Had a little glitch with the blog this morning and, I guess, last night, though I didn’t see it. When I tried to get on this morning, my browser said my ‘certificate had expired.’ Very frustrating. But my host fixed it, so if you saw a warning that my site wasn’t safe, it is, and it was. Certificates renew every few months and this one was lagging a bit, according to the tech. He pushed it through. Just a technical glitch. All is safe here at Mockingbird Hill Cottage.
But since I’m not feeling well this morning, it was energy I didn’t need to expend.
Yes, I’ve got some sort of congestion, cough crap thing. Not feeling at all well. Sigh.
Despite that, I arrived home yesterday to a sunny day and almost all the snow melted. That put a smile on my face. Even though I don’t read reviews, I would have bet a hundred dollars the NY Times wouldn’t like the show and they didn’t. It doesn’t fit into their ‘model’ and, let’s face it, the reviewers there can be snobby. It’s not like anything else on Broadway, therefore, they don’t know what to do with it.
I’ll say it again. If you like Jimmy Buffett, you will love this show. If you want something traditional, you probably won’t.
I’m just praying that the show has a healthy run despite the Times. Send some positive energy our way!
Enough about those people. That is exactly why I don’t read reviews (and I didn’t read this one) because it’s one person’s opinion and if that person doesn’t get it, then it’s slanted, and people can be influenced by that. I like to make up my own mind. Frankly, I’ve long thought that reviews should be outlawed. One person’s opinion is not necessary my opinion. Or yours. Nor should that reviewer have any influence whatsoever. If I had a dollar for every time I’ve loved something on television or film or theater that a reviewer didn’t, I’d be a rich woman by now!
There are other reviewers out there who did get it and that’s a good thing!
Change of subject: I can hear lots of birdsong this morning! Heavenly. I know that we’ll have very cold temps at nighttime for the next week, but temps during the day are warming up. March doesn’t want to give up winter just yet and there will be the inevitable ‘snow showers,’ but they won’t last…because spring is just around the corner!
This is what a about-to-open new leaf looks like on a rubber plant. Isn’t that splash of red beautiful?
I have to buy some groceries today and then I’m going to lay low for the rest of the day. Don has one show this afternoon and then he has the evening and tomorrow off. I’m planning on heading back into the city for the March for Our Lives this Saturday. Then I will most likely stay for a couple of days, or Don will come home with me. We’ll see.
Happy Sunday.

Isn’t it wonderful to see the sun shining through the windows. I always say pfftt!! to reviewers. Like you said. It is one person’s opinion. How many times have reviewers gotten it completely wrong. Hope you feel better. Get some rest. xo Laura
Claudia says
Thank you, Laura!
Deb Leadbetter says
I agree, pfftt! Seeing your cottage always makes me smile. So homey!
Claudia says
Thank you, Deb!

The only reviews I ever read are those for products or restaurants. And then I read both the positive and negative ones. I think reviews for shows, movies, plays are just too subjective…and therefore, not reliable. All reviews should be taken with a grain of salt. Enough said.
Love your rubber plant…I’d love to get one…but no room, unless something else leaves. Hope you feel better…enjoy the sunshine while you can! ;)
Claudia says
Enough said!
Thanks, Donnamae!

I do read some reviews but when I read a book or movie review I don’t always agree. I hate the snobiness of the Times. They are ‘above’ what the people want. This show will bring fun and joy, seriously needed
Claudia says
They are incredibly snobby. I stopped subscribing today. No more Times.
Wendy’s T says
Many many times, I’m screaming at the newspaper because the reviewer gets so many details wrong or doesn’t pay attention and totally misses a character ‘s motivation or misinterprets dialogue. I know reviews are subjective and it’s only one person ‘s opinion but if one is being paid to review, at least do it right. Rest rest rest, Claudia and beat that virus (it’s probably a cold) back!
Claudia says
Thank you, Wendy!
Chy says
Hope you feel well soon Claudia. Happy to hear you have sunshine today and the snow is almost melted. Here? It’s snowing …. again!!
I read the review ~ don’t even bother going there. I hate reviews as well. They always seem like their angry to be there, like they hate their jobs and it comes out in their words. Ignore!
Wishing you a peaceful and restful day.
X Chy
Claudia says
Thanks. It’s clear that they didn’t ‘get it.’ Besides being angry they’re more than a little pretentious. Have a lovely day, Chy.
Chy says
Kind of happy the snow is keeping us home, cozy and warm. I’m going to head to the art studio and work on my dollhouse. Finally a day just for me to create!

