Melting

March 9, 2026 at 8:57 am by Claudia

It’s been warm the last couple of days and it will be even warmer today and tomorrow.

Proof:

For the first time since early December, we have almost no snow on the ground. It’s hard to believe! Even the huge piles of snow left from shoveling and plowing are almost gone. There was so much snow that it seemed as if it would never melt. Could  never melt. Today and tomorrow ought to finish it off.

We don’t kid ourselves, there are a couple of days coming next week where the high reaches only 30 degrees. But we can put up with that, knowing that spring is on the way.

The back forty takes a bit longer, as it’s a higher elevation. But I’m sure the snow will be gone by today.

I’ve been reading Practical Magic  and loving it. The next book in the lineup is There are Rivers in the Sky  by Elif Shafak, which I’m hoping will be as beautiful as the description indicates. I’m crocheting and the afghan is slowly getting bigger. I’m not even letting myself dream of gardening yet. That won’t happen for a while. But I am wondering if our local nursery has reopened yet. I know it will open sometime this month.

I’m thinking of starting my morning glory seeds inside so they start growing earlier than usual. I would then transplant them around the end of April. If that doesn’t work and they still don’t bloom until October, I’ll officially give up.

Stay safe.

Happy Monday.

i’m happy for you to have signs of spring now, especially after the winter you’ve endured, and because you love gardening. i hope you let yourself now dream about it.

would like some more snow yet this month, but that’s not likely. it’s definitely spring here … been seeing robins for a month now, snow piles are long gone. it will come around again someday. :)

    happy, safe monday!

Robins have yet to make an appearance here. When the peepers arrive, as well as the robins, I’ll know it is spring.

      Stay safe, Kathy.

Ugh. This winter has been craaazy! We finally have some warm weather after at least three months of fireplace and window heater use… in Florida! All plants except most of the trees have died. What!?

We have a slew of March birthdays in this family and I’ve always thought of those as springtime birthdays, but…Oh well. At least no hurricanes last season, but stay tuned.

Thanks for the heads up about Practical Magic. I’ve been needing a new series. Have you read or do you plan to read the three others in that series?

      Crazy weather everywhere, Shanna!

I haven’t read any of the other books in the series. I’m about 3/4 of the way through Practical Magic and love it.

      Stay safe, Shanna.

I’m glad to see the melt! And I bet you are even more so! I like the idea of starting the morning glories. What can it hurt?

I am glad to see your snow is almost melted…..Spring is coming, it’s just taking awhile. Supposed to hit upper 60’s today….then cool down here too. We have buds on our silver maple….so I have definite hope.

Never tried growing morning glories…they sound temperamental. Pretty though. Good luck with them this year. Enjoy your day! ;)

They aren’t temperamental, they used to bloom beautifully here until the climate changed. And in San Diego, they covered every inch of our fence.

      Thanks, Donnamae.

Wow, what a difference a few days make! I’m glad you do t have to contend with shoveling snow. When does snow season end?

We’re going through a very warmer period but I haven’t put away winter clothes yet. One never knows when Mother Mature changes her mind.

We never know when the snow season ends. We’ll most likely see snow showers when it gets cooler, but they’re really nothing. Every spring is different. We’ve had big snowfalls in April.

      Stay safe, Wendy.

dear Claudia/Don — glad for your warmer temps — snow melt looks encouraging — our snow is gone as well — but not bragging too soon — forecast is saying colder/snow flurries for the weekend — UGH — so over it — lets keep the sun shining for just a little longer!! Heard a robin singing this AM — hope it is a good omen — also saw a red winged blackbird yesterday which around these parts, is supposed to be a true sign of spring — am ready for my favorite time of year. hope this will be a good week for you all. stay safe/healthy

I can’t wait until I see a robin. It will probably be at least a couple of weeks until we do.

      Stay safe, Linda.

Thank goodness that the snow is almost gone! I absolutely loved There are Rivers in the Sky, it’s a wonderful book written across three different timescales. I remember my geography teacher telling us many, many years ago that all the water on the earth never disappears but it does take different forms and transport to different places across the globe.

    Happy Monday

It’s lovely that most of the snow has melted. Ours is pretty well gone, too. We even see little green spikes in our rhubarb patch. Enjoy the warmer weather. Hugs, Elaine

Claudia, I have just finished Theo of Golden, I thought it was the most beautifully written book and a captivating story. Have you read it yet?

Good Morning Claudia! We are melting here too, at Last! but my back yard is still a foot deep in snow pack. But right next to the house foundation on the south protected side I planted some snowdrops years ago and they are up, not open yet but showing their pointed little heads! It feels so good to see the snow diminish! I tried to plant morning glories indoors years ago and found they did not transplant well. The key is soil temperature…. until it is warm enough (the soil outside) they don’t grow much even if you have started them ahead, and the transplanting always sets them back as they have to adjust. But don’t take my word for it… you will probably have a different experience with more southern temps than I have. I have also had morning glories self seed which completely surprised me! But they were the darker colored variety… not the beautiful sky blue ones that take a good 90 days from sprouting til blooming. I sat in my garden yesterday… had to climb over snow drifts to get to the chairs…. but it was heavenly! Aaah Spring is here!

      Oh, lovely snowdrops!

The other idea I had about morning glories is to plant them in a pot and put the pot in the garden bed. I think they’ll take off faster.

      Stay safe, Betsy.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
