On yarrow.
On the clematis.
On catmint.
On Solomon’s Seal.
You know that I love to take photos of insect life in the garden. Sometimes I deliberately focus on the bug. Sometimes, as in the case of the clematis, I have no idea there is a bug there until I look at the photo on my computer. I love surprises like that.
I spent some time walking around the gardens taking pictures yesterday, in between yanking weeds, watering plants, and repotting the monstera plant in the living room (with Don’s help, that baby is big!)
It’s raining here today, an all-day-long steady rain. Looks like we’ll be indoors for the day. I’m debating cleaning the bathroom – well, not debating that one, it needs it – and cleaning out my dresser drawers, which are so stuffed with clothing that I can’t fit everything in there. We have one dresser each (Don’s suffers from the same malady) and one small closet that we share. That hearkens back to yesterday’s topic and walk-in closets. Never had one. And yes, I’d like a bigger closet. But it ain’t gonna happen.
Heck, we were just happy to have a half-bath upstairs right outside the door to our bedroom when we bought this cottage. In the rental we lived in for our first four years out east, having to go to the bathroom during the night required walking down the stairs, then through the living room, dining room, kitchen and laundry room until we reached the tiny bathroom at the back of the house. Try staying sleepy during that trek. It was bad enough 18 years ago, but now that we’re – ahem – older, the amount of travel that we would have to undertake during the night would be a giant pain in the tush.
I love tiny houses, but the thought of sitting up in bed, crawling backwards to the ladder-like steps, climbing down – visiting the bathroom – then climbing up again, and crawling (literally) back into bed is too much for this girl. That’s a young person’s game.
Happy Thursday.

who would design a house like that with the bathroom so far away from the bedroom?!?
glad you have the half-bath upstairs to make nighttime trips more convenient.
i’ll leave it for you to focus on the bugs! the only reason i want to know where they are is so i can stay away from them. :)
good luck with the chores and hope you have a happy day (rain aside).

It was very old. I suspect the kitchen and bathrooms were add-ons when indoor plumbing was a possibility.

I also am of a certain age and live in a house with bath down/bedroom up. Inconvenient as it is, this arrangement is a major upgrade from 1720 when former owners had to deal with nocturnal trips to the outhouse. Perspective is everything.
kathy in iowa says
anne v …
agree about perspective … and am grateful to not have to use an outhouse!
kathy in iowa who is also of a certain age
Claudia says
I’ve used them. More times than I could ever begin to count.
Claudia says
I grew up going to a family cottage that had an outhouse and frequently had to go outside during the night. I also camped with my family and was a camp counselor for two summers – all using outhouses. I’m very familiar with nocturnal trips to the outhouse!

As bug go, those are beauties! Nice photos, too. Rain, whitecaps, and white skies around here—what else is new? Meh. I was over it weeks ago.
Claudia says
Me too!

Claudia I love the tiny houses but know I would never make it up and down those ladders in the night time. I am spoiled by have a bathroom off my bedroom although in my duplex it isn’t all that big so any bathroom would be close :) Tiger is getting braces on his teeth and had spacers put in yesterday. I will see him later today an d let him complain all he wants. He truly is the sweetest boy and owns my heart.
Claudia says
Oh, sweet Tiger! Grandmas are there to listen and console and you do that!