So happy that your snow melted! and the sun is out!
and…
as to the reviews.
Meh! I knew they wouldn’t like it. and yes. they are snobby. but they’re the worst about their precious idea of the theatre and the stupid cuisine in restaurants they are also ruthless about.
who wants everything to be “The Iceman Cometh” for Pete’s sake!
we NEED ‘Escape to Margaritaville!’ now more than ever.
I knew as soon as the critic (what an interesting word) said that he found it to be like Cats in its
blah blah blah … he didn’t like Cats either??? really? well somebody did.
because it only just ran forever.
I could hardly read that for thinking YOU NIT WIT!
THE WHOLE WORLD LOVED CATS and it ran for ages. so hmmm…. the same thing with this one. it’s a HIT everywhere it’s been. whether your swelled head wants to accept that or not! must the theatre be always so cerebral? of course not! it’s entertainment.
we NEED a respite from the pathetic drama of the white house for one thing.
like you. I think why in the world can’t they let the people who see it make up their own minds?
are we illiterate? NO! do we need them to tell us what to see and what not to see? NO!
and all across this nation in the various cities the response to Escape to M. was wonderful!!!
well. obviously. I could talk that crap all day. especially how much I can’t stand the ‘critics!’
I could gladly poke a pin in him and watch him fly around the room in the expelling of such empty headed hot air! LOLOL! and the tooting sounds he made would just be a BONUS. hahahaha. xo
Claudia says
It’s so New York. Completely predictable and infuriating at the same time. Go ahead – poke a pin in him! Thanks, Tammy!
shanna says
How can they sit in that audience of happy parrotheads and not have a blast? Someone’s cranky pants are showing! Audiences know best and they love it. Feel better soon.
Claudia says
Exactly! Every audience has been on their feet at the end, laughing and singing. Mr. Pretentious needs to get a life. Thank, Shanna!
Nancy Blue Moon says
I never let anyone tell me what I should or should not like…if I did that what would be the point in me having a brain of my own…lol..??…I have been angry many times when I liked a TV show and it is taken off the air…In my opinion Don’s show is about having fun…pure, simple, fun, fun, fun!…and that is always a good thing!!…When I tried to get on your blog last night I got that message too…that your ‘certificate had expired.’..glad that you got it fixed so quickly…I love your big rubber plant…wish I had room for one here…I wish for you and Don some peaceful rest after the exciting week you had!
Claudia says
Yes. I’m forced to rest because I’m under the weather and Don is resting up, too. Thanks, Nancy!
Marilyn says
Sorry you are not feeling well. The weather has improved. The next storm we are suppose to get this week, its chances arriving here are now diminishing. Keep your fingers crossed that it does not come. Have a nice Sunday and get some rest. Feel better soon.
Marilyn
Claudia says
I think the chances are really diminishing, which makes me very happy! Thank you, Marilyn!
Vicki says
It’s good how you are ‘going with the flow’ about Don’s schedule and adapting your routine. When he comes back to the cottage now, it must seem strange for him. Like a dream. He’s not going and coming the way you are. I wish he could get like a week off but I know that won’t happen. You’ve helped me understand the nature of theater workdays.
Sure hope you begin to feel better soon. You’ve been out and about with a lot of humans who may have been spreading germs, the weather has been so cold for you to be out in it and perhaps your resistance got a bit low (vulnerable). I’d cuddle up today, enjoy being home; drink something hot; clear soup is always good/healing (I’m making one today; something simple and veggie; I’m not much of a cook). You are wise to take it easy. Listen to your body.
I so agree with your opinion of critiques and reviews. Years later, I’ve watched a film which was panned at the time, only to find I personally really liked it! Then, vice versa, I’ll feel utter disappointment in a movie which ‘everybody’ raved over. Or like with new seasons of TV shows, a reviewer can kill a series before it even has a chance to air Episode #1. (This of course can happen with books, art gallery showings, new restaurants; too many things. Give it a chance for Pete’s sake! Don’t be so darn ‘superior’!!)
