Midweek

September 24, 2025 at 8:19 am by Claudia

It’s not sunny today because it’s raining. That is exciting news for our drought-stricken area. It rained overnight and we’ll have a few more showers today with thunderstorms tomorrow.

We are now vaccinated for the flu and Covid. The druggist who gave us the shots was very nice, but they hurt! He didn’t have the lightest touch. Our arms are sore and Don, as expected, had a much stronger reaction than I did. He felt achey, not unlike flu symptoms, and was generally miserable yesterday. I didn’t have any reaction other than to wake up way too early yesterday morning, which is probably completely unrelated to the shots. So I felt very sleep deprived, but Don felt truly miserable. He’s much better today. Glad that’s done with!

Since one of our favorite things to do is walk up and down the aisles of a drugstore together (I know…it’s wierd) we did just that after we got our shots. By the way, there’s an episode of King of Queens  where they go to the drugstore on a Saturday night just to walk up and down the aisles because that’s their favorite thing to do.

Then we drove across the street to the grocery store and picked up a few things. Then…we got old-fashioned donuts at Dunkin Donuts. That was our little Monday morning date. Shots, Walgreen’s, the grocery store, and donuts. It doesn’t take much to make us happy.

I returned Katabasis  to the library yesterday and am now reading The Hallmarked Man. Katabasis  was wonderful. Beautifully written. I didn’t want it to end. It’s definitely one of the best books I’ve read in a long time. Anyway, I drove to the library, then realized the gas level was very low, so I continued on to the gas station, then I decided to run to the store because Don was just about to run out of his coffee. I only bring this up because we only have one car now, which is mine, I’ve been having a little battle with Don about when to fill the gas tank. He lets it get very low – waits for light to come on. I do not. My dad taught us to add gas as soon as it was down to a quarter of a tank. In the good old days when gas was much cheaper, he refilled when it was down to half a tank. So…I’ve told Don to never let it get lower than a quarter of a tank.

But he does. And then I get ticked off. Especially when I’m the one who has to run to the gas station.

Not a big deal, of course. But, depending on the day, either mildly or very irritating.

Okay. Enough of the mundane.

Sorry I didn’t respond to comments on Monday – too busy, too tired.

Stay safe.

Happy Wednesday.

Yup. I get nervous when the gas it too low. What if you have to evacuate for some reason. Chances are, if it’s a big enough deal to evacuate, you’re going to have trouble getting gas. Besides, it’s nice to be able to go if you want to go without the gas hassle!

I’m waiting for our pharmacy to get the new Covid vaccine. They said the end of September so it should be soon. I’ll be getting my flu shot today. I usually spike a temp the next day and feel kind of lousy so if it’s not today, it’ll have to wait till the weekend — we have Cork Poppers on Friday this time and who wants to be out of commission for that?

Right! You have to carefully pick the right day for the shot!

      Stay safe, Jeanie.

glad you and don are recuperating from the vaccinations, and had an otherwise enjoyable morning (donuts, wandering around a store, stocking up, taking it easy all sound nice). enjoy the rain and a (hopefully good) book!

also glad you made it to the gas station. i try to never let the gas tank get below a quarter for several reasons … the collection of sediments that settle in a nearly-empty gas tank that engine filters might not catch entirely, needing to let my car run a long time to warm up in winter (for not having a garage for most of my adult life), for safety when out alone at night, peace of mind.

more sorting again today in advance of tomorrow’s paper-shredding event (because the next one after that isn’t until may and i don’t want to buy another paper-shredder in case i wear out the one we have). tired of doing it, but will feel better for having it done. trying to do a bit of knitting most nights. that feels good, too.

happy, safe wednesday and thursday (and always) to everyone.

We only had a garage in San Diego (where it was quite warm). That’s it. We’ve parked out in the open since we moved to the East. And I parked on the street most other places I’ve lived.

      Thanks, Kathy.

      Stay safe.

I’m glad you have gotten you and Don have gotten your shots and are now over the reaction you get. I got my COVID shot Monday and it takes 60 hours from when I get the shot to recover, almost to the minute. Every time! I’m miserable with 101.1 fever, fatigue and large muscle weakness to an extent that I can’t navigate the stairs so I’m in my bedroom the whole time. My daughter gets intense pain in the arm in which the shot is administered and then a couple of days later, maybe, some fatigue. My other daughter always schedules her shot early Friday as her reaction is similar to mine and she doesn’t want to miss work.

We just got over a mini heatwave. It was fairly miserable to have to stay upstairs where my bedroom soared to 89 while I had a fever. Now, we’re anticipating some thunderstorms in the general area but I don’t think it will be very intense where I am. All the trees are still green. It seems to me that autumn gets more collapsed every year.

    Great vaccination progress, congratulations!

And differing approaches to buying gas, I know that struggle well! My approach is to stop if I am close to an easy to use gas station (like, not crowded, not creepy, room to maneuver around the tanks and one can pay from the pump instead of going inside) and fill up to the brim. My husband for years put $10 in (this was when gas was much cheaper) when the tank was close to empty. Thus lots more stopping for gas. It was OK when we had 2 cars, but with a shared car it was a constant irritation so you have my sympathy. Now he just fills up the darn tank!

I don’t know how long it will take him to finally get it….each time it’s as if I’ve never mentioned it before!

      Stay safe, Ceci.

I fill up when the gage reads half. I think it is a girl thing. I have friends who are the same, it is what are Dad’s told us to do, I assume.
I am glad you and Don are all vaccinated.
I started a new book “The Summer Book” by Tove Jannsson. It’s only 170 pages. It is a lovely, lovely book.
    Take Care,
    Kaye

I’m glad you got your shots out of the way. We got our Covid shots back in June….it had been 8 months since our last one. The pharmacist said that new recommendations were for our age group, to get them every 6 months. And she advised us to get them because she didn’t know if they would be available in October when we usually get them. We still have to get our flu shots…but that’s for next month.

We have a pretty strict rule on gas tank fill ups…we don’t go below half. We were stuck in traffic between exits on the interstate a few years ago due to an accident, and nearly ran out. At our age, we don’t like to take the chance.

I laughed at your Walgreens stroll….sounds like something we would do. Just change the name of the store lol. Enjoy your day! ;)

I’m glad you got your vaccinations. I still have Covid to go but will do it in October. Seems like September has flown by. I’m the only one who drives my car so the low gas is on me!! I tell myself to get some and then forget. And yes I do get mad at myself. Oh the single life. I’m enjoying the cooler temps and softer sunlight!

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
