What can I say? Endless rain. Lots of thunderstorms. Yours truly on the verge of a primal scream. More rain today.
I did manage to do some weeding in the garden yesterday morning, because, as you can imagine with all this rain, weeds have quickly become out of control. And I did my best to prune the big bush that sits in the big garden bed. And then, because I knew rain was on the way and the grass was already too long, I mowed the large part of the front lawn. I knew I was doing too much, but it had to be done. Don was in the city yesterday. He’s mowing the rest of the lawn(s) tomorrow, when, if it can be believed, it will be sunny.
Our thunderstorms have been big ones, going on for a long time, with rain pummeling the gardens and plants. I’ll share a picture of the bridal veil spirea taken the day before the storms started.
Now, it’s drooping on the ground and the flowers are brown. To be fair, it was about time for the flowers to fade, but what an undignified end to their beauty!
Ah well.
Let’s see, what’s on the agenda for today? I’m getting my hair cut. It’s way too long, yet again. When your hair is long and straight, it’s easy to let it go and then one day you realize it won’t do anything and it looks limp. That’s where I am. I cannot wait to have 3 inches taken off!
I may go to the Country Living Fair tomorrow. Still debating. I couldn’t go last year because my sister was in town (NYC) to see Don in Margaritaville. I usually go on Friday and I go early because it gets crowded very quickly. I’m there for two hours max. There’s a lot of variety, but I tend to concentrate on vintage and antiques.
Is everyone still experiencing excessive rain and, in some cases, flooding? Gosh, I hope June brings better weather. We’ve broken all kinds of records here.
Happy Thursday.

I wish you could send us just a bit of your rain. The sky is an unworldly yellow at the moment from all the smoke coming from the forest fires in the north. Today I am thankful for air conditioning at work.
Hope you are able to attend the Country Living Fair tomorrow – would love to see some pictures!
Claudia says
I’m so sorry to hear of the fires, Barbara. And I wish I could send you our rain. xo
kathy in iowa says
you did a lot! hope today’s easier for you and that your weather turns more to what you like and need.
we don’t need any more rain here for a while.
going to the “country living” fair is on my list of things i’d like to do someday. hope you can make it there tomorrow and find not only what you want, but also a great parking spot! will don go with you?
happy thursday to all.

I’m not sure if I’m going at this point in the day, but it’s not really Don’s thing. He went with me a few years back. Most of the people there are women.
Margaret says
No rain at all here in far too long, although our rainfall total for the year so far is fine. Summer tends to be dry with rain in the Fall; last year there were insane amounts of it in September, 36 inches – climate change, anyone? When there’s no rain, life with the night herons that nest in our trees becomes exceedingly unpleasant. By yesterday it had gotten so bad, despite our frequent hosing, that our contractor had a little chat with the city manager who sent a fire truck to hose down our street and sidewalks. As a bonus, the fire fighters rescued a fallen chick – they can’t be returned to the nest – they took back to the station to hand over to Animal Control who took it to the bird rescue people. Our tax dollars at work.
Claudia says
We’ve had insane amounts all spring. It’s raining now. It’s going to storm on Saturday and Sunday.
Why is it hard to deal with the night herons when there’s no rain?
Margaret says
They’re huge, there are a great many of them, they bring shellfish back from the beach to feed their young, they all crap all over the place. It’s disgusting, it stinks, it attracts flies. They’re here for four months, but the second half of that is almost unendurable. We can’t use our front porch or patio for months on end, no one can park anywhere near the trees where they roost. We hose our driveway and sidewalk and cars daily, but the house next door is empty most of the spring and summer (it’s a second house for the owners), and we’re not going to do their property and the street itself. They’re highly protected and horrible. They took up residence on our block a couple of years after Hurricane Ike killed 40,000 trees on the island and they had to find new homes. Plus many of the young fall out of the nests – a couple of years ago there were about two dozen casualties. If we ever put our house on the market, it will have to be months before they arrive. And to answer your question, the rain washes some of the droppings and shells away, mitigates it somewhat for a few hours.
Claudia says
I see. Thanks for taking the time to explain. I’m so sorry you have to deal with this, Margaret.
Cara in S. FL says
Wish we had some of your rain here where the soil is sandy and plants need water in the heat!
If I could, I’d send you some sun.
Claudia says
We would be happy to send it to you. I’ve never seen a spring like this one. It’s very depressing.
Betsy says
Too much rain in NW Ct too. I still have not finished the first sweep of weeding and pruning through the gardens. For some reason it never rains on work or babysitting days. Getting a tad discouraged and tired of my husband asking me when the sun is coming out. We have solar panels which are not working very well.
No worries, soon we’ll be complaining that it’s too hot! :)
Claudia says
We just had a major downpour. I’m not in a very good mood, so I’m unable to put a positive spin on things. Too wet. Everywhere!
