Frigid Friday

January 21, 2022 at 9:46 am by Claudia

Yesterday’s sunset:

Don’s snowman is still standing, though we found the carrot that had been the mouth right outside our kitchen door. Hmmm…Did a bird try to take it?

Puzzle status:

There’s still quite a bit to put in place, though I managed to cover a lot of ground yesterday. Patience, my friends, it takes patience. If I get impatient for some reason, I get up and leave it for a while.

Don just made pancakes and scrambled eggs. That’s not our usual breakfast, but it’s very, very cold out there and when that occurs, Don often feels the need for a ‘big breakfast.’ This cold snap will be with us for the next 5 or 6 days.

Right now, the sun is reflected in the girls’ eyes and they look like zombies.

But yesterday, Sophie spent some time with me while I was working in the den. She was happily ensconced on my planner.

Marilyn, you’re right. I will  have to use double pointed needles if I want to knit sweaters. Gulp. I ordered some on Amazon. I’m going to have a learning curve, that’s for sure. A note for all of you who think I’m a great seamstress: I’m not. Yes, I can stitch a (fairly) straight seam to put basic quilt blocks together. I can knit, crochet, and embroider. I CANNOT make clothes. That’s another thing entirely. I was dreadful at it in Home Ec class. My grandmother was a seamstress. She could do anything. And my mom made clothes for us. But making clothing and sewing a straight seam are not the same thing. There’s a lot more to it than that. And, let’s add to this discussion the fact that I have no desire to make clothing. None. But I so appreciate your cheering me on. I’ll leave the Blythe clothing to others who are unbelievably talented at what they do. I kneel at their feet.

Stay safe.

Happy Friday.

Claudia, there is an alternative to double points called magic loop using a long cable needle. I have never mastered it and not sure how it would work with such small things.
Don’t let double points intimidate you. They are a little trickier to hold but you are just knitting with two needles at a time. The others are just holding stitches.
I’m sure you can do it. There should be quite a few you tube how-to videos to help. I went down the Ravelry rabbit hole yesterday looking at Blythe doll patterns. There are lots of them. You may have a whole new hobby!

My puzzle is going very slowly, although a whole section just fell into place yesterday. I love when that happens.

    Have a good day
    Take care

I just finished my puzzle. I think the needles will arrive tomorrow. But I have to check to see if I have any yarn left!

      Stay safe, Marilyn.

I just came across this in the NYT. Have you seen it? I have never seen such a doll house before.

cheering you on about knitting with double-point needles and seconding the magic-loop alternative and tips that marilyn mentioned. you can do it!

hope you all stay warm and safe.

even though i have two weeks of laundry to do (couldn’t before due to last friday’s fourteen inches of snow, also my work schedule), i am glad and grateful for the weekend!

dear Claudia and Don — I certainly know how having NO garment making skills feels. tried many times to do things for our children — awful attempts, hated every minute of the process — my GMa and my sister made nearly all my clothes (except underwear&socks!) when I was growing up but I never got that gene, ha!! somewhere along the years (after marriage) my sister-in-law began making things for our girls — beautiful stuff and continued to do so for our grands — I have bought patterns/fabric many times for her to use BUT not for me — can’t imagine how anyone sews those gorgeous, teeny, tiny clothes for your girls — that is REAL talent, IMO. hope you all stay safe/healthy

It helps to accept what we can and can’t do, right? We both know we can’t make garments. I’m happy to let others do that.

      Stay safe, Linda!

It sounds like a good day to snuggle in and enjoy that breakfast and stay cozy. A puzzle, the girls, a good book, a good guy. What more do you need?!

Double points make me crazy. Can you find those ones for knitting in the round that are connected point to point with a cord?

I’ll look for them – I’m not sure what they’re called?

      Thanks, Jeanie.

Thank you, Jeanie! Those are circular needles, which I have – but they’re too big, I think, for these small pieces, which is why Marilyn suggested double pointed needles.

I finally found your Instagram! Can you tell I am not very computer savvy. My IPad seems to do weird things. Pancakes and eggs sounds so good! I hope Don is resting with you. Enjoy your weekend.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
