We look for signs of spring, signs of new growth. After a winter that lingered much, much too long, we’re off to a late start this spring. But the signs are there, if you look closely – buds on the lilac bush, for example.
Tulips leaves poking out of the ground.
Tiny little signs. Buds on the Wiegela bush. Day lilies showing themselves and sedum buds in the garden.
Tiny, almost imperceptible buds on some of the trees.
The entrance to the woods looks like this:
Leaves on the ground, trees still bare. But soon there will be a canopy of leaves, and we will once again see that the ‘woods are lovely, dark and deep.’ (Robert Frost) This woods of ours will be transformed.
Yesterday, as we were still in bed, waking up slowly, Don and I sang:
Little darling
it’s been a long cold lonely winter
Little darling
it feels like years since it’s been here.
Here comes the sun
Here comes the sun, and I say
It’s all right.
(George Harrison)
I can’t imagine a more fitting lyric for the winter we’ve just been through, as well as the time we’ve had to spend apart.
I love that song and now it’s cycling through my mind all the time.
It’s all right.
Happy Saturday.

So glad for you to see that the clouds, both literal and figurative, have finally lifted! Love your photos of the harbingers of Spring. Every year, I wait for the leaves to appear. I worry aloud to Noble that I think we are not getting any leaves and each year he patiently reassures me they will soon unfurl . . . and they always do. Even now, little flower heads are casting off their dirt berets and reaching toward the sun. Lilacs are the true test. Farmers would plant them because when they bloomed, it meant the ground was warm enough to plant their crops. Noble heads to NYC for 2 months but at least he can come home Sundays. Happy (finally) Spring!
Claudia says
Does he have Monday off as well, Tina? Or just Sunday? Of course, maybe you can also meet each other in the city?
Tina says
It’s strange. He has Sundays off for rehearsal and then when they are performing he will have Mondays off. So he can come home on Saturday nights, spend Sundays here and go in with me to the city Monday morning. For performance weeks, I’ll use my vacation days for Mondays. And he can meet me for lunch by my office. Not too bad. It’s been worse.
Linda @ Itsy Bits And Pieces says
Lovely photos, Claudia! Looking forward to some of that growth and sun here! It’s raining today, but I know that brings the green!
Claudia says
We’re supposed to get cold temps mid week next week, so I’m not going to uncover my garden yet.
An Enchanted Cottage says
Oooh, signs of spring here, too, Claudia! Little buds everywhere – it’s so exciting! I see the path you were talking about. What fun you’ll have walking through the woods! Ahhh, my George. He was my favorite Beatle growing up. What wonderful memories I have of meeting him. But back to the present, here’s to spring arriving in the Northeast! Yeah! Enjoy this gorgeous weekend!!
Donna
Claudia says
George wasn’t my favorite when I was young, but now that I’m older, I appreciate his talent so much!
Janet in Rochester says
Loved your photos today, Claudia. Sometimes I think I like the new little baby plants first pushing their way out even better than the full-grown beauties. PS – guess what tune will be circulating through my head all day today? Have a great outside day!
Claudia says
We worked outside for quite a while – now we’re watching the Red Sox and Yankees.
Chris k in Wisconsin says
My lilacs look exactly as do yours! Can’t wait for that wonderful fragrance to fill the air. That is a bit of time away yet, but seeing those buds is totally enough for now. The grass is no longer totally brown, as it, too, has a mere hint of green showing through. Can’t wait for the scent of that grass when it is freshly mowed. It has been sunny and in the upper 60’s for several days in a row now. And today we have the forecast of an inch or two of snow for Sunday night into Monday and highs in the 40’s next week. But these sightings in the yard allow me to know that it is just one of the disappointing moments Spring brings us every year, and it, too, shall pass. No shovels will be needed, as the emerging warmth we have finally felt will take care of it for us ~ and we win!!
Claudia says
We have 2 or 3 days of cold temps coming up, Chris – maybe some snow but most likely that will be in the mountains.
Carolyn Marie says
Love that song!
Claudia says
Me too, Carolyn Marie!
Missy George says
Lovin this little taste of spring that we are having..70-80’s..Back to the 50’s next week..Enjoy!!
Claudia says
Back to the 30s and 40s next week for us, Missy!
Linda @ A La Carte says
Spring….Finally! Enjoy!
Claudia says
Finally!

Claudia says

Laura says
So happy to see that you have some signs of spring, Claudia. xo Laura
Claudia says
Small signs, but signs, nevertheless, Laura.
Kathy says
One of my favorite songs!! Now I’ll be singing it and smiling all day.
Claudia says
Good! As long as it makes you smile, Kathy!
Donnamae says
And…now I have that song going in my head. But…that’s all right too! Gloomy day here…but, we too, have some buds…there’s hope in there! Grass is much greener too…next week a little bump on the road is forecasted. Stay well! ;)
Claudia says
We have that same bump headed our way. Winter is having a hard time saying goodbye, Donna!
Tammy says
Now that song is gonna be in my head but it’s alright since it is such a great one! :) Cheers to spring! Tammy
Claudia says
Amen, Tammy!
Susie says

Claudia says
Yes, it is, Susie!
Nancy in PA says
Claudia, your photographs are lovely, as always.
This is off-topic: I found a real-life refrigerator that matches the sweet one that you made for the dollhouse!

(SMEG stands for Smalterie Metallurgiche Emiliane Guastal)
A major appliance in your favorite color!
Claudia says
Yes, I saw that post, Nancy! And I thought of my little wooden refrigerator.
Kelly says
Happy Spring!
Claudia says
Thank you, Kelly!
Melanie says
You know that I sang those lyrics when reading this post, right? ;-) My lilac bush is budding now too, and plants are starting to emerge from the ground. It was a glorious 74 degrees here today, though we did have one heck of a thunderstorm here this morning, complete with hail. Unfortunately, temps will dip and it will only be high of 41 on Monday with chance of sn** flurries!
Claudia says
The cold is coming back tomorrow! Ah well!
Monica says
How amazing that you have your own woods! Here in England I’m getting used to that (no such thing in my Country of origin!)… and I dream of having our own too, one day (now we’re renting and have it :))! Can’t wait to see more… if you’ll share it with us.
I meant to ask, Claudia- any idea where I can find the book to move from Blogger to WordPress? I have tried to purchase it, but looks like it is not for sale anylonger? Or it’s just me that look in the wrong places!
Thanks!
Monica xo
Claudia says
She took it off the market to revise it (several months ago) and it looks like she hasn’t finished yet. But here is the link to her blog
http://www.goodtrueandbeautiful.com/tech/thinking-about-moving-to-wordpress/
Perhaps you could write her and ask her about it, Monica?
Monica says
So very kind of you, Claudia! I had no idea, and continued to find broken links to purchase it!
Thanks so much, I’ll follow your advice!:)
