We took a walk on the rail trail yesterday. Beautiful day, lovely weather – and I’m seeing buds on some trees. Huzzah! On the way back, we had to walk a bit further than usual and noticed this at the other entrance to the trail:
An adorable Little Free Library made in the shape of a railroad car. This is the rail trail and there used to be a railroad station in our little town – right on this site – as well as a big hotel for travelers. Hard for those of us who are newish to this area to imagine, but I’ve heard lots of stories about it from those who were born and raised here.
I have a few books that I was going to donate to the library, but I just may drop them off here.
Today is going to be warmer. Still too early to do any work outside, but we may sit on the glider for a spell. We’re going to Rick and Doug’s for brunch first.
Today’s egg cup theme: Dog egg cups.
Enjoy your day – I hope the weather is getting warmer wherever you live and that signs of spring are finally appearing. It was a long, long winter.
Happy Sunday.

We have several Little Free Libraries scattered around town. They are among the recipients of books that have been donated to the public library that for some reason we canβt sell there.
Claudia says
I’m gathering some that I’ll add to the Free Library.

Claudia, what an adorable free library! We have many scattered around our little town. My favorite ones look like the houses they are placed in front of. My town has the most period houses per capita (unfortunately, I don’t live in one) so the little libraries can be quite detailed. Another favorite has a rooftop of live succulents.
Spring is almost sprung here. One day the Japanese maple’s leaves started to unfurl and the next day it was fully leafed out. The California redbud leaves are unfurled too, but they have a ways to go before they get to full size. Enjoy your brunch and sit on the glider!

Forgot to mention that I love the thematic presentation of your egg cups.
Claudia says
Thank you, Wendy!
Claudia says
Love the idea of a rooftop of live succulents!
Enjoy your newly leafed-out trees, Wendy!
Linda @ A La Carte says
That is the cutest little free library. I have seen a few around my town also. I think they are wonderful. Enjoy your day.
Claudia says
Such a wonderful idea!

I love little free libraries — I’d love to have one sometime. And yes, I take books there!
The egg cups are darling! Can’t wait to see more!
Claudia says
I’d have a Free Library, but we live on a very busy county road with no sidewalks. No one would be able to stop to get a book!

We had a “Little Free Library” two years ago near the lake, but last year it wasn’t there. Maybe it will be there this year, we’ll see. Yours is much more creatively conceived, I think. Someone mentioned that they often resemble the buildings near them. I wonder if this is a common theme among “Little Free Library” builders? Come to think of it, ours was sort of a plain red gabled one, across the street from a rather plain red barn. Hmmmm.
Love the egg cups!
Claudia says
Most of the free libraries I’ve seen are themed to the neighborhood, or the town. The one that I saw in Florida was decorated quite beautifully with fish and shells and all things beachy.

Our railroad left many years ago. It is missed and collecting stories from your lost railroad should be most interesting.
That is a fine railroad car small library. We could use one here.
Claudia says
It took me a minute to notice the wheels and that’s when I realized it was a train car, Mary.
Chris K in Wisconsin says
We have several in our little town, too. They are wonderful! Sharing books to read is fantastic.
It was lovely here this morning, but we have some rain showers now. Supposed to be 70* tomorrow. Windows will be opened! Then a chance of rain, snow & freezing rain on Wed & Thurs. Ahhh, spring.
Claudia says
74 here today (Monday) and it rained all last night. Strange weather – it’s been all over the place in the past week!

The Little Free Library reminded me somehow that I got two Bobbsey Twins books this week at Goodwill – 1938 and 1942. They are different shades of green and thicker than the blue? ones I got years later. They will look good on their sides with Xmas things on top.
Today was our 13th Annual Edible Books Festival, which are held all over the country. People are SO clever in taking titles and turning them into cakes, bread, cookies. We are handed papers with the titles and we try to match them with the numbered cakes. I got ten right – more than I expected !

The Edible Books Festival sounds wonderful, Connie!

We have a couple of Little Library stands in our small town and they’re always such a delight to see when driving by them. One even has a bench for someone to sit on. It’s a wonderful tradition.
Claudia says
The addition of a bench is a terrific idea!

Claudia says
Me too!

I read this post and the one tomorrow just now. And you wrote about your trails! Just what I was hoping for! Thank you. I love the Little Library. I think about “Fahrenheit 451”. Is that the right name? But the scene of the old lady (who is now most likely younger than I am now!)sitting in her house and they were going to burn the place down because of all her books and she wouldn’t leave. I am so glad things haven’t gone that far here. Oh, and the scene from the “Book Thief” where the Nazis were burning the books, and that really happened. Books are part of freedom and I love that we can have big libraries and “little” libraries. One of the things that I am grateful for today.
Claudia says
I know. Those stories are so, so powerful, and what is particularly ominous is that we have an administration that almost disdains reading and knowledge.
Very grateful for our libraries!
