This time of year, the little strip of our property that borders the culvert and the road is full of wildflowers. And it’s not just on our property, but everywhere in these parts. I really love seeing the purple, lavender, and bright yellow flowers. It’s like having another garden bed without all the work.
Am I crazy or is there a subtle change in the light already? I thought so yesterday and then I said to myself, “Claudia, you’re imagining this because it’s September 1st.”
I noticed it on our trail walk yesterday. And I see it again today.
Speaking of light, I grabbed my phone and captured this little bit of morning light:
A little Preston Sturges is always good for the soul and we watched one of his best, The Lady Eve, last night on TCM. Just what the doctor ordered. I would have watched Sullivan’s Travels as well, but I was too tired. I love, love Barbara Stanwyck, especially in screwball comedies where she’s smart and sassy and sexy.
I turned to Don in the middle of the movie and said “Barbara Stanwyck is so sexy.”
His response: “Oh, yeah.”
Next up in our Inspector Morse viewing – the final episode, which I’m dreading. That means we’re done, for one, but I’m also well aware that it’s going to be very, very sad.
What else? Shanna has finished the portrait of our first dog, Winston, and it’s on the way here. Here’s hoping it arrives at our post office box today.
I’m reading A Great Reckoning and taking my time with it because I know I’ll have to wait another year for a new Louise Penny. I’ve also got to fit in a book slated for review on September 12th. And a few more to be reviewed in October. Along with everything else in my TBR pile!
Nothing all that exciting, my friends, but we’re content.
Happy Friday.

Hi Claudia,
There’s not only a subtle change in the light but in the air. I had a moment of sadness this morning when I noticed the change – not that I’ll miss the humidity. I love autumn but there is always something about the change in seasons that sparks a touch of melancholy in me.
Speaking of change, has the size of the print on your blog changed? For the last week or so, it seems like a smaller print, or is it just my computer.
Have a lovely weekend!
Claudia says
Makes me melancholy, as well.
No the size of the print hasn’t changed. Must be your computer, Mary.
Shanna says
I feel a change in the light, as well. I always get a little twinge of sadness this time of year.
One of the first impressions I had of our lake house in NY was that even the “weeds” were beautiful. The way that the wildflowers change with the seasons is spectacular around here! I love our travels into town on winding country roads, be it daisy season, daylily season, Queen Anne’s Lace season…whatever. Beautiful weeds!
Claudia says
I do too. Seasonal changes – mostly fall and winter – leave me feeling sad and a bit melancholy.
I love all the wildflowers this time of year – it’s as if Nature is giving us a spectacular display as the perennials wind down.
Shanna says
Are the yellow flowers Scotch Broom?
Claudia says
No, they’re Goldenrod, Shanna.
Linda @ A La Carte says
I felt a change in the air yesterday but by afternoon it was back to hot hot hot! Today it’s cloudy I guess from the Hurricane charging up the coastline. It’s cooler so that’s a good thing. I’ve got a huge pork roast in the crockpot to make BBQ. I’m making dinner for our Pastor’s family (they just had a new baby) and I will feed Mom, Sara and the family also. I finished reading ‘On The Corner of Bitter and Sweet’ and loved it. I’m well on my way to my goal of 100 books read this year. Enjoy your day.
hugs!!
Claudia says
What an admirable goal, Linda! Good for you! How nice of you to make a meal for your Pastor’s family and your family. You’re a good person, my friend.
Julie says
The light has definitely changed. I noticed it a couple of weeks ago. I will definitely miss summer – it seems like it just started.
I love watching 1940’s movies and I love Barbara Stanwyck. We watch “Christmas in Connecticut” along with “The Man Who Came To Dinner” as part of our Christmas entertainment each year. People don’t know what they are missing by only watching current day movies.
Have a wonderful Labor Day weekend.
Claudia says
I love both those movies, as well. I am a huge fan of old movies, Julie!
Cindy says
I watched that last episode of Morse. BooHoo. Especially, if you are invested in the character (man). You begin to think that he is real. We started watching again last week and are now on season1, episode 4. It’s interesting that the rhythm of 20+ year old dramas is quite different than today’s programs. Takes a little time to get in the swing of it. Your accidental flowers are beautiful. It’s is still hot as holy heck here in the gulf coast of Texas.
Claudia says
We are invested in him and we love John Thaw as Morse. Wonderful, wonderful actor. I’m girding my loins because I know I’ll be crying.
Wendy T says
I love the Wildflowers near your property. There aren’t any in my neighborhood…it’s manicured to within the edge of its life… I noticed the light this morning….it’s the first morning in many that there weren’t cloudy skies, so the sun was streaming in, but making my eyes squint. The sun is lower in the sky and will continue to get lower as we near autumn. I was out pruning yesterday. My Jasmine leaves are already turning color. So soon???
Claudia says
So soon? No!
Vera says
The wildflowers are gorgeous. We have goldenrod and I was nervous because as a kid that was one of the things that gave me severe hay fever…but so far so good! Definitely a change in the light and air. I noticed it a few weeks ago (but I am up so early during the week – 5:30 a.m., it’s not surprising). When I come downstairs in the morning I have to turn on a light instead of opening shades/curtains, etc. It is DARK outside when I get up. But I love it (I know I’m in the minority). Fall is my absolute most favorite season – especially September and October.
Claudia says
I’ve heard that goldenrod is non-allergy causing and that goldenrod and ragweed are often mistaken for each other. I’m allergic to ragweed but not goldenrod. It was still a little dark outside when I got up this morning, too.
