Little House in the Den

August 6, 2009 at 6:37 pm by Claudia

It’s still here – my dollhouse. It’s sitting in a corner of the den. I won’t have any time to do anything with it until fall. But I look at it every day, while I sit in my chair and blog or watch TV. It needs a lot of work because its rather the worse for wear. The shingles need replacing, the outside needs a fresh coat of paint, I want to replace the shutters, and whoever assembled the house didn’t do such a wonderful job with the upstairs windows…they are crooked. And the inside is totally unfinished. Despite its flaws, I love it. Or maybe because of its flaws, I love it. Mockingbird Hill Cottage has a lot of irregularities. After all, it was built in 1891. Some of the windows here are slightly crooked, too.

Oh, and the front door won’t stay shut. I have no idea how to do anything. I’m reading a lot about dollhouses and everything to do with them. My blogging friends who are miniaturists inspire me every day. So when the days cool off and I start to spend more time indoors, I will be getting to work on this sweet, imperfect dollhouse.

    I don’t know, Claudia.
It looks like a huge job!
Maybe you just ought to give it to me!

    OK then not.
I am looking for one, but don’t tell anyone.

I think Fall is exactly the right time to get cozy with your little doll house. Sounds like a lot of fun, Claudia!

It’s a darling house, Claudia. You can easily replace the door. You can remove the dormer windows too and fix the hole they’re in so that they’ll be straight. It’s great it’s not finished inside as that will make it easier to electrify. I have this booklet called everything you need to know about dollhouses or something along those lines (I hope I still have it). Email me your address and I’ll send it to you. It helped me a lot when I first got into miniatures. Hugs, Marsha

Oh, Claudia, it is a darling little house and with some TLC it will be the house of your dreams!

If you haven’t yet, you might want to look up the Greenleaf forum at http://www.greenleafdollhouses.com/forum/index.php? There are many helpful people there with all kinds of ideas to help you and you may want to look in the gallery . . . my houses are there (I’m known as MiniMadWoman) with an album of my Pennethorne Manor renovation and rehab.

In no time at all you’ll have your house taken down to the studs and built back up again! LOL!!

My best advice? The fun is in the journey . . . not the destination!

I’m looking forward to your progress!

    Take care,
    Teresa the MiniMadWoman

Claudia, no worries, you’ll make it fabulous! The cold weather months are perfect for bigger projects. Little by lttle, a change here, some paint there, and next thing you know, it will be ready for it’s springtime debut! I can’t wait to see it all finished.

What FUN you are going to have come fall!! I’ll have to post photos of the dollhouse that “Santa” put together for Amanda when she was six. It’s not nearly as big as yours, but it took FOREVER to assemble. So I can only imagine how many man/woman-hours went into putting yours together! … Donna

I love your little house! I would be staring at it all the time too. Try not to get overwhelmed with all of the things you want to do with it. I found that by just doing one thing I was propelled into a wonderful world of creativity. Right now I have about 10 projects in process! Anytime I have to spend working on them is time I enjoy. Miniatures bring out your dreams and take you back to the simplicity of childhood.
I’m sure you will love every minute!

What a beautiful dollhouse you have- I think that some of the flaws add character :) I think the best thing about the dollhouse is that it takes time to complete. The joy and fascination with it never stops and the time it takes makes is so much more special. You will have so much fun!

You took me for a stroll down memory lane with this post, Claudia! I’m thinking of my blue dolls house I had to get rid of some months ago… Hope I will be able to replace it with a new one, sooner or later!
By the way… love yours! Enjoy it!!!

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
