! Wouldn’t that be nice?

♦ I’m very into War and Peace  lately, so I am way ahead of the normal chapter a day. If I keep this up, I’ll finish way before the end of the year. Normally, I read it first thing in the morning when my brain is calm and the most receptive. This morning, I slept in a little, so I didn’t have time. However, right after I write this post, I’m pulling it out. I’m so grateful for the Readalong. I absolutely know I wouldn’t have attempted to read it otherwise.

♦ Did anything happen in the news yesterday??? Any interesting photographs?

♦ I lazed around all day yesterday. At one point, I mentioned to Don that I had a list of things to do written in my planner and I hadn’t done any of them. Late in the afternoon, I went on overdrive and crossed them all off my list. Very satisfying! I also sorted through lots of magazines that were gathering dust and put them in the recycling bin. More today. I’m also donating two big bags full of fat quarters to our town’s Craft, Fabric & Yarn sale which is run by my friend Susan. We used to work together at Heidi’s shop. I’ve been carrying those bags around in the trunk of my car for a while now. At one point I had arranged to donate them to a local quilting group and had been communicating back and forth with someone about a place to meet to facilitate the transfer. Then, I never heard from her again. I have no idea why. Anyway, I was in the library the other day and there was a sign about the sale, so I messaged Susan on IG, and today I’ll drop everything off at the library.

Hurrah!

♦ I keep reading more and more about the new strain of Covid. My friend Noble has it now and he’s older than I am. His wife, Tina, said he got it the one time he didn’t wear a mask – on the train. Several of you have mentioned friends and family who came down with it after successfully keeping it at bay for 3 years. Don and I had stopped wearing masks when going to the store, but I’m planning on wearing one again. I’ve seen an uptick in local people wearing masks and I’m going to join them.

Hey, a mask covers my sagging neck, so why not? I look younger!

Stay safe.

Happy Friday.

I paid a little bit of attention to the events of yesterday. I am very hopeful that there will be accountability for all. The mug shot was very disturbing. In terms of Covid, about two weeks ago I saw a dear friends that I hadn’t seen together since before Covid, and we all exchanged big hugs. I felt perfectly safe, but a week and a half later I saw them posting that they had been very sick and it was confirmed that they had Covid. That felt like a shock to me, and another friend of a friend who had stayed healthy for three years ended up in the hospital. So I might be going back to masks as well. It seems like the smart thing to do. You and Don stay safe and have a great weekend!

I hope you weren’t exposed, Nora. I think this particular variant is a tough one. I’ve been reading about a lot of people who avoided it for 3 years and now have it.

Good idea to start wearing your mask again. Flu season is coming up as well as the worry of Covid. We’ve never stopped wearing our masks. It’s a small inconvenience but well worth the effort. I just hope Covid doesn’t come roaring back. Stay safe. Hugs, Elaine

I like to wear masks. Don’t have to put on any makeup! Might start wearing them again. I guess at some point I will just keep wearing them. At my age it wouldn’t hurt! I am going to start reading War and Peace in January. Need to get to a second hand book store. Haven’t been in a book store since 2019. I am looking forward to it! Going through boxes at the moment.

Your yesterday sounds like a wonderful day — and a productive one, too. I know several who have Covid now. I just have pneumonia so I’m laying low (I feel surprisingly good; if my doc hadn’t told me I wouldn’t know). But not wanting to either spread it or pick up something else when immunities are low.

    Have a great weekend!

Oh I loved the ‘mug shot’ from yesterday. It’s been so hot here in GA and Mom and I are staying in and cool. Also with the new Covid strain on the rise I just don’t want to go out. After the heart issues I have from getting covid Dec 2022 I don’t want it again. You and Don stay safe.

beautiful colors! beautiful flowers! beautiful photo!

glad you can enjoy the rain this time around. and hopefully not have to mow the lawn for at least a little bit.

good for you on the productivity around home and reading ahead in “war and peace”!

i have read several books in the last few weeks. :) cuts down on getting other things (knitting, cleaning, etc.) done, but i will accept that with happiness and relief because it’s good for me to be reading again!

