I’ve added some dried roses to my little egg cup. When I first arrived in San Diego, I bought some roses that were so lovely that I felt compelled to save them. They are pretty fragile and won’t be able to travel home with me. In the meantime, I think they look perfect in this sweet cup.
I’ve been reading so many posts about the state of blogging lately. And one thing I keep reading is that bloggers hate word verification. To be totally honest with you, I’ve never had a problem with it. Maybe because I’m a fast typist? I have always thought if a reader can take the time to type several words for a comment, what is the problem with typing a few more characters? I’ve never let it keep me from leaving a comment on someone’s blog. Also, I’ve had spam problems in the past and having word verification really makes a difference.
But, I will bow to pressure and try….and I mean try…eliminating word verification. One caveat, however: if the spam gets out of control, it goes back on.
I am going to drive out to the beach today and do something I haven’t done since I arrived. Walk on the beach, take some photos and look for seashells. Most importantly, I am going to breathe in that salty ocean air. My Mom was admitted to the hospital yesterday because she passed out. She is being held overnight for observation. I have a feeling this is a recurrence of a blood pressure issue and I hope she is allowed to go back home today. So far, all tests have been negative. But she has been having a very hard time of it lately. I can hear it in her voice.
This distance thing is very frustrating at times.

Claudia… I’m so sorry to hear this about your mom! I hope and pray that everything will be okay with her. That is scary.
I don’t like to type extra characters, but I will because I want to leave a comment for someone. Rhoda told me a long time ago not to do it, so I stopped. But I found some SPAM on a back post. So what I did was this… I turned on comment moderation after five days. That way, they don’t have to type extra words, and I can still moderate and keep SPAM at bay. That might help you, too, Claudia.
And I love your rose and your egg cup and your sweet cloth. I like roses when they are fully blown and then like the one in your photo.
XO,
Sheila :-)

I hope you enjoy your walk on the beach. It soothes the soul and clears your mind. Everyone should have a beach!!
Hope your mom is fine.
And I love your egg cups. I am wondering if you eat eggs out of them.

I’m so sorry to hear about your mom’s health issues. Everyday we have with our parents is so very precious. They become so fragile and you just want to keep them safe. I’ll remember you both in my prayers tonight.
Brenda suggested I eliminate word verification. I did and have not had any trouble with spam … yet. I can understand why some bloggers keep it, and I am not put off by it. My feeling is that if one really wants to comment, the word verification should not be a hindrance. Enjoy your walk on the beach and take good care of yourself during this stressful time.
Love,
Susan and Bentley

Claudia, I had another blog a few years ago and had to eliminate it all togehter…I didn’t have word varification and the spam and other unwanted items were numerous. I gave up. I had someone tell me to put it on this time and I am glad I did. It may take a few extra keystrokes, but it sure keeps the bad stuff at bay!

Sound beachy to me! Wish I had one to walk on, kick some waves and enjoy for a day or two.
Hugs to you being so far away from family. I know the feeling well and miss out on a lot with the grandkids as they grow up.

I hope your mom feels better soon and gets an answer that will bring her peace.
I don’t mind word verification as much as I mind “waiting for blogger approval.” I’m an instant gratification kind of gal, I guess.

Hi Claudia,
I am sorry to hear of your mom’s hospitalization. I will keep you both in my prayers!
I don’t mind word verification either and get tons of spam on my blog. I really think if it’s important for someone to leave a comment, they won’t mind the word verification… what is two seconds worth? Just my opinion ;)
Enjoy that salty ocean air and the sand between your toes!

Word verification doesn’t stop me from leaving a comment but I’d prefer not having to do it, honey. While I understand the spam being a problem, it is easy to solve for me. I simply monitor/approve each and every comment left to me. It’s not a problem for me to do this. If they have word verification, I’d prefer the one where it is right on there so I can “tab” and it goes right to it. The one where you have to click comment and then the word verification comes up is just a waste of time for me. Being a fast typist also helps. I just never liked having another page come up for the verification. However, it’s not that big a problem for me, as I said, and it will not prevent me from commenting, sweetpes.

Hello Claudia,
I am so sorry to hear about your Mother and hope she is home and feeling her best very soon. xo
I had sooooo much spam that I now “approve” my comments. EVERYDAY they were very sneaky and find a old post to put links to pornography, and everything else. Such a invasion!
Friday, lunch?! I will email you back!
Hugs,
Maryjane

Claudia, I am sorry to hear about your Mom. I remember when my Mom went to the hospital I drove three hours right away…so I know it must be frustrating not to be near her.
I’m not too bothered by word verification…I’ve never not left a comment because of it. Makes me wonder if I have it on mine. I can’t remember!
Hope your Mom is better soon.

