The view from where I sit as I write this post.
What did I ever do without WiFi?
The bullfrog (or bullfrogs) is awfully chatty this morning. It’s almost non-stop. It’s a gorgeous sunny day and rain is expected tomorrow, so I’m going to enjoy the weather while I can. I do have to run errands; buy groceries, go to the bank, mail the bills…buy another stone dove…
I mowed the entire front lawn yesterday. Of course, I took a nice break halfway through, drinking water and rocking on the glider.
Then I got back to it. It’s a heck of a lot of work.
But it looks awfully pretty this morning.
I watched Cinema Paradiso last night on Netflix. It may be my favorite movie; at the very least, it’s tied with To Kill a Mockingbird. If you’ve never seen it, you should remedy that. Glorious, moving, funny, heartbreaking and ultimately, life-affirming. I couldn’t get it out of my mind – that happens every time I see it – and since Don is the person who introduced me to it, I had to call him and talk through my highly emotional state at the end of the movie.
I cannot say enough about how much I love it and how much I needed to see it, given these times. I’ll choose “Life-Affirming” for $200, Alex.
A couple of photos of the secret garden (for lack of a better term) behind the kitchen, now with four vintage English pots.
I guess Monday is a holiday? Now that I’m not working very much, I’m no longer up on these things. It’s just another day, although there will be a steady stream of RVs and trailers headed for the campground down the road. People come from all over the place to camp right where I live.
Lucky me!
Happy Friday.
kathy in iowa says
glad you can rest a bit with the bigger tasks (all that mowing) done for now.
and that you bought two more old pots. they look very pretty there.
haven’t seen that movie so will check it out sometime. thanks for the tip.
more heat and high humidity here for the next week. i am not a fan of that at all! i love the colors and rains in springtime, the coolness and ease of fall and the noise-muffling beauty of snow in winter. i appreciate that some people love hot weather and humidity doesn’t bother them, that some crops need the summer heat … and then get myself to some water. hope you’re keeping comfy.
sorry if you must deal with lots of extra traffic with the camping in summertime. any news on the “glamping”/resort proposal? hope it goes the way you want.
and that you get the dove partner and have a nice long weekend!

Claudia says
I, for one, have never functioned well in high humidity. I wilt. I get cranky. Thank goodness for A/C.
Oh, the traffic isn’t too bad, it’s just interesting!
Nothing new on the glamping. It’s still under consideration. xo
shanna says
Ah, Cinema Paradiso—one of my favorites, too!
Isn’t it odd how ditching the nine to five world can make holidays seem redundant? They don’t mean much around here either, except for the influx of partying neighbors and the noise they bring to the usually peaceful forest. Oh well, this too shall pass, though not quickly enough.
Happy Dove hunting. (Hope she saved it for you!) Enjoy that beautiful yard and all of your hard work.
Claudia says
I haven’t asked her to save it, so I’m hoping it’s there! Yes, we’ll get noise as well. A pox on them!
Estelle from France says
I totally agree with you! It’s a marvellous movie! It is sometimes funny, sometimes joyfull, sometimes heartbreaking but always wonderful! Perhaps it’s because of its simplicity…
Did you see it in english or in italian with english subtitles?
Claudia says
I watched it with subtitles, Estelle. I think I need to watch it again this weekend!
Estelle says
It’s so much better in the original version! And you’re right: it’s a movie that deserves to be timeless enjoyed!
Claudia says
Yes, it is!
Kay says
That film now goes on my “must watch” list for Netflix. Claudia, your “secret garden” is just beautiful. Those pots were meant to be there. I put out pansies in the garden in too small of a pot apparently and the bunnies ate every single purple bloom. Sigh. We’re looking forward to a long – hot – weekend here. Spring didn’t last long, but I’m not complaining!
Claudia says
So far, the bunnies have ignored my pansies. Fingers crossed! Enjoy your weekend, Kay.
Linda @ A La Carte says
I love how the secret garden looks! Enjoy your busy day and I hope the dove is still there for you. Funny how something just sticks in our minds and we know it was meant for us. Mom has a Dr’s appt today and then a bit of shopping and then I hope a quiet weekend except for the time with the Grands! I’ve never seen that movie but will watch this weekend. I need something life affirming right now!
Claudia says
A quiet weekend for me, too.
Chris K in Wisconsin says
Those pots just look as if they were destined to be there. Just lovely!!
We live pretty much right between Madison and Wisconsin Dells (and Devil’s Lake), so there is always a steady bit of traffic coming through town. When I was working, several of our meeting rooms faced the highway and I remember so many times looking out the window and then just “jumping in” a car going by and pretend I, too, was headed on a fun vaca. Helped make the never ending hours of meetings go by a bit more quickly.
