I managed a quick check-in with the lilacs yesterday.
It’s going to rain all day today and tomorrow so no work outside, but I will most likely pot up the impatiens I purchased the other day from the relative dryness of the porch.
Yesterday. I woke up at 4 am and couldn’t get back to sleep. Don woke up about a half hour later. We didn’t have to be awake that early, but there you go. We had to be at the surgery to check in by 8:15. Don has told me how massive this Orthopedic practice is and it sure is. It’s huge! There’s the main practice and then there’s a physical therapy practice and a separate surgery center. They are incredibly organized, as well.
We checked in at the Surgery Center and shortly after that Don was whisked away to the OR. I got text updates throughout. I knew when he entered pre-op, when he was actually having the surgery, and when he was in post-op. Then I got a call from a nurse who told me when to drive to a separate entrance to pick him up. He had decided he didn’t want to go fully under and was just going to have a local, but a discussion with the anesthesiologist changed his mind and he went for a light kind of twilight. As they were having him change beds to be rolled into surgery, he went under and stayed under until he woke up in recovery.
I, of course, had envisioned him sitting on the end of an examination table as the doctor did a relatively quick bit of surgery and I couldn’t have been more wrong! But it went well. We drove back home, stopping at the grocery store to pick up a few things including extra-strength Tylenol. The pain killer they prescribed can be addictive, and Don doesn’t want to take that.
He hadn’t been able to eat or drink since midnight and was starving. I made him coffee and breakfast when we got back home and he proceeded to eat all day long like someone who had been deprived of food for days.
Anyway, his thumb was numb for most of the day. But late last night, the pain kicked in, so he’s taking that Tylenol. This morning, he seems okay. Not a lot of pain yet and since he’s used to enduring pain in that hand, he has a high tolerance for it.
Now, he has to take it easy for a week or so and we’ll see how this progresses.
All in all, a long day, but we’re so glad the surgery is over. Now, healing begins.
I expressed my worries about Deb in Phoenix and Brenda. I wrote to both of them the other day. I heard back from Deb and her comment is on Thursday’s post. So glad to hear from her. I have not heard from Brenda, which isn’t like her. Let’s keep sending positive thoughts her way and hopefully, at some point, I’ll get an update.
Thanks for all of your positive thoughts and prayers. We’re going to take it easy this weekend. Last night, Don said, “It will be a couple of days before I can drive.” I looked at him and said, “You cannot drive for a week.” He looked stunned. Then he said “Well, I can ride along, right?”
“Yes.”
Stay safe.
Happy Saturday.

Beautiful lilacs! I am happy to hear that Don is doing well. It’s always a relief when things like this are over! I’ve had hand surgery, so I figured it might be more than you were expecting. My best to Don.

Beautiful lilacs. Am so pleased all went well with Don’s surgery. If it’s raining, it’s the perfect opportunity to rest up inside after such a long tiring day.
Sending positive thoughts to Brenda, I hope you hear back from her soon.

whew … glad that part’s over for don and you! prayers continue for his quick and complete, easy recuperation.
i know you’d rather have sunshine and be out in the gardens, but maybe the rain has a message for you to stay in and rest (because it’s not easy seeing someone you love in pain or have a health problem. and you’ll have cooking to do for a while). the sun is still up there and the clouds will part, so in the meantime i hope you can take it easy, too.
thanks for the update.
beautiful lilacs and photo!
feeling good enough here to take a couple of paper grocery sacks of papers to get shredded at a bank in town (but that’s about it). much appreciate that shredding service and feeling some better. i will take it easy then, too.
hope you, don and everyone else have a nice, easy day and stay safe.

Surgery is stressful but glad it’s over for him. It’s been so cold and windy I haven’t planted anything yet. Maybe next week.

So glad to hear Don’s surgery went so smoothly. I laughed at the fact that he ate all day because he was deprived of food for a little while beforehand. I have done the same! Also, your lilac photos are gorgeous!!

So happy to hear .Don’s surgery went well. Now on to a full recovery!
Your lilacs are gorgeous…such a pretty picture on this cooler and rainy day here, too. I got quite a lot of yard work done in the last two days…now I have a mandatory break due to the weather. But, next week promises to be a good week around here, so I have that to look forward to.
Enjoy your day! ;)
Claudia says
Thank you, Donnamae.

