Lilacs, Quince and a Bunny

May 10, 2018 at 9:21 am by Claudia

Not quite fully open, and fewer blooms than last year, but I’ll take it. I was walking down the driveway to the mailbox and I caught a whiff of that heavenly scent. Nothing better.

It’s another lovely day; that is, until this afternoon, when we’re to get thunderstorms. I did a lot of work outside yesterday. I sowed the seeds for the morning glories and moonflowers. Today I’ll sow the zinnias. I added more top soil to a few of the garden beds. I weeded the big garden bed so I could mulch. And then I mulched. All this and a trip to the nursery to get the mulch and a flat of impatiens and some plants for the area behind the kitchen. I’ve never really done anything with it, but I’m going to slowly change that. It could be a lot  prettier than it is.

My back is complaining this morning as are my allergies. But…that’s spring for you.

Though the lilac has less flowers than usual, the flowering quince is outdoing itself (they’re  in the same area of the lawn.) Orange flowers everywhere!

Just when I was thinking I hadn’t seen a bunny in quite a while, I saw this guy just outside the kitchen door.

I love the way the light shines through his ears. The same thing happened with Scout. I never tired of seeing it.

Okay. Have to get a move on. I’m definitely on the clock today as I only have the morning to work outside.

Happy Thursday.

Ah, bunnies! They play havoc with my garden vegetables but I can forgive them as they are so interesting to watch. We have a park at the end of our crescent and I figure they live there and treat my yard as a favorite restaurant.

I love them. They occasionally eat things in my garden, but not all that much.

I love seeing the bunnies. I need to get some potting soil for my Mom since she wants to try another tomato plant this year. I’m doing well after the root canal (it wasn’t bad just a long time to keep my mouth open). It’s sunny today so that makes me very happy. Hugs.

rain itself is a good thing (as you know) for plants and wildlife … and now for you, requiring you to take a break after all that work outside! :) hope your back feels better and the allergies don’t cause you trouble.

love the scent of lilacs, the orange quince, the bunny’s almost-see-through ears … thank you.

thanks, too, for the tour of the community garden in nyc yesterday. how nice for people who live around so much brick and concrete and noise to have that little oasis, to raise some of their own produce and flowers … and for don to get a key to visit it. i hope you get in to see the more private gardens up close!

    happy thursday and every day.

I haven’t been getting much done the past couple of days as we have had 5 Baltimore Orioles at our feeder most of the day. Lots of fighting and feathers flying. We have filled the jelly every day as they have emptied it. I am wondering if they have nested close by. So much fun to watch!

Sounds like you have really been busy in your yard. I have an abundance of plants sitting and waiting to be put into some earth. We have had the 70’s and 80’s for well over a week now, and tomorrow it is supposed to be only a high of 44*!! The temps surely are “springing”!

Have a good Thursday, and hope you can enjoy the rainy afternoon with a nice rest.

    Oh, I love the bunny!

My auntie would make quince jam; I don’t know where she got the fruit. But your quince is decorative, right? I know nothing about quince. I should go read up on it.

Nope, it has fruit. I’ve just never really investigated it or tried to eat it.

My daughters had an after school job of taking care of a neighbor’s menagerie of Belgian hares, rabbits and guinea pigs. As the years went by, some of them have died, and he adopted new rescues. Even though my daughters are past high school, they still take care of his animal companions on a daily basis. He has them in roomy large individual enclosures, except the bonded pair of Duchess rabbits live together, but he regularly lets them out to his enclosed backyard to stretch their legs and nibble on rabbit-safe plants. They hop in when called, usually right to their enclosure. It’s quite a sight! He loves his animal companions as much as we love our cats…all family members, as you know.

Your bunny pic is so cute. I miss the bunnies…they are few and far between. I suspect our predator population has made sure of that.

It’s really cooled down today…bought some more plants….now on to getting them in some soil before it rains again. A week or so ago, we were behind in total yearly rainfall…now we are ahead. Happy day to you! ;)

I haven’t seen a wild rabbit around since I was a wee bit of a girl.

Unsure if you are aware or not Claudia … if you trim all the spent blooms of your lilac you will have a more abundance of blooms the following year. I always waited until the fall to do this tedious task.

    Since I’m an ‘Impatient’ gardener … I purchased 5 6packs of Zinnia ‘Dreamland’ today for our pollinator friends. This will be my first year growing Zinnia’s so if anyone has any wisdom to impart I’m all ears. {smile}

I no longer use top soil, but rather a composted manure called Moo Doo { red lettering on the bag } in the spring & fall where we can’t fertilize in Zone 4 after August 20th.

Okay, saw a beautiful ‘city’ garden on your Instagram feed now to catch-up here on your blog.

Everyone have a wonderful Mother’s Day whether your a mother or not!

Thank you for reminding me about that! I never remember to do that in the fall and this year, I will!

I love your lilacs. How beautiful. I planted 2 bushes a couple years ago and have a very long way to go to enjoy them much.

I planted this rather small bush several years ago. It takes time!

The lilacs are pretty. I did mow the grass this week. Today my sister and I raked and seeded the front lawn. It had a lot of bare spots.

You have been busy! I am very much looking forward to my own lilac flowering in the not too distant future (it is a new shrub, no flowers this year). Bunnies are sweet. We don’t get them in Glasgow as there are far too many foxes. Thanks for reminding me of my zinnia seeds, better get those in the ground soon. Happy gardening. x

I got my zinnia seeds in the ground yesterday. I do have an extra pack, and I’m contemplating where to sow them.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
