We’re having another period of all-day-long-high-winds.
We’ve had so many of them lately.
It is rather beautiful, though. Sunny, windy, sometimes dark, then sunny again. We have a front bringing in much colder weather with a significant snowfall on Saturday. Next week, the temps will pretty much stay in the twenties. I guess our relatively mild stretch of weather is ending.
I got home around 6 pm yesterday after a concentrated stretch of coaching. After checking in with the director, I walked back to the apartment building, loaded up my car and headed home. It was rush hour, so traffic was slow at times and the whole time I drove directly west, the slowly setting sun was blinding me (and every other driver on the road). That, coupled with some insane drivers, made for a tense drive home. I was very glad to arrive home safely. Don had dinner ready and I was so tired I could hardly construct a complete sentence, but today is better.
I have no plans for today except to take it easy (and vacuum, something Don doesn’t think of doing) and enjoy being back in this little haven. I’m reading one of the Maigret novels by Georges Simenon. It’s a series I’ve always known of, but have never read. I picked this one up several months ago at Oblong Books. It’s only about 160 pages, so it will be a relatively quick read. Then I’ll tackle the newest Michael Connelly, which I had on hold with my local library system. There were so many people in the queue ahead of me, I thought getting it in my hands would take much longer, but it came in while I was gone and Don went to the library for me and picked it up. I’ve read every Michael Connelly ever written. I’m a huge fan.
As to the title of this post, I said these words to my husband last night. The water in Hartford is not kind to my hair. I forget this fact until I have to go back there. It renders it limp and useless. I can’t wait to take a shower here this morning and get it back in shape!
No offense, Hartford.
Happy Thursday.

Glad you are back home again. Safe and sound.
Speaking of weather – today’s is odd here – I looked out the back and the sun is peeking out from the clouds; opened the front door to find rain, a light misty rain. Now it’s pouring!
Yes, it seems winter is arriving, as if we hadn’t had any of it’s Nor-Cal-type weather earlier.
I love seeing the greens of your sofa and the other elements of the room with sunshine streaming in. Just calming and pretty as a home should be.

Thank you, Martha!

I’m so glad you’re back home safe and sound!
and the picture of the cottage living room is beautiful.
it crosses my mind that it’s the perfect imprint of the loving couple who lives there!
have a wonderful day Claudia. and enjoy a glorious weekend… whatever the weather! xoxo
Claudia says
Ah, thank you, Tammy!

“no offense, hartford” … kind, true and made me laugh out loud (thanks).
glad work went well and you came home to a nice welcome and dinner from/with don … and got a favored author’s book earlier than expected and delivered to boot (i am glad that you and don found each other!). too bad about the traffic , bad drivers and sun glare, but at least it was sunny and you are now home. :)
i say vacuuming can wait. :)
what lovely sunshine coming in your lovely home! if you ever wonder what to take photos of and write about here, may i suggest more of the art in your home? please, thanks and no pressure … just a wish (from someone who loves to see what extra-creative people choose to have in their homes) that you don’t need to do anything about.
we are to get around six inches of snow followed by hours of freezing drizzle, high winds and even more snow starting around 6:00 am tomorrow. i am not looking forward to joining the crowds at a grocery store tonight nor do i wish upon anyone or any thing the hassles that come with all that snow and ice, but that kind of weather might give me a day at home and i need one. i guarantee that i won’t spend any of it vacuuming! :)
happy thursday.

meant to add that the idea about you showing art in your home was prompted by my wondering about the painting in the photo with today’s post. looks charming.
and for what you already share (so much), thanks!
i really need to read my comments before sending them out (to make sure they’re complete).

It’s a Normal Rockwell print and this particular print is quite old. We found it in an antique shop 16 or 17 years ago. I’ll take a photo of it, Kathy.
kathy in iowa says
thanks for that, too, claudia.
and oh, how i love norman nockwell! what talent and statements in his art! and it all brings back such happy memories of my childhood and grandparents (i was so blessed with them and that both sets lived a block away from each other)! :)

This is a particularly charming one that has resonance for us as performing artists. I’ll take a picture soon.
Claudia says
Well, I did vacuum. But that’s about it! Good idea about the art we have hanging around here. I’ll do that.
Hope you get to stay home tomorrow, Kathy!
kathy in iowa says
thanks, claudia.
good for you for doing what you wanted with the vacuuming … and glad if that means you’ve got the energy. i love being home and doing most chores, but vacuuming … i do it, but it’s about my least favorite task.
no pressure about the art tour, but thank you!
and yeah, i’d like to stay home tomorrow, but not if it means we’re all getting clobbered with so much snow and especially ice. will see what happens tomorrow morning.
thanks.