Penny Spencer says
Hi Claudia. The rains in Michigan are relentless. It rains and rains, stops, rains again, then at the end of the day the sun makes a last ditch effort to shine. The slugs are feasting away in my gardens, but we are fortunate compared to much of the country. I can’t believe the number of tornadoes and the flooding! Poor people who are losing much more than flowers and plants. There is a huge vintage/antique fair at the fairgrounds at the end of our road, twice a year. I’ve stopped going. The less i see, the less I buy, even though I sure want to! Take care.
Claudia says
Lots of tornadoes everywhere, even out here. Our river across the street is incredibly high.
Robin says
Tremendous rain here too Claudia. Lake Ontario has risen quite high with many properties being sandbagged in an effort to save them. We definitely are hoping for better weather in June!
Claudia says
Fingers crossed. And praying for the rain to go to the places that need it. We don’t need any more, that’s for sure.
Janet in Rochester says
Yes to rain. And YES to flooding. The lake’s – Lake Ontario – levels are tremendous! As are all the little ponds nearby. I grew up on the southern shore just north of Rochester and have never seen the levels so high. Nearly up to the roads in many places, and over the roads in some spots. The Governor was inspecting the situation last week. But we’re not unusual – water levels are raising globally – thanks to global warming. So of course the US should have pulled out of the Paris Accord. Oh I don’t want to get started on Chunky, so I won’t. But anyone with half a brain knows that we have to do something and NOW! The fact that the GOP in large part denies facts that 98% of scientists confirm is just beyond comprehension. If it was 500 years ago, they’d be flat earthers too, I guess. Well, it isn’t useful to try & figure out WHY crazy people are crazy. So I’ll shut up now. I got my hair cut last week & I can relate – mine was much too long too. And it does feel SO GOOD to have it the correct length again. So much easier to care for. You’re lucky – we’ve had the rain but only one thunderstorm last Friday. Bummer – I LOVE thunderstorms. As long as I’m inside, of course. Have a great Wednesday. Peace. ⛈

I can’t even deal with the fact that he didn’t want to see the ship USS John McCain. Or that the Navy enabled him. Shame on everyone involved in that travesty.
Chris K in Wisconsin says
Oh, the rain. And the clouds. And the general gloom. Not to mention the cool/ cold temps. It is crazy. Or maybe we are so used to having a 3 week “spring” and going right into the warmth and sun of summer before mid-May…. who knows. It is just relentless and pretty depressing. Our veggies are planted. But they just aren’t growing. The peppers need warm nights, so who knows if or when they will finally take off? I mention our little garden, but we need to think of the poor farmers with fields full of standing water. When will those fields finally be planted? But why worry about climate change? It all makes me too crazy. I still cannot watch the news.
Hope you have a good day today. I know I am reading a LOT!! (Indoors, sadly!) Enjoy the rest of your Thursday.
Claudia says
Today is a day when I just cannot handle any more damn rain. And we just got another huge downpour. Don and I took a walk this morning and our rivers right by our house are unbelievably high.
I’m so sorry for the farmers. I can’t believe how hard it must be for them. And that will be passed on to the consumers, as well.
Wendy T says
Claudia, if you decide to attend the Country Living event, have fun, take photos, and share them with us. Hope you find something you couldn’t possibly live without, for a reasonable price, take photos of it and share them with us!
Claudia says
Thanks, Wendy.
Chy says
Weather seems to be so crazy and out of sorts everywhere! We’ve had +30 Celcius temps this month already …. it’s only May! Worries me for what is to come in the Summer. I wish you could package up your rain and send it here. Yellow skies and soot falling down on our cars from fires up North that are out of control. We so need a good week of rain. Or more! My garden is starting to wilt despite my attempts to keep it cool and hydrated.
Enjoy the Fair if you go. And take pics, many, many pics!!
X Chy
Claudia says
I would be more than happy to send some your way. There always seems to be this awful imbalance – areas that need rain, don’t get it, areas that have had way too much, get even more.
Chy says
Exactly! Today, the sun is peeking through a bit and the smokey haze is much better. And for some reason, it’s cold! I’m even wearing a sweater over my tank top. The cool is most welcome. Now, if the rain would appear, we would all feel hopeful!
X Chy
Claudia says
Hoping that rain is soon on the way for you, Chy!
Donnamae says
It seems pretty obvious after reading the comments…we either have too much rain, or not enough! Chris brings up a good point about the farmers…many of their fields are still quite wet or muddy. Not suitable for planting. Wonder what that will mean for the food chain later on in the season.
You were certainly busy yesterday. The country fair might be a good outing….and well deserved by you. Would Don tag along?
Hope you enjoy your day….and your haircut! ;)
Claudia says
I feel so sorry for the farmers. I imagine it’s the same here. Nonstop rain almost every day of the week.
