How Do I Love Thee, New Dawn Rose?

June 2, 2012 at 9:18 am by Claudia

Oh New Dawn climbing rose, I love thee.

Was there ever a flower with such a delicate touch of pink?

It rained very hard here last night and I’m afraid to go out and see the current condition of those beautiful flowers. I can see from the window that the peonies are drooping down to the ground. Hey, rain: I like you and I know we need you, but for the love of all that’s pretty, don’t rain so hard that you ruin my flowers. A gentle rain will do nicely, thank you.

I mowed the back forty and the front lawn yesterday with our push mower. I’m wiped out and my allergies are screaming. (I’m allergic to grass.) But the lawn looks good. Because we live in the country, we don’t have a pristine lawn. It’s a mix of grass, some weeds and some moss. It doesn’t bother me because I’m not one to do all the sorts of stuff you have to do to have a picture-perfect lawn. I also don’t use chemicals on my garden or my lawn. I’d rather it be natural. However, because it is such a mix of green things, it can look ragged pretty fast. Don always looks at me like I’m crazy when I announce it’s time to mow again. But don’t you love that freshly mown look? I do.

It’s my work out. And, since I hate exercising, this seems to be my ‘natural’ form of keeping fit.

Let’s have another look at New Dawn:

Exquisite.

New Dawn, you’re giving my peonies a run for their money. Someday I hope to have you climbing all over the porch rail and up a trellis. I can sit on the glider and drink in your scent. We will take pictures of each other sitting on the glider, reading a good book, surrounded by New Dawn roses. Sigh.

Happy Saturday.

New Dawn is beautiful and sure to bring you smiles of pleasure for a long time.

Newly mown grass is one of my favourite smells, too. Our grass is the same as yours, a mix of grass, moss and foreign plants. And it needs mowing today – I may help. We’re trying to minimize the grass by adding more flower/vegetable garden beds.

    Enjoy your weekend!

New Dawn is a wonderful rose! Pale pink, vigorous, fragrant, and so disease resistant. It’s almost always my first choice to recommend to someone in search of a large pink climber. Yours will be wonderful on your deck!

There is a universal law that says there will be heavy rain when the peonies bloom, to knock them down. Sigh. Love your climbing rose! ~ Maureen

Hi Claudia- I don’t know if you know it but I looked all over to find a New Dawn Rose. There were none to be found around here so I ordered 2 online. I am soooo anxious for them to flourish. I doubt that I will get any blooms this year but I am excited for next year- xo Diana

Oh Claudia – I too love New Dawn Roses – unfortunately we have way too much shade at this house to grow her and we are reluctant to cut down trees.

The mix of “weeds, grass & moss” make for a PERFECT lawn, according to landscape designer Tara Dillard (taradillard.blogspot.com) She calls the mixture “Tara Turf”.

According to her the Classic Design Recipe is “Path, gate, arbor, light, picket fence, color theme, bench, potted boxwood, leaf litter mulch, Tara Turf, focal point on axis. (Note: treat this as any good recipe. It works everytime & is unique everytime.)

According to this professional landscape designer – you pretty much have it “perfect” . . . and indeed your yard and cottage appear that way to your readers.

    Blessings – enjoy Miss Dawn!

My mother always said a heavy rain would fall once the peonies were blooming. It sure happened here!
I’m with you on New Dawn roses. I have one on my arbour and there seem to be plenty of buds. I think it is pretty much indestructible and yet the blooms look so delicate.

Oh Claudia. I don’t even live in the country and my lawn (what lawn I have)is a mix of who-knows-what. I just keep mowing and watering it.

I’m really coveting that rose. It’s such a perfect, beautiful, soft shade of pink. I think it will be going on my wishlist!

    Hugs,
    Jill

Claudia – I love your New Dawn rose. They are so beautiful. I used to have one in a previous house. I didn’t realize I missed it til I saw yours. I’ll have to get one when I get my garden back under control.

I’m allergic to grass too but unlike you, I HATE mowing the lawn. My face gets all red and puffy and my eyes stream. I’ve actually had neighbours come over to see if I was ok – but like the commercial, I say “It’s just allergies”…J

The New Dawn is my favourite Rose but try as I might I cannot grow one here in this part of Ontario. I just adore them and I had dreams of having them tumbling over trellis’s all over my farm but alas it was not to be. You are so lucky.

New Dawn is a pretty one! I will have to take some photos of my New Dawn. We had all day rain yesterday but it was an all day soft rain. We really needed it! I do like a freshly mowed lawn. Looks so much neater to me…like a fresh haircut!~Hugs, Patti

Claudia, I love that beautiful rose. I see you have a hydranga beside your rose, how lucky. Mowing is the best exercise . Smiles, Susie

Claudia, your roses have gorgeous blooms! I saw 2 New Dawn at our local nursery and I should have snatched them up. They’re probably gone by now. I’v heard they really thrive well and they aren’t too finicky like some roses. Sadly, one of my Zehpherine Droughin rose bushes died and the other one looks pitifiul. My late mom gave them to me.

I’m allergic to grass too, and bees, but I will NEVER stop gardening!

    Have a lovely weekend.

    Hello Claudia,
I have missed visiting you, and am glad to stop by. Your New Dawn rose is beautiful! I used to have one of these roses too in my old house and I loved it’s pale pink coloring.
There is nothing like a freshly mowed lawn! They look so good, even if they are not Perfect lawns. I have a mixed lawn too…and it’s o.k. : )
I am wishing you a beautiful summer!
    Hugs,
    Terri

Your porch looks very inviting! I had a New Dawn climber at my old house. I hadn’t thought about it in years until I saw your post. Enjoy your roses!

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