Love your photos Claudia. It is funny how times change. Growing up five of us shared a tiny bath and thought nothing of it. I am embarrassed to say my husband and I now have four bathrooms for the two of us…….and this isn’t a huge house! But I do love having an ensuite……I barely open my eyes during my night time visits!
Claudia says
I can top you on that one! Six of us shared one bath in my childhood home! It hardly seems possible now, but share it we did!
Donnamae says
Those are remarkable pictures you took. I assume you had your big girl camera? Anytime I see a bee, I give it plenty of space…and back my tush up.
Glad to hear you have a bath right outside your bedroom, and you don’t have to make that long trek like in the past. That ‘walk in the middle of the night to the closest bathroom’, always woke me up, to the point I couldn’t fall back asleep. And, I was much younger then.
Sorry to hear you have rain…it was here yesterday. So tomorrow, you should have sunshine, right? It is quite cool here today. Hubby saw a report that our weather will be cooler this summer and wetter. No! Hope you enjoy your day! ;)
Claudia says
Yes, I was using my big girl camera.
The rain has stopped and the sun is trying to come out, but it only emerges for a brief time.
Chris K in Wisconsin says
I saw the same report that Donnamae’s husband saw. I don’t mind the cooler summer, as 70’s sound pretty great to me ~ esp since we won’t have to run the AC much!! The “wetter” is the catch, though. ugh. This morning at 7:00 AM they said the wind chill was 39*. Now THAT is pretty crazy!! But the sun is bright and beautiful, so there is that!
Have a good Thursday, Claudia! And I love the pics today. So much going on in our yards that we rarely see!
Claudia says
Wetter we don’t need! Thanks, Chris!

I don’t mind the little bugs! they’re just going about their important duties for the day.
I’m just glad that no spiders were involved. that’s where I have to not watch!
I know in their own way in the scheme of things I realize their importance… I just don’t want to SEE it! LOL! your pictures are ALWAYS so beautiful!!!
ditto on the tiny houses and the ladder. otherwise I do LOVE them! I could live in one easily.
plus… if I had a dog I’d want him/her to sleep where I sleep!
you can only use so many clothes. and most people never wear even half of what they own!
it’s a lot less stressful to just get rid of them and give them to others who might need them.
Claudia says
We sort of like spiders around here!
I basically wear jeans and t-shirts and the occasional dress. Like you, I don’t really need many clothes and I often donate them to the Salvation Army. Thanks, Tammy!
tammy j says
I TRY to like spiders! especially after reading and loving Charlotte’s Web as a child.
but we have tarantula types here… among the regulars and that kind of did me on all of them.
and they’re so sneaky! they drop from the ceiling if they come in. well not the tarantulas.
my brother takes any he finds outside. luckily I have only had a couple little ones inside my apt where I live now! (hope I didn’t just jinx it by saying that now! LOL)

I love tiny houses! But, I, too, realize how impractical they are for me. A tiny house would hardly be able to hold all my craft supplies, much less the necessities of life (clothes, food, cooking supplies, etc.). However, I think about having a tiny house on my property to house only my crafts. That would be so nice! An acquaintenance of mine owned what she deemed a “money pit home”, full of charm and original fittings, but needing quite a bit of work. When she was ready to sell it, she gave me first refusal, but at the time, and even now, I realize I couldn’t devote my life and most of my savings to rehab those parts of the house that she did not. However, the huge temptation was the refurbished carriage house that she turned into a craft studio, with cabinets and counters all along the walls, a sink, a frig, two huge tables in the middle, and a sleeping loft for naps between projects! How I would have love a structure like that!
Claudia says
I would too! Wouldn’t that be heaven?? Thanks, Wendy!

Since we have been living in an 8×28 foot camper for a year, I understand small spaces. You are correct. You just have to keep your stuff to a minimum and constantly reevaluate what is a necessity.
Funny though you realize just how little you actually need. 4 cups, 4 plates, etc. It is freeing in many ways.
I agree with you that some of those people on the home improvement shows are just spoiled brats.
Anyway, I love the bug photos. Hoping you get sun soon.
Claudia says
I lived in an apartment that size when I first moved to Boston. I understand!
jeanie says
Lovely bugs!
And yes, my choice of house was based on things that had no relevance at the time but one day would — one floor, bathroom handy to bedroom. Of course, it’s an old house and I have a feeling the doors are to narrow to a) have a wheelchair go through and b) even fit today’s full-size, over-sized sofas (I long for just a basic, old couch like they used to make!).
Claudia says
Unfortunately, we have bedrooms up a flight of stairs! But its a short flight, so there’s that.