I wish we really could just pick a square from the board and “ask Alex” for a few days of peace ~ and have the fake president shut his sputtering gross mouth. I would, indeed, pay good money for that!!
kathy in iowa says
hi, chris.
my sister and i will be part of the traffic in your area this sunday and monday. we are making a quick trip up to hear some music in the dells, also going through the house on the rock (she’s not seen it before). you live in a pretty state!
hope you and everyone else have a great weekend!
kathy in iowa
Chris K in Wisconsin says
Have a wonderful time!! Love House on the Rock. 2 weeks ago my son and his GF took some friends who had never been. It is a very interesting “house”, and Frank Lloyd Wright was quite the interesting man. The Spring Green area is really beautiful.
Claudia says
Oh, for a few days of peace! No tweets, no lies, no horrifying decisions from the WH.
Wendy T says
If it’s a warm weekend, we’ll have out of towners flocking to our beach too. Usually it’s a bit too cool to lay out, but in hot weather, our beach is really nice. Years ago, part of the beach was fenced off to protect the shorebirds that nest there. There’s a nice, albeit short, boardwalk where birders and other interested naturalists can walk out amongst the nests without disturbing the birds. The traffic heading to the beach can sure clog our main artery, but since I don’t live near it, I’m not impacted. I just use another route if I need to go near the area. How big is your porch, Claudia? I think it gets afternoon sun? It sure is a brilliant place to while away the hours with book and coffee.
Claudia says
It’s big. That’s all I can say. It spans the front of the house. It covers two sides of the house. It gets afternoon sun and it can get really hot out there!
jane says
The view looks lovely. Too bad they don’t have a mower version of the Roomba, so you could mow and sit on the porch at the same time. We all want that.
Claudia says
Oh, wouldn’t that be great!
Donnamae says
The entrance to your secret garden looks wonderful. Those pots are a great addition. So glad to hear you are going back to get the dove…fingers crossed for you.
It’s hot here…and more humid by the hour. I don’t do well as things heat up…I wilt, too…and get cranky. Is that an age thing I wonder? I used to be able to handle the heat better. Enjoy your day! ;)
Claudia says
It hit 89 here today and is very, very humid. More of the same tomorrow. I don’t think it’s an age thing. I’ve never been able to deal with humidity!
tammy j says
oh thank you for the pictures of the pots! being vintage they look like they’ve already been there a long time. always a lovely thing to me.
i haven’t seen Cinema Paradiso in ages. i’ll have to remedy that!
that ‘view’ on your porch is beautiful. simply. beautiful! xo
Claudia says
Thank you, Tammy. Yes, watch that movie. It will make you feel good. And it will make you cry.
Janet in Rochester says
What a spot you have there, Claudia! Seriously. Your very own idyll, and almost all of your own making! Hope you’re able to enjoy a lot of time there this weekend, and that any rain is short-lived. We only have a 40% probability of rain on Sunday here, so I’m hoping it’ll be a typical summery Memorial Day weekend. Glad to learn you’re getting another stone dove – the pair of them will look so cute – and no one will be lonely – LOL. Peace.

Rain tomorrow night and on Tuesday. It’s very, very humid and hit 89 today! Too hot!
edis laudicene castilho says
This film makes me very emotional, I have watched many times and I always cry. One of the many reasons to follow your blog is that although we are from very different countries I identify with you a lot.
Claudia says
It’s nice to know that countries of origin don’t make a difference, Edis!
Dottie says
Your porch looks like a little bit of heaven here on earth. That is how I think of my porch. I love listening to the birds singing! So glad you decided to get the other dove. Love love love the four vintage English pots! They look lovely at the entrance to the Secret Garden.
Claudia says
Thank you so much, Dottie. I’m really glad I found them!
Marilyn says
Good luck with dove hunting. Your secret garden is lovely. I agree with you concerning AC. We have it on throughout the late Spring and Summer. It helps with our allergies.
Marilyn
Claudia says
AC really helps. I had it on all day today!
Deb says
Everything looks just lovely. What a perfect spot your porch is. I love, love Cinema Paradiso and haven’t seen it in ages. That and TKAM are also my top 2. I do love some current movies and have seen wonderful ones in the last few years but it seems most that make it to theaters today involve actors in a onesie in front of a green screen. 😄 Wish I bought stock in Marvel.
Claudia says
Don’t we all???? Thanks, Deb!
Cathy says
Thank you for your lovely blog. We, hubby and I just watched Cinema Paradiso and we just loved it. I will need to watch again for some things I missed but what a nice way to spend this evening. Oh and your yard and especially the Secret Garden part is coming along nicely. Thank you for sharing.
Claudia says
Isn’t it wonderful? So glad you enjoyed it, Cathy. Thank you!
Regula says
It’s green and green and green. I love it.
Claudia says
Yes, green!! Thanks, Regula.
