It’s already Friday. I can’t believe how quickly we’re at the end of another week. It’s frightening, really. Especially at this age.
A few things:
♦ A friend of mine on Instagram sent me a direct message the other day (I’ve cropped out her name for the sake of privacy.)
Which she quickly amended to:
Who would have thought that I’d be seen by not only all the people who have seen the movie, but lots of people on tiktok, as well?? She said the comments are wonderful, but I don’t have the app, so I can only see one or two.
I hope you’re suitably impressed by my fame.
♦ I was moving one of these books to my side table the other day and I suddenly wondered if you were familiar with them.
These little volumes are from the Macmillan Collector’s Library. They measure about 4 x 6 inches. And they’re beautiful, with gold-tipped edges, beautiful end papers, and a satin ribbon bookmark. I’ve decided to keep one of them on that table, so that whenever I want to read something shortish, I can simply pick up the book and dive in.
The cover art is beautiful, as well.
I’m pretty sure they’re available here, but I bought mine on our trip to Europe. Lord Peter Wimsey Investigates was purchased at Shakespeare and Company in Paris – they stamped the title page with their wonderful logo. And the Sherlock Holmes was purchased in London. I’m pretty sure I bought it at John Sandoe Books. And they’re absolute gems.
♦ We had to mow the front lawn yesterday. I have named this chapter in our lives, “The Grass That Wouldn’t Stop Growing.” Still green, still lush, still a pain in the tush. Too bad that “lush” and “tush” don’t rhyme. Maybe “lush” was once pronounced with a short u as in look. It certainly would be if I was speaking in certain dialects.
And that’s it for this Friday.
♦ I want to take a minute to reach out to Brenda, who is unable to comment on the blog. I don’t know the whole story – she’ll tell it when she is able. I miss you Brenda and I miss your wonderful comments and your positive outlook on life. Just know that we’re all praying for you, my friend.
Stay safe.
Happy Friday.
Ellen D. says
I’m lucky that my son mows the lawn for me.
Hope you have a nice weekend, Claudia!
Claudia says
No sons. No daughters. Just us.
Stay safe, Ellen.
Jen says
I have husband, son, son in law and 3 grandsons but I still love cutting my own grass!! Take care, Claudia.
Claudia says
Hooray! Me, too. I’ll love it even more when we get a new lawn mower….
Stay safe, Jen.

suitably impressed here, for lots of reasons! nice of a friend to “alert” you to that good news. :)
what pretty books and souvenirs of happy travels; glad you have them. i can see framing those wonderful cover-art portraits (am partial to the one/style of sherlock holmes). off and on i try painting faces. more off than on … hence the rather unpopular idea of framing part of a bookjacket … but i keep trying! hope you do, too.
same from me to brenda, chris, deb, dee dee, dottie … you are missed. i hope all’s well and keep you and everyone else here in my prayers.
happy, safe, easy friday to everyone!
kathy
Claudia says
Chris, Deb, and Dee Dee have all left comments here recently. Maybe Dottie, too, but I’m not sure.
Stay safe, Kathy.
kathy in iowa says
oh, i must have missed their comments.
thanks for saying something. glad if they’re all okay. hopefully everyone is okay … better than okay.

Claudia says
I don’t know about Brenda – her one response indicated something had gone wrong – I suspect illness – and she said she was physically unable to respond. Let’s keep her in our prayers.
kathy in iowa says
prayers continue for brenda, you, don and everyone else!

Dee+Dee says

If I EVER get Amazon, I’ll be checking on Spoiler Alert. I keep hoping it will turn up on Hulu or Kanopy! That is just beyond cool!
Those books are drop dead beautiful. I’ve never seen those editions — they’re fantastic.
Have a wonderful weekend!
Claudia says
Aren’t they lovely?
Have a great weekend, Jeanie. Are you off to the cottage?
Stay safe.
jeanie says
I wish. No, but headed to Rick’s 50th reunion, mask in hand, fingers crossed!
Happy weekend!
Claudia says
Oh right! I forgot that the reunion was coming up. STAY SAFE, dear Jeanie.