Claudia says
I agree. How about just enough snow to keep you in, but no ice?
(I love vacuuming! Always have.)
kathy in iowa says
while i do not understand your love of vacuuming, i applaud it. vacuuming is just one of those things that needs to be done on a regular basis.
my favorite task at home is washing the dishes (by hand).
will take that … enough snow to stay home and no ice!
hope you have a good night!

I wash the dishes by hand every night. It is NOT my favorite thing to do! xo

i’d switch chores with you if i could!

Glad you made it safe back home. The wind is awful here, too. We are going to get 1-3 inches of snow. Later in the day rain will hopefully was most of the snow away. I hate the wind. It always makes me nervous because there are a lot trees here.
Marilyn
Claudia says
2-6 for us, Marilyn. But it appears to be a fast-moving storm. We’ll see.
Like you, I worry about wind and our trees – we’re surrounded by them!
Wendy T says
I absolutely love Maigret! I’ve seen three versions on TV, starring Michael Gannon )my favorite), Bruno Cremelli (in French) and Rowan Atkinson (the most stylish). Love love the books. So intelligently written. I’ve read every one in the library at least twice.
Claudia says
Do you mean Michael Gambon? He’s one of my favorite actors. I saw him onstage in London many years ago and I still remember that performance. I’m really enjoying the book, Wendy, and I’m definitely going to get more.
Nora in CT says
What with the driving, the short stay, the compacted work schedule, and the having to move apartments due to rust issues (the apartment’s, not yours), you had a whirlwind trip. I’m glad there were no storms. Coming home always feels so good, especially when the husband has made a hot meal to welcome you. I’ve just finished an amazing Irish literature classic called Bring Back my Brother (Or Bring my Brother Back…my mind is going). It was written quite a while back and is full of gorgeous poetic descriptions of life on an island and the changes the family goes thru as they have to move to the city. Set during the Troubles in the 1920s, it’s really amazing. At any rate, the writer always calls the mother “the mother”. It really struck me as particularly Irish for some reason. They work the women to death but idolize them at the same time. It was a hard life for everyone. On another note, yesterday was pretty gorgeous here, as your photo shows. I was at the big windows of our bookstore and it was mesmerizing watching the clouds fly past, sometimes with brilliant sunny patches and then a sudden gray layer. They just flew. I was grateful for that view for around our house we have lots of trees and would have missed the panorama. Stay warm this weekend and I hope we don’t have a huge amount of snow.
Claudia says
The book sounds wonderful, Nora!
We’re awaiting our oil delivery, which will probably not be until late in the day. It’s cold!
Linda @ A La Carte says
Rough drive into the setting sun! Glad you made it home safely. I love Michael Connelly. I haven’t been reading much but it’s time to lose myself in a book. Last book I read touched me deeply. It was ‘Where the Crawdads Sing’ loved it.
Claudia says
I’m just about to finish the Inspector Maigret mystery and then I’ll start the Michael Connelly. I hope things are a bit better for you, Linda.
Linda @ A La Carte says
They are and aren’t! Mom is refusing to move at the moment and I’m going to back away from the issue a little bit. She thinks she does not need assisted living. So the only way to show her is for me to stop doing everything for her. I won’t put her in danger but I will say no much more often and let her (I hope) realize how much help she really needs. Meanwhile I’ve had a root canal and crown prep on two teeth in the last 10 days. I need a break, a book and my bed! Hugs!
Claudia says
Sounds like a good way to help her see the light, Linda. Oh poor you! Root canals and crown prep: been there, done that. It is not fun. Get in bed and baby yourself this weekend, my friend.
jeanie says
Some water can do a number on your hair. I feel for you. And that drive would drive me crazy — hate going into the sun. But it sounds like a productive time. Welcome home. Sounds like you’re ready for a break!
Claudia says
I am! Thank you, Jeanie.