Every time I read most anything these days, if it’s not jive-ing right with me, I’ll look to the author at the top of the article and think, “Well, you know, who is this person? Do I know anything about them? Isn’t it just their take on it?” EVERYbody has an opinion these days. And they don’t seem to have any hesitancy in voicing it – – and they have A LOT of places TO voice it.
It’s about 1:30pm here in SoCalif and trying to cloud up again. We’ve had some recent gentle rains with spaces in between so it can soak in and run off properly which has been a blessing for burn areas (since our wildfire damage is still so recent from December). It’s interesting to see the burned foothills go green, with black/charred trees rising out of that green (not to overuse the word, but ‘surreal’, especially with dramatic shadow play from all the storm clouds above; sometimes feels other-worldly). Some trees will never recover; still, the green feels hopeful and, for surviving wildlife, it gives them something to nibble on. The green is easier on our human eyes, for sure.
But, ohmygosh, the weeds on our own back hillside are out of control! Weeds love rain! And, in terms of drought, the creek and river are still dry although we could get rain-hammered next week, so say the forecasters. When we got so little in Dec/Jan/Feb, I figured rain was likely done…but, nope; March surprised us. Very glad for you that you have melting snow; before you know it, Claudia, you’ll be doing your spring gardening!
Claudia says
Glad you’re getting some rain, Vicki!
The more I think about it, in this age of social media and so many news sources, the newspaper ‘critic’ is becoming a dinosaur. I, for one, am very happy about that. They don’t have nearly the power they used to.
Chris K in Wisconsin says
It was nearly 60* here today with sunshine. It was glorious. Supposed to be a high of 37* on Tuesday ~ the first day of Spring. Not so glorious. I love the premise and the promise of spring. I just don’t like the “rollout”. But the previews are fun!!
Take care, kiddo. Rest is truly the answer. Hope you can get a bunch of it, with plenty of fluids!!
Claudia says
Lucky you! It’s only in the forties here for the next several days. But if it doesn’t snow (fingers crossed) I’ll be happy. Thanks, Chris.
Linda @ A La Carte says
Hope you are feeling better Claudia. I had a busy Sunday with church and then time with Sara and the Grands = Happy Grammie!!
Claudia says
Good for you! Thanks, Linda.
Jenny says
I read a lot of positive reviews about Escape to Margaritaville. It sounds like so much fun. I’m bummed I missed it when it was in Chicago, but would still LOVE to see it sometime.
Claudia says
I hope you can, Jenny. It’s such fun!
LESLIE SCHROEDER says
I’m a friend of Kathy Boyer’s from Glenview, IL and found you after following your sister. Talk about connections! We saw “Escape to Margaritaville”in Chicago and loved it. My question is, were there any changes made before opening on Broadway? While we are lucky to have so many pre-Broadway productions come to Chicago, but I always wonder how they differ once they hit New York. Hope you feel better soon!
Claudia says
Yes, there were changes. Some dialogue additions and subtractions, a new song/scene added, as well as another scene. And the closing number is different. All for the better, I think! Thanks, Leslie!
Marcy Ray says
May the critics of this world disappear, …into the their little caves they have created. ( I have never known a rat I liked. I don’t read their nonsense or seek their comments before attending a play, a restaurant, or anything at all. What an outdated occupation!)
Congratulations to your talented husband and you for rising above this nameless critic. Feel better soon.
Claudia says
It’s absolutely outdated! I think their ‘importance’ is fading away, especially in these days of social media and so many news sources. Thanks, Marcy!
kathy in iowa says
agree about skipping reviews … i decide things for myself, thank you … i saw “escape to margaritaville” in chicago and loved it!
hope you feel better by now, have been able to rest and recharge. same for don.
hope, too, that you have a great week ahead.

In every town it’s played, there has been nothing but happy audiences, dancing, singing and having a ball. Including NYC. Thanks, Kathy!

Congratulations on the show’s success, I only hear the good stuff. Everyone in Alabama celebrates Jimmy!

Yay for Alabama, Eve!
