Mental Health Days

October 6, 2025 at 9:08 am by Claudia

We stood on the back edge of our property on Saturday evening and gazed at this beauty. This is our neighbor’s property. I took a video of the entire expanse. It’s on my main IG account if you want to see it. Here’s the link.

Saturday was a mental health day for me – I didn’t look at the news at all. Unfortunately, I did look at the news yesterday and all my calm disappeared. So today? You guessed it. No news. Saturday, I mowed the back forty. Or was that Friday? It’s all a blur.

I took this picture of Holly on Saturday. She’s wearing her hydrangea hat while standing under the limelight hydrangea. I usually take porch pictures of the girls in the morning because the light is the best then. This, however, was in the afternoon and the shadows were incredible! Holly-Hydrangea.

The other day, I moved the Beacon Hill from the long work table to the smaller sewing table. Surprisingly, it fit. I was tired of it completely blocking the light from the windows. I always felt like I was in a dark cubby hole when I was sitting at the desk. With that space freed up, I decided to try wallpapering that roombox I use for the girls (formerly the Lori Loft from Target.) I found some wallpaper in my stash that I thought would work. And then I painted the remaining walls. This being one of my ‘spontaneous’ projects, I foolishly didn’t use primer first so I had to apply several coats of paint. But I told myself this wasn’t a big dollhouse renovation that I wanted to look perfect. It’s a box I use for some photos. That’s it. So I’m okay with it.

Anyway, here it is what I have so far.

I covered a window in that back wall so I could have more surface space for the wallpaper.

Harper and Gilly seem confused. “Why are we here?”

Of course, none of the 1:6 furniture that I purchased matches this wallpaper. I currently have a navy blue sofa and a red chair. So, I’m toying with using some foam core or poster board to ‘construct’ another back wall that I can fit over this one when I want to use the furniture. I will source different – maybe vintage – wallpaper.

As I have said before, the dolls and various little projects are keeping me on the right side of sane. I’m not sure what I’d do without them.

We watched Rear Window  last night – one of my favorite movies ever. I’m sure I’ve seen it at least 30 times, but last night I saw details I’d never seen before. It’s a perfect movie. And any movie with Thelma Ritter in the cast can only be wonderful.

Stay safe.

Happy Monday.

That’s a very serene view you have…very calming. I would keep a couple of chairs there, and visit often.

It’s been difficult to stay away from the news and social media, as I do like to stay informed. But, I’ve come to the conclusion that my sanity is more important than my need for information. So, I’ve been immersing myself in old photo albums that my parents had of their trips. There’s quite a few in our rec room that need sorting. So, that’s exactly what I’ve been doing, as I have put off this project for the last 8 years. Plus, I’m getting a collection together to go to the thrift or consignment stores. Not quite Swedish Death cleaning….but close. Anything to keep me occupied and not dwelling on our present national circumstances.

May we all find a little peace and joy anyway we can! ;)

We have a bench up there just for that purpose.

Any kind of project will do – whatever works for you and keeps your mind calm, Donnamae.

      Stay safe.

Beautiful view. I’ve been taking a mental health week as much as possible. Reading, watching a movie or two and working in my craft room. We must all do what we can. My family is working on getting passports (I already have mine) so we can make a trip to see my daughter in Canada next year. It is not safe for them to return to the US. If that isn’t the saddest thing I’ve said in a long time, my American born daughter and her wife are afraid of this country. I am aging and the fact that this trip might be one of my last big ones breaks my heart. OK enough of my troubles. I am blessed that they are safe in Canada for now.

It’s appalling. How awful for them and for you, Linda. I have to believe things will change before the end of the year. Prayers are with you.

      Stay safe.

It’s good to have distractions to calm ourselves. Each day it gets worse and I hope they are stopped from doing more damage soon. I’m shocked how they have done so much harm so quickly.
    Stay safe.

      They are evil people.

I’d like to see them all go to prison – the sooner, the better.

      Thanks so much, Ellen.

probably 99% the rooms i’m loving most in (online) house tours lately have wallpaper. and i think you chose a beauty! i do think it could handle a navy blue sofa and red chair. anyway, more good work, claudia!

and i’m glad your efforts to move the big bishop hill paid off with more sunlight and a good feeling.

glad you are taking a break, taking it easy … and seeing that beautiful view (wow)! good to do anyway and especially when there is so much unnecessary pain in the world due to lawlessness, greed and cruelty.

doing the same here today … only necessary chores, “the waltons” and a lot more knitting than usual … absolutely no paper-sorting or the like. yesterday my brother, sister and i went to nebraska for a cousin’s service. was good to go and spend time with much-loved relatives, and tough for missing those not there to see, hear and hug.

take good care. hope you, don and everyone else have a good day and stay safe.

No, it doesn’t support the red and the dark blue. I tried it. I know the service for your cousin must have been hard, but it’s good that you and your siblings went to it.

      Stay safe, Kathy.

My mental health day this week was going with my son to see The Sound of Music at the cinema – the first time I can remember seeing it on the big screen . I had forgotten how good Christopher Plummer was in it . And of course Julie Andrews ( but I still think the Nuns my favourite).
There have been evil times before . Good won . I have to believe that will be the case this time

I saw it on the big screen when it first came out. So glad you had a chance to see it that way. Christopher Plummer was excellent. One of my favorite actors.

          Stay safe, Siobhan.

I’ve been cutting back on news too. Only print, for one thing. And less of it. I love the idea of a portable wall for the room box. More flexibility, although I do love that paper you chose and the windows of the box give it a nice mix. And must be fun having more light in the room!

I like your first photo. Mental health days are healthy.
Creative, artistic people like you (me) can’t handle all the stresses of the world. I understand why my grandma never watched the news.
I’m at a lodge amongst the forest hills. I was looking at the lake when a fox passed by right behind me. I listened to Neil Young’s harvest moon.

My birthday gifts were a large piece of freshly baked saskatoon pie and chocolate bars brought to my room later.
I think I might stay another night. I need the rest, the breeze through the trees and the lake.
I’ll bet you enjoyed rear window. I’d watch it again too.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