Hope your mum is feeling better Claudia.
I sometimes wonder if some of those who complain about word verification understand why you need to have it. Not everyone is ‘techsavvy’ enough to understand that spam ‘robots’ will hit blogs that aren’t protected in this way. If it’s a time issue then it’s a sad thing that we’ve all become so time conscious that we can’t take a couple of moments to do this to assist protecting the blogs that we follow. Like some of the others I prefer it over the option of ‘owner approval’ because of the delay in getting to read the comments others make before you. It comes down in the end to the old chestnut of ‘you can’t please all of the folk all of the time’ – and if you try to you’ll go nuts!
Pretty roses by the way, and keep them out of the way of Mrs K and the little joey because some people who live near koala populations say they raid their rose gardens at night!

Claudia, i am sorry to hear about your mom…i hope she is ok, and that it is nothing serious…i will say a prayer for that…i have read that too, that some people won’t comment if there is word verification…i just moderate my comments, that way i can get rid of the spam by myself…it’s no biggie really…easy peasy…

Hi Sweetie~ So sorry to hear about your Momma! Its good to take the time away at the beach to breathe. I think we all need to do it just to keep our sanity.

SORRY TO HEAR ABOUT YOUR MOM, ESPECIALLY BEING SO FAR. I WILL SAY A PRAYER FOR HER.
YOU COULD ALWAYS MAKE A SACHET OUT OF YOUR DRIED PETALS. PUT A FEW DROPS OF ROSE SCENT ON THEM, THEY WILL SMELL NICE IN YOUR SUITCASE. GET MATERIAL THAT IS SEE THROUGH, AND YOU CAN SEE THE DRIED PETALS.
TAKE CARE, RIZZI

I think the commenter above had a wonderful idea. A sachet for your suitcase! I wouldn’t have thought of that. I sure hope your mom is better soon. No one likes the hospital. If I have porn on old comments, I sure don’t know about it. Maybe that’s best! I’ve never used WV, and I haven’t had a problem in over two years of blogging. Hope I haven’t just jinxed myself!

hi claudia,
hope your mom is feeling better soon. the distance must be killing you.
i don’t use word verification b/c i’m one of those that hate it. i don’t mind typing a few letters but sometimes it’s ridiculously long and i can’t read them and then i have to do it again and again and well i just give up. so i’m basically saying that i’m lazy! it’s your blog, set it up exactly as you want it.

I’m all for word verification because spam is getting viscous.
I actually find myself amused at the wacky words that I have to type in…and if I get it wrong and have to do it twice…oh well.
No worries here.

For what it’s worth, word verification never bothers me. It’s not as if it requires a tremendous effort.
I love the roses in your egg cup. I have an egg cup collection and have never thought of using them for flowers.

Oh, Claudia, you and your mom (and dad) are in my thoughts and prayers. I hope they find out what was wrong and that she feels better than new in no time.
I also had a problem with TONS of spam comments and I switched my comments to no longer allow anonymous ones (which is how most of them came in) and I also have to approve comments before they appear on my blog. Some people just have nothing better to do, huh?
Many healing thoughts and prayers being sent to you and yours… Donna

Hi Claudia….I am so sorry to read about your mom. My thoughts and prayers are with you and her. I recall how I worried about my mom in the last year of her life. She led such a healthy, productive and happy life until then…I miss her so much.
Re: the blogging issues. I turned off the letter verification quite a while ago. However, as others have reported, if I have problems with it..I’ll change the setting back. I do not mind typing in the letter verification for others. I am not so busy that I can’t find a few seconds to do that for a blogging buddy.
Love your roses…….L, Dana

Hi Claudia:
It seems that the spammers always choose older posts, so I use owner approval after 3 days. I consistently have to toss a few every week, but that way I can avoid the verification feature. You might try this instead and see how it works for you.
Sorry to hear about your mum. I do hope she’s ok. I’ll say a prayer for her. And, as far as those earthquakes…YUCK!
From the looks of your photos in the next post, you had a lovely day at the beach. I’m so glad.
Perfect names for the new koalas, too! They’re so darn cute.
