Hot, Hot, Hot, and a Roombox

July 16, 2025 at 8:46 am by Claudia

The humidity and heat continue and we have a heat advisory today and tomorrow. I mowed yesterday morning – did too much, of course – but I was so aware that there will be no break in this weather in the foreseeable future and the grass was long. Today will be a recovery day. I’ll be watering the plants outside, but mostly staying inside in the a/c.

We mistakenly got a package for our next-door neighbors and Don tried to deliver it next door but there was no answer when he knocked. He left it in the mailbox. He called the next day to make sure they had received it. Only then did we learn that their son, who is probably about 24 now, was in an terrible accident on his motorcycle and is in the hospital in Albany and has been there for a month. Don came back from that initial visit saying the grass was overgrown and the house looked deserted and I had noticed it had been quiet over there – they usually get at least one delivery a day. But this is the kind of neighborhood – semi-rural – where you don’t hang out on the sidewalk and catch up with each other (we have no sidewalk.) If you happen to be outside when a neighbor is coming or going, you might have the chance to talk, but usually not. Anyway, we were shocked. He’s such a nice kid. The father is elderly and staying at home and the mom is staying up in Albany with the son who is in ICU. We still don’t know details as to the extent of the injuries, but when we spoke to the father yesterday, he said, “It looks like he may pull through.”

That sentence stopped us in our tracks.

I can’t imagine what they’re going through. We’re praying for Emile and for his family.

In a bizarre change of topic, I did a story on my Blythe IG. This is how I set it up:

“Whatever can be under that cover? Everyone seems fascinated by it.”

“Wren says it’s a CHAIR!”

“Our first piece of furniture for the house! I wonder who will be the first to sit in it? Lucy? Lily? Wren? Dexter?”

“Well look who snuck in – Ruby! Well done!”

Silly, but I had fun doing it. I can’t get over the difference between 1/6 scale (which this is) and 1/12 scale, which is what is used in all of the dollhouses.

I’d like to get a sofa – or another chair – so I can set up more shots. That would be especially useful in winter, when I can’t get outdoor pics.

This is a Lori Loft dollhouse that I got at Target about 11 or 12 years ago. It’s made of thick cardboard. It had a loft and stairs, but I never fully got into doing something with it. Plus, I got the modern dollhouse, which gave me more possibilities, so this stayed in a corner of the bedroom and I used it for storage. Eventually, when I got into Blythes, I removed the loft and the stairs, thinking it might function as a room box for the girls. I think it will. And I’ll know more about what I want to do with it when I get a sofa and a rug.

Hey, I have to keep busy and creative or I’ll go mad.

Stay safe.

Happy Wednesday.

what an awful situation for emile and his parents to be in. :( may it be short … may he have a full recovery and may it arrive quickly. it would (obviously) be nice for all of them if in the meantime emile could be transferred to a hospital closer to home so both his parents could spend more time with him. prayers said and will continue for emile and his parents (and everyone else).

glad you let some more of your creativity out for play. also, i love the new chair, especially the fabric (that pattern in some of my most favorite colors … that deep red, french-y blue and off-white). all nicely done, claudia!

best wishes dealing with the weather (same for nyc and everyone else). we’ve been in another hot spell, too, so am hoping the forecast holds true that our high temperature will soon be around 74 degrees for at least a few days. i’m going to say it… i am ready for fall’s cooler temperatures!

trying to make more time to get creative here, too. those beads i mentioned last week arrived on monday. necklace finished yesterday and i am pleased with it. i’ve been wanting something to put a little color near my face, as i don’t often wear makeup, have pale skin and my hair is turning ever more gray.

now, though, is time for getting other stuff done. they are more of the hard “have to” things, but i remind myself it will feel better to have them done.

hope you, don and everyone else have a great day. stay safe in every way.

    kathy

Thanks for your kind words about our neighbor. I doubt if he can be transferred right now. He’s in ICU and if he’s up in Albany when there are hosptials that are closer to us, it must mean that hospital is the best place to take care of his injuries.

Our flowers are so pretty right now, but it’s impossible to be outside and enjoy them.

      Stay safe, Kathy.

What a mind-numbing ordeal your neighbors must be going through. I hope their son does pull through and eventually fully heals. I’m so very glad that my daughter’s boyfriend sold his motorcycle before they met. I know she would have refused to ride on it and we would constantly worry when he was doing so.

Ruby looks triumphant! But your girls share so I look forward to the next doll in it. I like the upholstery on the chair. I’m looking at fabrics that are predominantly red to recover my rocker-glider.

I know his mom always worried about him using that motorcycle.

      Thanks Wendy.

Very sad news about your neighbour’s son. Hope he pulls through. Your new, very cute chair is the perfect chair for your girls. Love the colours. It’s very hot here, too. Stay cool. Hugs, Elaine

What frightening news about the neighbor’s son! Puts my kvetching about the weather in perspective for me, but of course the weather is terrible everywhere at the moment it seems.

Keep the creative juices flowing! It’s much better for the mind/physic than listening or watching the news that we’re bombarded with every day.

Looking forward to seeing more pictures of your girls!

“He MAY pull through” is frightening to hear. All good thought are with your neighbor and his son.

The room box will be a great venue and that chair is really pretty! The girls look delighted!

Claudia …..take care of yourself……hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. Found out that the exhaustion I am feeling is because I am dehydrated. Taking showers and running through the sprinklers doesn’t count. I am now adding some salt and drinking much more water than I had been. This is global warming folks.

On a lighter note…..Love the chair. Want a life size one…same upholstery please.

I am sending prayers today for your neighbor’s son as I am sure others on this blog will be doing.

We really try to drink a lot of water daily – I get dehydrated easily.

I’d also love a version of that chair!

      Stay safe.

Imagine if that package had not been delivered to your home by mistake, you never would have known. Maybe there are little ways you and Don can help out – a simple meal or treat for the elderly man left to worry at home. It seems as if you were meant to find out and maybe they need you. I’m glad you are checking in with him.

Sending positive thoughts for your neighbors son.
Went to bed at 10 hoping to break my late nights,, now it’s 1 already.
Finally did some sketching yesterday after a long dry spell.
    Rained like Crazy today.
Really liked your pic of the bee on the coneflower. My grandpa was a very skilled bee keeper.
    Night…

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
