Happy 90th to my Dad

September 28, 2013 at 7:59 am by Claudia

dadme

Dad is 90 years old today.

His name is Gordon, by the way. He went off to serve in WWII at the age of 18 and came back home when he was 22. He earned a Purple Heart. He corresponded with a girl from his neighborhood while he was overseas. She was given his name by a neighborhood group that was supporting the soldiers and started writing him letters. A few days after he got home, they met for a soft drink at the neighborhood soda fountain. He told her he was going to marry her and she thought he was awfully cheeky. Six months later, they were married.

They eventually moved to a suburb of Detroit where they raised 4 children. Dad worked for Michigan Bell Telephone Company for 40 years. He loved to go fishing, to take us camping, to spend time at the cottage on a lake that his dad built when dad was a toddler.

He’s a complicated man. He has his demons. But he loves his family with a devotion that is unmatched. He visits my mom, now in a nursing home for over two years, every day. He loves his adorable cats and they love him. He still drives, though he doesn’t drive in bad weather or at night. He still fixes things around the house. (My dad can fix most anything, by the way.) He loves nothing more than to sit in his chair and look out the window at all the birds and waterfowl that hang out near the pond. It gives him peace.

He’s lonely. It’s tough without my mom. He has lots of aches and pains and some days are really tough. But he hangs in there.

My dad is a good guy. He’s incredibly generous and has been there whenever we have needed him, with advice, with acceptance, with money, with a hug. He makes sure to visit other residents of the nursing home that he has met during the past two years. Some of them are all alone, so he stops to talk to them. He is a kind man.

So Happy Birthday Dad! Happy 90th Birthday to you! I’m far away from you physically, but you are in my heart.

Today we celebrate you.

(I’d love it if you left a birthday message for my dad. I thought I would print them out and send them to him. Thanks so much.)

Love,

ClaudiaSignature140X93

Happy birthday to your dad, Claudia! What a great post and an interesting life your father has had. So young to go off to war (as so many are, of course). I love how faithful he is to your mom. We could learn a lot from that generation. I feel like so much has been lost in the way of self sufficiency, reliability, independence, the ability to figure things out and do them, and perseverance through tough times. Cheers to your dad!

Happy Birthday Gordon! What a wonderful picture of you and Claudia! Your look reminds me of my handsome father. Your life reminds me of him too, enjoying the pleasures of life but living up to the responsibilities of it also, and with a modest air about the whole thing. The story of meeting your wife is a very nice one, but then, there were so many nice couples that met before and after that war, my parents included. May you enjoy many moments in each day of your 90th year onward despite the pains one has to deal with. There are rewards still there for each day.

    You have a lovely daughter!

Serving in the War, raising a wonderful family, working at the same company for 40+ years and sustaining a marriage for over 60 … well, any ONE of those things alone is a lot to be proud of. And you have done them all. You deserve to be very proud. I am honored to “know” you even a little bit – and hope you have a wonderful birthday with your family and cats today. God bless you.

My step-father (who is the only father I really knew) also served in WWII as a medic and went to Japan, France, and Germany. He also got a Purple Heart when he was shot in the neck. I can’t imagine what it would have been like for a young guy,18 years old, to serve in a war. I understand why you have your demons because so many who served have them. You’ve lived a long life so I’m sure you have many stories to tell and I can tell you are a sweet man with a kind heart. It takes a real trooper to live to be 90 years old! How sweet to visit not only your wife but the other residents in the nursing home. Life has it’s ups and downs, joys and sorrows and you are a trooper! Dear Sir
Happy birthday from distant Buenos Aires, Argentina !! I was very touched by the sweet photo of young Claudia and her handsome dad, maybe remembering the relationship I had with my own dad whom I lost twelve years ago.I appreciate your daughter Claudia very much from the distance and I”m quite sure the really good person she is ,is the legacy of your qualities as a good human being! Have anice day!!!

Happy birthday, Gordon. That’s my father’s name also. He also joined the Navy for WWII and retired from the Navy. I’m sure Claudia loves you with a passion as she always says sweet things about you. Hope you have a very happy day.

Happy Birthday, Gordon. How lovely to see the picture of you and Claudia! Claudia has told us wonderful things about the father she loves so much. Take care of yourself and many happy returns of the day. (Always have a soft spot for the name Gordon, my youngest grandson was a Thomas the Train fan and Gordon was the favorite after Thomas). God bless and keep you.

Best wishes on the occasion of your 90th birthday, Gordon! Thank you for serving our country. My father, too, served in World War II, in Europe, with the 99th Infantry Division. He will be 90 years old next July. You sound like a fine man, a loving husband and father to your wonderful children. I so enjoy your daughter’s blog. Lots of people, all over the world, are thinking about you and your dear wife. Blessings from Pennsylvania!

Happy 90th Birthday Gordon! You must be a really great Dad because you have a great daughter in Claudia. Her description of you reminds me of my Dad who passed away too early from Parkinson’s disease. I hope you continue to enjoy the birds out your window for many years!

Happy Birthday Gordon! What a milestone you have reached at 90. In many ways you sound like the same kind of dad I had – loving, serving, kind, thoughtful and caring. Those same traits have been passed to Claudia. You must be proud of her as she is of you!
    Many good wishes to you.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
