Hibernating

January 15, 2019 at 11:01 am by Claudia

Just because I like looking at this cabinet. I pass it countless times a day because it’s at the bottom of the stairs, with the bathroom just to the right. Can’t miss it. It never fails to make me smile.

Now I just need that Sleepy egg cup. Still looking. Still slightly obsessing over it. Regular egg cups are pretty and I like them, but figural egg cups are whimsical and happy-making. They are still my first love, they’re just harder to find nowadays. I think I got into collecting figural egg cups in the nick of time. I managed to scoop them up before they disappeared. I still see them occasionally, but not nearly as much as I did in 2002 – 2005.

It’s friggin’ cold here! The kind of cold that makes you want to hibernate inside the house all day. I didn’t get around to my closet yesterday, as I was washing sheets, cleaning the house and the bathroom, watering all the plants, and doing some research. I think I’ll start on it today.

The weather forecast is saying there’s potential for a big winter storm on Saturday and Sunday, with lots of snow and ice. Let’s hope that ‘potential’ fizzles out. I wouldn’t mind a bit of snow, but snow and ice? No and no and no. Other than that freak snowfall in October, we’ve been pretty lucky so far. Can we just keep it that way, Mother Nature?

We watched part of Bruce Springsteen on Broadway  last night.  We’re going to finish it tonight. I cannot say enough about this show. It’s just Bruce, telling us about his life and career in his poetic words and images, both spoken and sung (accompanied by acoustic guitar.) It’s amazing. I’m not a big Springsteen fan, by the way – I mean, I like and respect him, I just never listened to a lot of his music. But you don’t have to be a fan to enjoy this filmed version of his recently closed Broadway show. I have friends who saw it live and raved about it and now I know why. It’s on Netflix and I recommend it highly. It’s honest and touching and funny and powerful.

I’m reading the newest James Lee Burke – The New Iberia Blues. It was published last week. Excellent, as always. There’s none better.

That’s it, my friends. Winter brings too much time indoors, a sense of hibernation, no flowers in the garden, no critters running around outside. It gets a bit harder for me every year, though I try very hard to find beauty in the stark landscape.

Happy Tuesday.

I’d be smiling every time I saw that cabinet too….it’s quite the eye-catcher. It’s been cold here too…nothing frigid, just damp. The kind of dampness accompanied by winds that go right through you. We have green grass here…no real snow since the first of the year…and that’s fine with me. Spring can come any day now.

I’m spending the afternoon at my Ladies Monthly Luncheon. Nothing better then spending time…4 hours or so…eating and laughing with old friends! ;)

It’s wet wet wet here, Claudia. Rain all week with a major storm Wed and argues expected to pour buckets as well as a huge snow dump in the Sierras. Don’t mind the snow dump as that translates to snow melt to fill our reservoirs in Spring and hopefully good skiing for folks who do.

Youngest kid currently flying to Rome for a 3-week class then 5 days on her own (with a friend) to Venice and Florence. Those 5 days will be her first time abroad without chaperone or guide. My worry hat just got 1000 times bigger even though I’m excited for her.

I so like your egg cups, such a special collection but the cabinet you display them in is what I keep on going back to. How lucky you were to find it and then buy It!
It is cold (but not freezing yet) here in northern California, makes you not want to go outside so have been doing alot of reading which is an advantage of winter.
Your blog is my favorite, so “real” and relatable even though I live in Calif. like your descriptions of yours and Don’s daily life and your pictures are so real.

Your egg cup cupboard is almost full and you will have to start a new collection. I see a cheerful egg in one of the cups and maybe eggs will be your next collection. I have an egg collection with decorated eggs from all over the world … China, Poland, Australia, Germany, Russia, Israel, and other places with the most being Ukrainian Easter eggs. I live in a part of Canada that has a high Ukrainian ancestry and the craft of making these exquisite eggs has never died out.

Oh, no! I’ll keep on collecting egg cups. I can rotate some of them out of the cabinet if I want to and I have other places to display them.

Love your eggcup collection. So pretty! I am in upstate NY and I have been hoping for snow since right before Christmas. I think it’s absolutely gorgeous especially here in the Adirondacks. I love the drastic change of seasons up here. I try to find the positive in each season but Autumn is definitely my favorite.

Oh Claudia, even what you consider your most ordinary days are still fun to read about. Hope you get around to your closet today. There’s such a sense of accomplishment from cleaning a closet, especially the first time you open the door afterward & instead of seeing hangers jammed together, boxes & shoes & whatnot all over the floor etc – you see order & colors & space! It’s a great feeling [as I’m sure you know]. Peace. ⭐️

As Donnamae said, we have no snow, although our grass is more brown than green. And it is that bone-chilling cold that goes right through you and into your soul. On the news last night they said it has been 334 days since we had a temp in the single digits last Feb!! Seriously crazy/ scary weather. I am a huge fan of the lack of snow although I know the ground needs the moisture, but we have had a lot of rain – just not in the form of snow.

Hope you got to your closet today. If not, there is always tomorrow! Have a great remainder of your Tuesday!

We’ve had so, so much rain that I’m not worried about the water table. But nevertheless, snow is on the way!

Two cents on my weather it is COLD!! But that is not the worst, The Salt Lake Valley is a basin surrounded by mountains, therefore all carbon monoxide, smoke, ash everything man can produce stays locked in the valley in the winter, our air is as bad as it can get. kids have to stay inside even at school. some of us are using particulate barrier masks.and it is dark all day,it never quite get daylight because we are smothering in this inversion. We must Quit building homes and roads in this area we are already 2 million people over what we have water for ( this is a desert after all) and
it is all about greed. No one seems to want to change what they are doing. Something has to give ….Soon. On a lighter note I think I could stay inside, and watch an amazing doll house taking shape. (;^) Thanks for letting me ,blow my top! as my Mom always said.

Cold here as well. But we don’t have to deal with the problems you have in winter with the Salt Lake Valley, Judy. My goodness! You are welcome to blow your top anytime!

hope you don’t get that much snow at one time or any ice! and stay warm!

we had a bit over five inches of snow last friday night and saturday. it was a beautiful snowfall … lots of flakes and it snowed for about twelve hours (!) so those flakes were super-tiny. also wet, so we have lots of icy ruts on sidewalks, in parking lots and on most side streets. i hate ruts! more snow is on the way this coming weekend.

hope you find “sleepy” soon and have a nice night!

I so enjoy reading your posts. I have purchased some old pots for the many bulbs I have separated to give to my daughter as they were planted by her great grandmother and her grandmother. After seeing some of the vases and planters that you have ,I can now have these bulbs planted in them to sit in the sunshine. We did inherit some that are similar to yours. I just ignored them till I found your site.
Now they can be used again.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