Kay in SE WI says
Wow you ARE famous! Congrats!! I’m ashamed to admit I haven’t yet seen the movie. Haven’t figured out whether it’s streaming somewhere we subscribe. I’ll work on it.
Those are very cute books. I’m also ashamed that the last time we were in Paris (OMG, almost 9 yrs ago now!) it was at Christmastime and I went to the Christmas fair set up next to Shakespeare & Co but never set foot inside the book store. I shall correct that oversight if I’m ever lucky enough to get over there a third time.
Leaves are falling on the front lawn so there will be mulching going on with the mower this weekend.
Take care,
Kay
Claudia says
I know for sure it’s on Amazon Prime. As to other streaming services, I’m not sure.
You absolutely need to go inside Shakespeare and Co. There are words painted everywhere, little nooks and crannies, it’s absolutely charming.
Stay safe.
Dee+Dee says
How wonderful about Spoiler Alert!
Hope Brenda is okay too and that she is able to post soon.
That’s very interesting what you’re saying about the pronunciation of lush and tush. In my accent they do rhyme with each other😀
Happy Friday
Claudia says
I know they do. Also in parts of Scotland and Ireland. It’s why I love coaching dialects – there are such wonderful variations out there.
Here lush is spoken with an ‘uh’ sound and tush has a short u as in took.
Stay safe, Dee Dee.

The tiktok views are up to 645,000 and climbing! 😊
Well deserved – such a wonderful movie.

Claudia says
Whoa!
Thanks so much for letting me know about the tiktok phenomenon, Tracy!
Stay safe.
Deb says
Well that would make my day! We still have not watched the movie yet. You make a wonderful nurse. I always wish we had more lawn around our house, but I don’t miss mowing it. We use to be on 2 acres….way too much at our age. Any leaves changing yet by you? Enjoy your weekend!
Claudia says
Leaves are barely changing so far, just the maples that seem to have been impacted by the excess rain this year. They started to drop way earlier than usual.
Stay safe, Deb.
Elizabeth says
You “camera” so well! You look great!! I don’t TikTok either. I need to spend less time online, not more. Those little books are simply gorgeous and would fit quite nicely on antique bookcases. Books of yore seem to have been made smaller, with smaller type to match. I’ve not yet read any Dorothy Sayer, but I’ve read every Sherlock Holmes ever written. They’re wonderful stories. And who is that female author with the quick wit and sharp tongue? I would like to read her too. She tosses out bon mots effortlessly. Such fun! Enjoy your autumn, Claudia. You’ve certainly earned it!
Claudia says
Are you thinking of Dorothy Parker, Elizabeth?
Stay safe.
Elizabeth says
Yes! Dorothy Parker. All the little tidbits I’ve read that she wrote have been wonderful. Such wit, such intelligence, such style! I’d like more, please
Elizabeth says
P.S.: Am now on Amazon Prrime poised to click “watch now” for Spoiler Alert. Tata!
Elizabeth says
I watched Spoiler Alert, and loved it! It was like Love Story — you knew you weren’t going to like the ending because it was going to be sad, but it’s not about the ending, it’s about the journey. The cast was wonderful (Sally Field! Antoni!), from the leads, to the supporting players, to the bit parts. Both my daughter and I really liked this movie. She recognized JP right off. I thought I was going to die laughing when JP’s character had to reveal his secret to his new boyfriend. So funny! Best part? I got to hear your voice! I’ve always wondered what you sounded like, considering your vocation. You have the nicest speaking voice, well modulated, and deep, and soothing. Lucky Don. He gets to hear it every day.
Claudia says
Oh, thank you, Elizabeth! Such kind words. I’m so happy you and your daughter enjoyed it.
xoxo
Elizabeth says
We did indeed. I’m still smiling over some scenes, large and small (e.g., Sally huffing and puffing as she runs). A very pleasant way to spend a few hours. And, I noticed someone got double-billing. Good job.
Claudia says
Hurrah!