Kay in SE WI says
So glad everything went well for Don. He should take it easy and let it heal in its own time. I learned that lesson last fall when, after major surgery, I wasn’t allowed to drive for 8 weeks! But, like Don, I could “ride along.” :-)
Take care,
K.
Claudia says
Thank you, Kay.

Vicki says
It’s a ‘claustrophobic’ feeling when they tell you that you can’t drive for awhile; for me, the most was about ten weeks ‘grounded’; that one was from abdominal surgery (the first one) but I also had this happen about thirteen years ago when I broke my foot; couldn’t put any pressure on the accelerator or brake; I don’t even LIKE to drive but I want the choice, so it made me feel trapped; also because, at the time, my husband was working long hours away from home at a full-time job and he was my designated (absent) chauffeur. Trapped!
Glad Don got thru everything okay; just hoping the pain level stays manageable for him. Sometimes Day 3 and Day 4 after surgery can be unpleasant, at least in my experience more than once, but we’ll hope not for Don. (Well, you had gallbladder surgery, didn’t you Claudia? You know the drill!)
Lilacs; heavenly-looking; wish I could know the scent. Thanks, Claudia, for putting up such a pretty photo today. We’re dark and gray in coastal Southern Calif (marine layer; fog; haze; no sun so far at 10am), so I loved that purply-pop of color this morning; we’re supposed to be in a heat wave (they ARE, a bit more inland); then, some rain, maybe-hopefully, next week; we’ll still take anything we can get in our usually-drought-ridden locale.
I think it’s so nice how you keep track of your reader-community; that you care; that you notice. I know when I’ve had an absence that you expressed a concern about me, too, and I appreciated it. Glad Deb checked in; now if we could just know about brendab.
Claudia says
Thanks, Vicki. They didn’t tell him that, but with one hand unavailable, it’s obvious. He just hadn’t thought that through until I mentioned it.
Stay safe.
Marilyn Schmuker says
Glad to hear Don’s surgery went well…wishing him a speedy recovery.
Your lilacs are beautiful! Mine are behind yours and haven’t begun to open. I am looking forward to the smell.
It is going to be a rainy cold weekend for us too. Actually, the forcast for the whole week looks about the same. We have 2 granddaughters playing soccer and 1 running track so we are trying to go to most of their events but I hate being cold AND wet. I can handle it if it’s one or the other but both is just miserable.
Have a restful weekend
Take care
Claudia says
Rainy and cold here, as well.
Thank you, Marilyn.

linda in ky says
dear Claudia/Don — so glad surgical ordeal is over – I am always in an anesthesia “fog” for at least a week after — no driving for a week is certainly good policy (for me !!!!) thinking of y’all hoping back to normal very soon. stay safe/healthy
Claudia says
He only has one hand available, so that’s why he can’t drive.
Thank you, Linda.
Stay safe.

Beautiful lilac shot—wish I could smelllll them. For now, I’ll have to settle for the fragrance of chocolate chip cookies baking.
Feel better soon, Don, and just enjoy the ride-along.

Thank you, Shanna.

I’m glad things went well and the patient is doing fine. I’m bet he’s glad he made that apple pie! Your lilacs had to have made for a beautiful “welcome home.” I’m sure it has been a stressful time but it sounds like everything is on the upswing for you both. I hope Deb and Brenda are OK.
Claudia says
Thank you, Jeanie. Deb responded on Thursday’s post. Brenda – I haven’t heard from and it’s making me more worried.
Stay safe.

So happy to hear all went well with “the procedure”. Being a patient patient isn’t easy. Hope Don’s able to play his guitar again soon. My best to you both.

Thank you Barb.

Chris K in WI says
Being an impatient patient is pretty common, and it certainly teaches one the value of patience. So glad the surgery went well. Be sure he listens to all of his instructions. A week of rest, relaxation, and no driving will certainly be worth it when he can pick up his guitar and play again!!
You take care of YOU, also!! Lots of Grace is necessary, so be sure you both indulge! Take care.
Claudia says
I’m on it!
Thank you, Chris.
Stay safe.
