Hijinks

June 18, 2016 at 9:51 am by Claudia

Late afternoon animal hijinks at the cottage.

Baby bunny was munching on the grass in the memorial garden.

I have to shoot these pictures through our windows, so they are not the best quality. But oh, is this one a cutie.

I looked up and saw Henry slowly walking towards the shed and disappearing into the entrance to his home. And then about 5 minutes later, I saw a groundhog near the garden. I don’t think it was Henry because this one didn’t look quite as big, but I can’t be sure – Henry sightings have been few and far between this summer.

6-18 henry?

6-18 henry?2

Hmmm….what is he thinking, I wonder?

And he’s going in.

Which prompted an opening of the front door on my part in an attempt to dissuade him from chomping on my garden. What he loves, I think, is the crown vetch that you can see everywhere in these photos. Crown vetch can be invasive and I regularly yank it when it threatens other plants in the garden.

But it also spills over the edges of the garden. So I don’t mind him eating it as long as he doesn’t decimate it – it comes back very quickly.

Nevertheless, I’m keeping my eye on him! I could see evidence that he’d been there before.

The crown vetch is in bloom at the moment and it’s quite beautiful. Remember yesterday’s post where I said I hadn’t seen very many bumblebees? Well, I did yesterday; apparently, they love these blooms.

Don is really enjoying Instagram and is taking a lot of photos, so I gave him my old Canon to play around with. Early evening found us both outside taking pictures. He has a great eye.

Essential reading from yesterday’s New York Times. Absolutely essential.

Enjoy your weekend, my friends.

Happy Saturday.

Great bunny and groundhog shots! Those naughty groundhogs will eat all your vegetation! Last year, a groundhog that lived underneath our front porch ate all my lettuce/greens that I was growing in pots. One time, it was actually quite comical…I saw him out the front door sitting smack-dab in the middle of the big pot of greens, happily munching away like this pot o’ greens was made just for him. I went to grab my camera but he saw me and took off.

They take off very quickly if they see or sense you. Shy…but not shy at all about eating our gardens!

What fun photos! It must be enormously entertaining watching the live creature show. Thank you for the link. I saw bits of Ken Burns’ speech on the news the other day and it made me wish that intelligent, rational, thoughtful people like Mr. Burns would consider running for office.

I read the text of his speech first and then watched the whole thing. I wish he’d run for President – or at least the Senate!

Henry (or his cousin) must be so fun to watch. He looks like quite the character. The crown vetch is beautiful. I don’t think we have that in our area.

I bet you do – somewhere! Our climates are similar. Or maybe not? What do I know? I got this from my friend’s garden. 5 or 6 cuttings turned into a riot of Crown Vetch. But it fills in the area under the maple tree, which can be a difficult place for a plant to thrive.

You’re right! I just looked it up, and we do have it in Colorado, though at slightly higher elevations than where I am. I’ll keep an eye out for it;)

Fun photos of wildlife in your garden. Frightening article. My entire paternal family is Canadian. 1) My second cousin’s daughter visited me recently and said Canadians can’t believe what is happening to US politics and asked me if what is going on with the presumptive GOP nominee is actually going on, or if the newspapers she’s reading are providing comic relief. She was appalled when I told her, yes, many articles you have read reflect the current Presidential race. 2) She offered me refuge in Canada if the Presidential race goes completely off the rails…

We have black bears in the vicinity. In fact there’s one who frequents the area across the road from us, though I’ve never seen him here!

Seems that most all members of the rodent family are very cute…I love watching our bunnies here too..The groundhogs are also fun to see though they don’t come out as much as the bunnies..Your Henry is probably looking around wondering what has Claudia planted for my lunch today..lol..I guess that why they are called groundhogs…Please share some of Don’s photo’s with us sometime..I think the Times article says so well what many of us are thinking and feeling…I will be reading more of Mr Egan’s posts…

I loved that article. Groundhogs are shy, that’s for sure – they run as soon as they hear a noise. Whereas, the bunnies freeze, but stay in place until they think you’re getting too near to them.

Thanks for linking the New York Times piece, Claudia. IMO, Timothy Egan has nailed the whole situation beautifully here. I also have a lot of respect for Rick Wilson, a very smart Republican strategist that he quotes here. Rick is a frequent contributor to MSNBC, which I watch much of the day, and he’s been making sense about Trump for MONTHS now.

One of the my “things” is watching Commencement addresses on YouTube each year – that alone is worth the cost of my monthly Internet bill – and I found Ken Burns’ Stanford address the day after he gave it this past week. It’s incredible, I can’t recommend it enough. And here’s a link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bEIFuEcjn_s

PS – I wish I could figure out how to insert a “live” link into comments.

Oh, if there’s anyone else out there who likes Commencement speeches, I highly recommend Steve Jobs, at Stanford again, in 2006, Meryl Streep at Barnard in 2010 and Conan O’Brien at Dartmouth in 2011. All are very memorable and completely worth the time to watch them. Plus Conan’s will crack you up, and we SO need that these days…

I saw Ken Burns’ address the other day, Janet. In fact, I think I saw it the same day he gave it. It’s a powerful piece of writing!

I like Rick Wilson, too. He makes sense. We’ve been watching MSNBC a bit more now that the primaries are over.

Thank you for the link to the New York Times article. It should be required reading, however, I am not sure that all of Trump’s supporters have the critical thinking skills necessary to process this information. We can only hope that some of them wake up in time, and that Hillary is elected in November.

Hijinks, for sure! Wild life never ceases to entertain, that is for sure!!
Sadly, the Orange Man doesn’t understand that running for the office of President should NOT be filled with his “hijinks” and attempts at entertainment. One must assume he believes this is just a big Reality show in which he is the star……
The article is wonderful!! I still am amazed at Paul Ryan calling him a Racist, but saying he would support him…… seriously. There is much which amazes me lately. Way too much.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