Barbara W. says
I love the autumn! I find spring and autumn positively invigorating, partly because the summers and winters here are so harsh. This weekend we’ll be doing the whole “back to school” thing, even though the student is 23 this month. (Some things never change.) Mid-September is when the miniature show and sale is held in the neighbouring city, so that’s definitely something positive to mark in the calendar.
Claudia says
That will be fun! I envy you that, Barbara. Wish I had a show nearer to me than several hours away!
Mary says
I think Barbara Stanwyck can be describes as ” smoldering”…awesome in Double Indemnity. Finally turned off AC and open all the windows. I am now waiting for the dust bunnies to roll out from under the beds, hahah. I will then dry mop them up and out the window…..
Claudia says
She’s amazing in Double Indemnity.
I have the windows open, too. It’s so nice!
Chris K in Wisconsin says
Oh, the light has most definitely changed. I’m not sure if it goes lower or higher at this time of year, but the slant and the shadows are totally different than just several weeks ago. I love Fall. I seem to have a bit more of a calm come over me in the Fall. Summer simply makes me happy. I think I need the calm of Fall to prepare for what follows….my least favorite time of the year. I am ready to dump a few hanging baskets that are quite done, and plant a few mums. My mums that are in the garden are in bloom as well. Changes are everywhere.
Hope you have a good Friday! I finished the 2nd Louise Penny yesterday, and #3 was waiting at the library for me to pick up!! Good reading ahead!
Claudia says
My baskets are still hanging in there, but that’s because I specifically buy a plant that lasts until October. And the impatiens seem to hang in there, as well.
Donnamae says
Your wild flowers are gorgeous…love how they dress up the roadside. Yes…I’ve noticed the changing light here too…guess it’s inevitable. It was a superb day by my standards yesterday….low 70’s! Humidity to return next week…oh joy. I didn’t realize there was even an original Inspector Morse. I only knew about the younger version…Endeavor…it shows a young inspector Morse…and I quite enjoy it. Have you seen the new one….curious if you have, and your opinion. I think I’ll have to catch the original myself. Enjoy your day! ;)
Claudia says
You must watch the original series! John Thaw, as Morse, is incredible. What an amazingly talented actor. That’s what came first – that series. Then Lewis followed and then the new Endeavor series about the young Morse. Yes. We’ve seen Endeavor and Lewis and we like them both very much!
Donnamae says
Ok I will…I’ll add it to my new list. A TBW (to be watched) list from you! ;)
Claudia says

Here is an article about goldenrod that might be of interest to some of your readers, Claudia.
http://www.mnn.com/health/allergies/stories/dear-allergy-sufferers-dont-blame-goldenrod
It looks like I’m going to have to start reading Louise Penny……
Have you watched Inspector Lewis? There is speculation that another show will evolve around HIS sidekick, James Hathaway. Did you see the final episode? There was some fantastic cinematography. I won’t be any more specific, because, spoiler.
Are you planning to show Don around Oxford’s dreaming spires? I hope so; then we’ll get to enjoy your photography. Plus, I think he would love it. xo
Claudia says
I know there always seems to be confusion about goldenrod and ragweed. I’m allergic to ragweed. For some reason, people have become confused about the two.
We have watched Lewis although I was angry with PBS for scheduling the last episodes during the Olympics which I think was a boneheaded move, so no, we didn’t see the final episodes. We will eventually.
I’ve been to Oxford before, and I plan on visiting there as well as Stratford-on-Avon. I mean, we have to!
Doris says
Good afternoon Claudia, It is getting darker earlier now. I like sitting outside after dinner and I noticed last night that I was going in earlier . It changes my routine and I don’t like it! I guess we will get use to it.
Claudia says
I never like losing daylight, Doris. It affects my mood!
Susan says
Oh Claudia, the light is changing and the air is changing and autumn is on the cusp. I seldom notice the change in the light and air until after I feel the grip of melancholy in my soul. I lost a dear childhood friend in the fall of 75 followed by the loss of my father in the fall of 76, when I was but 16 years old. Ever since, the change from summer to fall happens more in my soul than in my surroundings. And though I am gripped with sadness for a spell, I do love the fall. I love leaves floating down, the cooler mornings and evenings, and of course, the changes in light and air. The shadows fall so differently in autumn and for me are comforting. And then there is the excitement of football and bonfires, candy corn and pumpkins, less mowing and more enjoying of the yard and the end of the blooming season. To everything, there is a season.
Enjoy!
Susan
Claudia says
I can understand why fall brings sadness to you, Susan. It always makes me melancholy and this October will be the first anniversary of my dad’s death. So I understand.
Janet in Rochester says
In my experience, those “not-all-that-exciting” days turn out to be the ones we look back on most fondly of all. Hope Winston’s picture is waiting at the post office, and have a great, not-all-that-exciting weekend too! 😎
Claudia says
I’m all for not-very-exciting, Janet!
Connie says
Claudia, have you watched Transparent? I’m on the second season, and I really like it!
Claudia says
No, I haven’t watched it yet. I believe it’s on Amazon? Am I right? We don’t have that.
Nancy Blue Moon says
I think goldenrod is pretty..I like your morning picture too..
Claudia says
I love goldenrod, Nancy!
Betsy says
Beautiful flowers and I think you’re right about the change in light. I can’t believe how early it’s getting dark already. I can imagine how excited you are to receive your painting of Winston. It will complete your wall perfectly.
Blessings,
Betsy
Claudia says
It’s here and it’s beautiful, Betsy!
