Garden Cleanup, Egg Cups & A Gift

April 17, 2019 at 8:10 am by Claudia

Now that the endless wind has died down, I’m going to work outside today and tomorrow. Rain is coming on Friday and throughout the weekend, so I have to grab some time while I can.

Meanwhile, in the yet uncovered big garden bed:

The hyacinths are blooming.

I’m tackling that bed today. Wish me luck.

Egg cups for today: Four double egg cups in the Harlequin pattern by Homer Laughlin. (Apparently, I forgot to remove the price tag on one of them!)

I received a lovely package in the mail from Kate, a reader of this blog. Kate asked me if she could send me two egg cups that she had in her home. Of course, I said yes. When the package arrived there were additional surprises!

First of all, two lovely lustreware egg cups.

Then two beautiful knives – my grandparents had a set of flatware like this.

And 4 cups/saucers made by Arabia in Finland. Are they demitasse? They’re on the small side. And this photo isn’t capturing the color, which leans a bit more toward green/yellow. They’re lovely – such simple and beautiful design. (I’ll try to capture the color in a future photo.)

Thank you so much, Kate! I’ve already made room in the kitchen china cabinet for the cups and saucers! The egg cups are in the cubby cabinet. And the knives have joined my stash of bakelite.

I’m blessed.

The winner of a copy of The Eighth Sister  is Marilyn! Marilyn, I’ve already sent you an email. Just send me your mailing address and I’ll forward it on to the publisher.

Happy Wednesday.

pretty presents from kate … love the colors.

congrats to marilyn for winning the book. i am going to look for it at a bookstore soon.

        to donnamae …

oh, you’re welcome! :) re-reading my comment (“hope everyone else can do the same”) now reads funny and kind of bossy … like i’m telling people to go wash their coats, etc. … but what i was intending was to share the hope that everyone has milder weather to enjoy and won’t have to wear coats for many months. ha. i’ll re-read before clicking to post a comment next time.

anyway, feels good to get stuff like that put away, doesn’t it? :)

hope we get a rainy day here soon (love them) and that you have a good day, laundry and rain or otherwise.

What a sweet gift from Kate. I’m drawn to the simplicity of those egg cups…such pretty colors.

I figure by Friday we should be able to get out and really start on some much needed yard work. The rain should be done by then. We have 30 bags of mulch to spread…I cannot wait. Really…I’m just itching to get out there and clear out the gardens. All I is the time….and some good weather. Hard to get that sometimes. Enjoy your day gardening! ;)

I don’t have my mulch or top soil yet – just cleaning up the beds is taking up all my time now! Next week.

It does feel good to get out there, Donnamae!

What beautiful gifts!! You have some wonderfully generous followers, and it is so good to know that kindness and thoughtfulness are still out in this world.

You are way ahead of me in your garden clean up. Raining and really kind of cold out here today. The weekend looks good right now. Hopefully they are right! Have a good Wednesday!

I love the Homer Laughlin egg cups and have a couple myself. What a sweet gift from a reader. Love those knives! Yesterday was Scouts birthday. She is now 4. We had fun at a Mexican restaurant and they put a big sombreo on her and sang to her. FUN! I got her a girl dress and purse she loved. Sun is out my cough is getting s-l-o-w-l-y better. Thankful for small blessings.

What a nice package of goodies to get in the mail. Hope all went well with your flowerbed cleaning today. We are so frustrated because first we got 2-3 inches of snow on the weekend and it’s been raining ever since. I don’t think we’ll ever be able to get out there and eject the leaves and junk. Meanwhile, the tulips are coming up and the deer are eating them just as fast as they get a few inches above ground, as they do every year. Sigh…

That’s very frustrating! We have a lot of rain ahead in the next week, but I did get a first swipe at all the garden beds yesterday. Thank goodness! Hang in there, Kay.

What a lovely gift! Such beautiful colors; love that lemon yellow.

Equally gorgeous colors in your Homer Laughlins.

Sometimes I feel so sorry for my husband that he’s partially colorblind (since birth); there’s just too much rich and exquisite color in the world that he can’t see.

I don’t blame you. I guess since he’s always been that way, he doesn’t know the difference?

We talk about it a lot. He sometimes comes up with an outfit that I tell him he just HAS to change because of color clash he can’t see; when he was a kid, his mom had to match up his socks for him. He’s always asking me what color a car is when we’re on the road. And when he says something is brown but I tell him it’s bright red, he always seems deflated. It’s hard for him to see the green of the foothills after all the rain but he can see the yellow mustard growing. Blue is good for him. He’s very attuned, more than a normal-eyesight person, to light change (how else can he pass a driver’s test!), depth of tone (I don’t know how to describe it but, like, people who are colorblind are useful with the military, or so I’ve read, because they can spot stuff in a camouflaged setting that another person couldn’t; also, in his case, he’s been a professional photographer in his past and the specialty was black & white portraiture because he just, not to make a pun, had the eye for it; had his own darkroom and equipment, developed his own pictures; so, where you have a loss, then the gain; before him, I had no appreciation for black & white films or photographs). It’s a curious disability. The color purple with him is a lost cause. He had to take back a shirt that was such a vivid purple that it even hurt MY eyes. Same for orange. Like a sweatshirt he bought that looked like it should be worn by a road worker who needs to stand out for traffic control. But it’s not a totally gray world for him like it is with others who are 100% colorblind. It’s usually a workable situation for my husband.

Garden clean up has always been my best therapy. Our country’s leadership has upped my need for therapy! It takes a bit more motivation since getting up and down isn’t as easy as it use to be! I’ve been catching up on Gardner’s World 2019 which again provides inspiration and motivation. It’s going to be a sunny day in Oregon and I need to turn off the news since I know I won’t like what I see and hear and get out in the garden. It’s 6 am and it is still dark outside so Monty will fill the time before I go out.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
