Maggie seemed wistful yesterday.
She stayed by the window for the longest time.
She didn’t want to talk, she just wanted to look out the window.
I finally realized she was looking at something. I peered out.
Ah. That explains it.
She wants to go outside and play. Who can blame her?
Maggie has a new friend.
Casey, this is for you. I used my old camera (which has a telephoto lens) to capture these two. Mr. and Mrs. Groundhog.
Usually, I only see one. But as I was focusing, another one popped out from behind the climbing hydrangea. They run there when they hear a noise or are alarmed.
I’m going to call them Frick and Frack.
It has rained so much here and it’s so humid that the windows are permanently steamed up. I feel like I’m living in some sort of tropical greenhouse. The other day it rained over 5 inches in two hours. There are flood warnings. The ground is saturated.
I’m sick of it, frankly. And it’s going to continue through Friday. My hydrangeas have drooped down to the ground. Will they ever stand upright again? My poor babies, they just bloomed. Please, Mother Nature, give us a break.
All of this is especially sad when I see what is going on out West and how desperately water is needed there. I wish I could wave a magic wand and send this rain where it is most lacking. Such extremes everywhere! I can’t even begin to take in the tragic deaths of 19 heroic firefighters. Once again, we are faced with a loss that is incomprehensible.
At some point in the last several days, it was dry enough for me to take a picture or two of the garden. Another daylily is blooming.
Happy Tuesday.
Enjoy your rain, we are having a stretch of over 100 degree days, I am spending lots of time at a friends pool!!!! And eating lots of frozen yogurt at the store I work part time!!!
Stay cool!
That opening photo is just darling! Reminds me of Pinocchio, ‘I wish I was a real boy.’ (but in this case…) Now that Bridger is no longer with us, our bunnies are becoming bolder. Good thing our vegetable garden is fenced in! (But even when I would let Bridger out and knew he’d chase after bunnies, I always yelled at them to give them a head start. :-)
I do the same thing!
I’m living through the same weather and it does get tiring. The weeds seem to thrive on it and I can’t get out to clear them away, so my plans for magnificent gardens is thwarted once again.
I love the second picture…really looks like she’s longing to play outside. We are dealing with the same type of weather.I am sooooo done with the rain! Come on Mr Sun, go to work!
Blessings and sunshine, Joanne
Please come, Mr. Sun!
Your pictures made me nostalgic. When we lived in NY we had a family of groundhogs that lived next door. My kids loved them, and used to leave lettuce, carrots, and celery tops around the bushes to entice them out for lunch. The ‘kids’ are all grown now, but I’m going to show them your blog…I know they’ll love seeing some old friends!
They are so sweet. And very timid.
I love her little sweater, so adorable on her. This year we have bunnies everywhere! Even out at the horse arena, there’s presents left by the little ones! My dogs don’t even alert to them now, they are so used to see them bounding all over the property! I’d gladly trade you 2 hrs of rain for a day of our heat. It’s been pretty awful out here. I live in fire country, too, and the loss of these amazing men is unfathomable. They give so much to protect our property and lives, and of course these men gave the ultimate.
I know you all have been dealing with really high temps. The loss of the firefighters is heartbreaking.
We have been having torrential rains – downpours like this are unusual for us – usually it is a driving rain or a steady rain or a misting rain, but these straight down, make water shoot out of the downspout showers are crazy!
What are those animals (I know the bunny, but the others)?
They are groundhogs, Paula. Or woodchucks. Same thing.
Love the all the photos, but really love the bunnie and woodchuck/ground hog!!
I hope it’s ok that I sent you an email.
I really love my critters.
Tropical garden conditions here as well…and lots of serious flooding around us and in the garden…thankfully we are spared right now. Nature is sure fickle or fed up…I think she is trying to give us some hard lessons and we appear not to listen still…love the new critters that have popped up!
I think she is also trying to give us some lessons and unfortunately, many people aren’t listening!