Don wouldn’t go along. He did go once and had an okay time, but the Fair crowds are predominately women.
Kathy says
Record heat…..in the 100’s every day. We wish we had some of your rain. :)
Claudia says
I wish you did, too!
Cheryl Lawson says
Hi Claudia,
We’ve had the same rainy weather here in Maine too. I don’t remember a Spring like this – rain and more rain. We’ve had three sunny days this Spring and the lawn is still too wet to cut. Like you, I ‘m getting really tired of waking up to yet another bleak day every day. We all need SUN and soon! Hugs, Cheryl
Claudia says
Same here. It’s all so depressing!
Kay says
No rain today! AND, the sun actually came out by early afternoon. So I ran to the nursery and got some plants to fill the rest of my big pots. It was actually sunny, hot and humid. Typical SE WI – we go right from winter to summer with no real spring at all.
3 inches is a lot. But this is the time of year to go shorter. I hope you go to the Country Living Fair. I’ve read about it but it’s held too far away when they have it in the Midwest. I’d love to attend vicariously through you since I know you’d tell us all about it. ;-)
Claudia says
My hair looks so much better. My hair grows fast, so three inches isn’t all that much, given how quickly it will grow again!
.Melanie says
Wettest May on record here for the Chicago area! It actually cleared out this morning and we had sun, glorious sun the rest of the day. It was heavenly. However, the ground is still so wet, it’s mushy. And I tried leaf-blowing all the fallen honeysuckle flowers off the patio tonight, but it’s still so wet out there that the flowers are stuck all over the patio.
We passed the river today and the banks are still overflowing. The trees that line the banks have water halfway up their trunks.
Looking at our extended forecast, I see some more sun this weekend, then chance of scattered thunderstorms almost every single day! Unreal.
Claudia says
We’re getting sun today, more storms on Saturday and Sunday. My white porch posts have a tinge of green on them from all this moisture.
Nora in CT says
Looks like the sun is peeking out here this morning, so perhaps in your area too. . I hope so. A day out at the Country Living Fair sounds delightful. Because of the rain, our woods are lush and the birds are happy. I wish I knew better who is singing what, but growing up in Southern California I didn’t learn Eastern birdsongs from the cradle and now my brain is not so smart. Still, I love to hear them. Have a lovely day looking at treasures of the past. Thank you for continuing to make our lives brighter.
Claudia says
I can identify some birdsong, but I’d like to recognize more of the calls. Enjoy the sun today, Nora.
jeanie says
So very sick of the rain. They are actually threatening several non-rainy days, including today so we will quickly throw together the patio table and have a cookout while the cooking is good. Tomorrow cloudy and both Saturday and Sunday are cooler. I’m feeling confused given the long weekend last time and then we saw Hamilton in mid-week, which felt like a Saturday and the only reason I know it is Friday is because my computer is telling me so!
Speaking of Hamilton, I liked Anastasia much better. And why do orchestras overplay the vocals — in Hamilton that’s an especially bad problem as the lyrics are so fast. But I digress.
I’ve never been to the Country Living fair and always wanted to attend one. So I hope you go so we can live vicariously through you!
Claudia says
I loved Hamilton – I saw it on Broadway. It’s just a different kind of musical, and I have to say, it was one of the most exciting theatrical experiences of my life. Anastasia is more traditional. Apples and oranges, as they say!
Yesterday, both Don and I kept thinking it was Friday. We’re completely off this week!
jeanie says
True. I think my Hamilton issue was the orchestra which was so loud over the vocals or at least over the raps, it was difficult to hear them. So you had to concentrate so hard on trying to figure it out (and I knew the music from listening) that I think I missed a lot of it. I liked the second act a great deal and think if I saw it again I might be more engaged.

enjoy reading your blog and seeing your lovely cottage pictures. Good luck with all you’ve got going on.
Here in southwestern Ohio (Dayton area), the community is reeling from 15 tornadoes that struck late Memorial Day night. Thousands remain without power, water is finally being restored. We were fortunate with no damage to our property; we were without power for a period of time. Yet just one mile from us homes are destroyed!! Streets and streets of destroyed homes, cars; huge trees uprooted and thrown throughout. Businesses destroyed. Our local mall just got power back this morning (Friday) since Monday night. Doctors offices, daycares, restaurants -if not destroyed, then closed since no power or water. Amazingly only one death occurred from the tornadoes. Another miracle, the tornado was headed directly toward Dayton Children’s Hospital but turned at the last moments! The community is working diligently to help. We are so grateful for the multitude of helpers both here & coming from other states to help. Pray for Ohio!!
Claudia says
I am so sorry. I can’t imagine the devastation. It has impacted so many. Whenever this kind of disaster happens, I seem to be incapable of finding the right words. We are praying for everyone in Ohio and Indiana and other areas that have been hit by this destruction. xoxo