radioactive parathyroid scans done this morning. radiologist to read them yet today and send a report to my osteoporosis/referring doctor on monday. soonest i should know anything more is tuesday. i will let you know what is to happen next (i understand the two main options are surgery to remove tumor(s) or take a lot of supplements with occasional testing) once i know it

thanks to everyone who has prayed for my family and me. much, much appreciated!

picked up a copy of my prescription to get new eyeglasses. thankfully the prescription didn’t change much (when tested a few months ago) and i’ve been wanting new frames for a while. will be good to have done.

soon going to get groceries for members of my family. i’ve been wearing masks all this time (including at the hospital this morning) and, especially given the recent news about covid, i expect to in the future. even though i am sure tired of it (i know we all are)!

best i get to the store. might rain a bit here and i want to get home and shower, then enjoy some much-needed rain. :)

    happy friday. stay safe!

Kathy, so glad the testing is done, and I am praying for good results. I hope you get the much needed rain. We are so hot here in Georgia and we need rain also, but not much predicted in the forecast. Update us when you know testing results. Until then, I will pray for your health and safety.

Photographs from yesterday? Hmmmm, the only thing I saw was a surly looking man on the tv!

I am so sick right now with pneumonia but so tempted to test to see if I finally got Covid after 3 years of totally avoiding it! I’ve had pneumonia before and this is way different than past experiences. We’ve seen more people wearing masks in the last week, and I pulled out ours to wash and put in the car for when we go in to town. Ugh, wish the C would just stay away!

Enjoy your weekend. Hope the sun comes out soon. We have rain and fog and smoke today but the weekend is supposed to be amazing.

There was a doctor on the Morning Show on CBS today, and she was stressing that everyone over the age of 70, should get a flu, Covid, and RSV vaccine this Fall. The RSV is a new one to me, but I guess our age group is more susceptible…ugh. Hoping we all can stay healthy.

You couldn’t miss that picture on the internet last night…it was everywhere. I like the pic of your flowers so much better. It doesn’t look so rehearsed.

Our daughter went to Poland, Prague, Budapest, etc in July for about 2 weeks with 2 friends. She got home on a Saturday night and by Monday she was sick flat in bed with Covid. She had been “spared” the last 3 yrs like hubs and me. She was down with it for over 2 weeks. She still has the cough. She had started the meds right away and felt better after a few days and then got sick all over again. The Dr called it Bounce Back Covid. She had a horrible sore throat. They even tested her from Strep Throat but it was neg and Covid was still positive. Neither of her friends got it, but they both had it over the past few years. It is really spreading here in Wis. We have been wearing masks, too. With flu and RSV season upon us soon, I guess we will just continue. Be sure to ask your Dr about the RSV vaccine. That is one of the elements I had last winter and it was absolutely horrid.

I did watch the news last night and MSNBC. He is so proud of his picture and it is making him lots of $$$ as part of his new fund raiser. Bleh!!!!!!!!!!

We have had temps over 100* the last few days. So hot, and everything is drying up. Watering is getting really old. But it is better than shoveling. Hope you have had a good evening! Take care.

I have days when I don’t accomplish anything either. If Dean is traveling, I will get a late night second wind and can get things done between 10 and midnight. I did that when I was younger and kind of feel good I can still do it – occasionally. Usually it’s lights out by 10 for us.

I think I mentioned how my wonderful husband brought Covid back from Asia. Well, our youngest just spent a week with all his work colleagues. Everyone works remotely and they’re from all over the world so they meet once a year in person in Chicago. Was feeling unwell when he got home a week ago and next day was notified someone had tested positive. Yep, just over a year from when he last had it, Nick tested positive again. Says this version a lot milder than last year’s. I’ve begun wearing a mask when there’s going to be a crowd indoors. Ours was mild too but not taking any chances.

    Take care,
    Kay

This was mid-June and at first he said he had a bad cold. Day after he got home he did a test and was positive. 2 days later so was I. We had pretty light cases but our son seems to be a bit sicker. Thanks for the good wishes.