The loss of the Firefighters is heartbreaking indeed..They are so brave to do what they do..Who can blame Miss Maggie for wanting to run and play with the other bunnies..what joyful little creatures they are..I usually spy our groundhog neighbors down by the stream that runs through our property..they are always nibbling away and not bothering a soul..My Daylillies are blooming beautifully too..I swear there has to be hundreds in that patch..Looks like rain again here also Claudia..Wishing us both a little sunshine..
I long for sunshine, Nancy! And no storms.
Claudia, thanks so much for the groundhog photos. I love having wild creatures come into the yard. I have ground squirrels, lizards and lots of different birds… I feel that we took away their wild place, so we should do everything that we can to keep them going…My squirrels are still totally wild, but they know where to come for fresh apples, lettuce and peanuts every day. Extremely spoiled.
I agree with you, Casey. We have encroached on their territory – we’re all sharing here and I’m happy to share with them.
Frick and Frack … I love it.
I know what you mean about the rain.
We’ve had our fair share of grasshoppers and dry days… the extremes are all over the place in different zones.
I’d gladly take some of the rain.
As to the loss of the firefighters…it is hard to understand. Same with the loss of life (first responders in the West,TX explosion…) It is times like these when I just hold on and trust God. I cannot even attain His Wisdom, it is too infinite for me. ~ Pat
I’m sure you would love some of this rain, Pat, and if I could give it to you, I would!
The explosion in West, TX was a great, great tragedy.
Here in the southern half of the “garden” state we’ve had so much rain that the vegetable plants are rotting in the farmers’ fields. Along with the rising water in the creeks and streams the produce prices will most likely rise too.
You bet they will, Denise!
I love the bunnies, Frick and Frack…are they raising a family? There has been too much of everything…too much heat, too much rain…too much death. I am seeking some sort of normal…I’m craving it. You know, a week of perfect weather, no natural disasters, life as we used to know it. Seems like we have a new normal…going from one crisis to another, and I don’t like it much.
I don’t either, Donna. I would love to have a quiet, sunny week free from weather worries, tragedies and anything else that is negative.
As for the family, I haven’t seen any babies – babies usually appear in May, so maybe they’ve already come and gone?
Yeah, they probably have…we’ve got some toddler bunnies running around here…they are older than babies, but not adults. I just got back from visiting my mom in a nursing home. She was remarking, quite a few times, how lucky she was that her stroke wasn’t as bad as it could have been. She has been there for almost 6 years, and is partially paralyzed, yet, she considers herself lucky. So on that note, I’m gonna pull me some weeds on this glorious 74 degree day, with no rain, and thank my lucky stars that I still can! ;)
Oh, would I have been beyond excited to get a photo of those two creatures! We could use some rain here too. We had some for about a week. Now dried up again. Seems to be daylilies season. And that too will be over soon.
Brenda
Yikes, Brenda! It’s only the first of July! We have quite a bit of summer left, don’t we?
Ah, so sweet, Claudia. We have been deluged with rain, too.
Too much rain, my friend!
Not a drop here but it’s TROPICAL…UGLY..
Hi Claudia!
Sorry I’ve been an infrequent visitor of late – hubby is off for summer break and we’ve been trying to tackle some more of the boxes from my parents house, and have some fun too. I do read your posts every day, wouldn’t miss them. I loved your one a couple of days ago about books … I must read some Gladys Taber! … and yesterdays about the fortune teller. I was immediately catapulted back in time to grade school. What was the yarn thing we used to play? Cat’s Cradle or something?
I’m hoping to catch a production of “Midsummer Nights Dream” at The Actors Gang this summer (I think maybe your husbands resume said he was in a play there??? I’ve only seen three plays there but each one has been fantastic.) There are at least four different companies doing it around town this summer – there’s even one with puppets.
Poor Maggie does look pensive. Gloomy days here too but thankfully no rain. Wishing you all sunshiney days to play outside in.
Gosh, names out of the past – I can remember my mom talking about Frick and Frack – they were comedians, weren’t they? When do I think they did funny things on ice skates?
I’ve never seen a ground hog before, so much fun! Thank you for sharing them with us.
Happy 4th to you and Scout!
