I’m still adjusting to the time change, so I’m glad I went to the matinee yesterday, rather than the evening performance – I was really pooped by then.
The outside of the theater at the La Jolla Playhouse is all decked out in honor of Margaritaville.
Lots of audience members wearing Hawaiian shirts and the occasional lei.
Of course, margaritas were available.
Don showed me a photo from last night: three men (including a doctor and a lawyer) who have seen the show a few times, wore eye patches in honor of Don’s character. Hilarious!
I really loved the show – it’s such fun, pure escapism (and boy, don’t we need that right now?) I got to meet the cast before the show, a nicer group of people you could never hope to meet. They’re wonderful. Great performances by all, especially Paul, who plays the leading man, Tully. He plays the guitar, sings beautifully, and is a star.
Don, who would be embarrassed if he knew I was writing this, sort of steals the show. His character is quirky and funny and touching and darn it if he doesn’t sing a lot more than he let on! That sneak! I loved watching him and his fellow cast members who do everything; sing, dance, and act. Triple threats, every one of them.
I had the best time!
Rick and Doug were there as well, and we all went out for dinner between shows. Lovely. And bizarre – I just saw them last week in the Hudson Valley!
I’m proud of my husband, who is one of the best actors I know. He can do anything. But this character is perfect for him at this time of his life and he is having the time of his life. For that I am truly grateful.
Yay, Escape to Margaritaville!
Today, we’ll be out and about. I’m not sure where yet – but I’m going to suggest we visit our favorite antique shops in Ocean Beach. I want to say hello to my friend Lori, who owns Vignettes.
And why do I think we’ll end up at the local beach so someone I know can body surf?
Happy Thursday.
So wonderful to feel the love in your words. You’re creating splendid memories together.
We are having a lot of fun, Wendy. It’s so nice to see what he’s been working on and meet everyone I’ve heard so much about!
Sounds like you are having lots of fun!
I am!
Sounds .like a wonderful escape! I finally watched a video on you tube about Jimmy Buffet and the musical…..so glad I finally did! Have fun you two! ;)
Thank you, Donnamae! We are!
Oh, what wonderful fun!! As someone else said, we can hear it in your words. The two of you together are the best. Knowing that, we know how hard the past many weeks have been on both of you. Is this the last weekend of performances in La Jolla?
Hope you have a wonderful day, and I’m sure you will!
Yes, Sunday night it closes and we take off on our trip home on Monday morning.
omg! I just looked on Youtube to see what body surfing is! Is Don really going to do that?
He’s already done it – many times!
Such fun!
It is!
Body surfer, huh? That Guy!
Oh, how I wish I had seen it with you! I know it was a great show and a happy release for you and the whole audience. So glad you’re having fun!
I am. So is Don. He’ll miss this show when it closes on Sunday. He really loves doing it and he loves the cast, too.
What a delightful post and the last photo is priceless, so much love and emotion captured. Thanks for sharing such a heartfelt experience and the creation of memories. My early life was in Southern California and I remember the lovely area well. Wish I could be there to see what is without question a fabulous performance! I enjoy your daily blogs even though I seldom leave a comment. Wishing you and what you portray as your “soul mate” a wonderful experience in LaJolla and continued life. Mary
Blog name is http://www.mylastact.blogspot.com. I’ll have to try to fix it. Mary.

Than you so much for your kind words, Mary!
On how wonderful it sounds!…you needed this Claudia!
I did. We both did!
Hurray-you guys are together again and I hope you enjoy every moment in Lala Land!! Looking forward to more adventures on your blog!
Well, we’re not really in la la land – that’s Los Angeles/Hollywood. We’re happily in San Diego County.
Thanks so much, Sue!
sounds like a wonderful time. Keep it up!
Judy
We will. Thank you, Judy!
I just caught up on your last few posts. I Love the picture of you two wearing your Margaritaville and Anastasia T’s – it’s a keeper. And I love seeing the pics of La Jolla. It’s a lovely place that I’ve visited several times. Enjoy your time there and safe travels home –
Thank you, Karen!
I just knew this show would be great fun! I wish I could see it and Don. I think he is so talented. I love that some of the repeat audience wore and eye patch. FANS!! I hope you are having a good day. I spent most of the day with my Mom and we had a good time. Out to lunch, a Dr visit and shopping at (of course) WalMart! Catching up with blogs that I didn’t have time to read this morning. I haven’t body surfed since I was in my 20’s! Hugs!
We were out and about in Ocean Beach on Tuesday and a whole family recognized him from the show. Then yesterday, another person (working at a coffee shop) recognized him and asked me to take a picture of them together. That Don has fans!
Great photos. I love the picture of you and Don….looking good. Blessings, xoxo, Susie
Thank you, Susie!
You two are so cute; you don’t look your age! (Younger!!!)
Let’s hope it stays that way, Vicki!
So glad you and Don are having a great time. You two look so happy and contented.
Marilyn
We’re very happy to be together again!
Enjoy every minute of your last few days in San Diego! Sounds like a fun show.
Thank you, Judy. I will!
Happy reunion to a beautiful couple!! I grew up north of San Diego (Vista) and have been longing to go back so I may have a bit of an idea how great it feels for you both. Of course, i did not have the added wonder of meeting the love of my life there, so it’s even more extra zowie special for you two. Big breaths of that unique SoCal air and big hugs bring you both major happiness!!
Thank you, Nora!
so glad you two are together and (of course) having lots of fun!
hope to see “escape to margaritaville” sometime and that don recreates his current role in it!
know you will enjoy the rest of your time in san diego and that road trip together. have safe travels. the offer of dinner is still available should you go through iowa. :)
kathy in iowa
Fingers crossed! It would be great if Don continued on with the production, but truly, it’s all a crapshoot. You never know.
Thanks, Kathy!
Love the photo of the two of you and so glad you are having a wonderful time!
Thank you, Kim!
Oh, how I am enjoying your time with your wonderful husband!! Sounds just like what you need, and maybe what all of us need right now. Time to wander in the beautiful summer. I have a question about Don wearing an eyepatch for his character. Is it made so he can actually see through it? I am always curious about silly details. But with the dancing I was thinking he would need both eyes.
I don’t think he can see through it, Tana. I remember it took some time for him to adjust to it. I’ll ask him, though, and if there’s more to add about the patch, I’ll come back and edit this comment. Thanks!
Edited to add: He can see through it – it’s sort of like a mesh fabric that you can see through but looks solid to the audience.
What an awesome photo of the two of you!
