More Egg Cups & A Special Delivery

April 19, 2019 at 9:55 am by Claudia

Today – Double Egg Cups. Double egg cups are made with two cups; the smaller one is for eating a soft boiled egg out of the shell, the larger for eating an egg in the shell.

Back row, left: an egg cup from Hankscraft, a glass egg cup I found this year, a brown transferware cup by Mason’s Vista/England (one of the first egg cups I purchased), a flow blue egg cup.

Front row, left: a lovely egg cup from France that I found in San Diego, a flowered egg cup (reminds me of Clarice Cliff designs) that I found in a local shop, a rooster egg cup made by Holt Howard in 1961, and another transferware egg cup with no mark – maybe Johnson Brothers? I’m not sure.

We have a new member of the egg cup family. It arrived in yesterday’s mail:

You’re not seeing things. It’s Sleepy!!

He’s in perfect condition. That red dot on the cup is paint under the glaze, so it’s original.

Remember that auction where the price for Sleepy was way over the top? About $350 or more, if I remember correctly. I watched that auction daily and, of course, there were no bids. The auction ended. The next day, it was back up, this time with an opening price of $75.00 American. (A Canadian seller.) I watched it every day for 6 days. There were others watching, as well. On the final day, which was last Wednesday, I made sure I was home in time to watch the last hour of bidding. I waited until the last minute to bid, and, since there were no other bidders (what?) I won! Couldn’t believe it. Truly, I thought I’d be in some sort of bidding war because this dwarf is the hardest to find. In 17 years of watching eBay – 17 years! – this is the only time I’ve seen it up for auction.

Also, there are two different Sleepys out there.  There’s this one, which is the right one, the accurate Sleepy, and another one that looks exactly like Sneezy down to the hand to the nose. The only difference is the name. I don’t know why that happened. Did they break the mold and have to resort to using Sneezy’s mold? Anyway, that one is more common. So, to have the real deal is just thrilling! I’m going to keep my eye out for the faux-Sleepy, as well, because it would be fun to include it in my collection.

This is the most I’ve paid for a Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs egg cup. Previously, I think I paid $55.00 for Snow White – also hard to find. But it was worth it. If I hadn’t grabbed the chance I might not have had another opportunity.

Huzzah! After 17 years of searching, I have them all! A photo of the whole gang will be forthcoming.

That delivery yesterday and the news that Gardener’s World (with Monty Don) is again available on BritBox made my day. Thank you to reader Lani for alerting me! Watching Gardener’s Diary  is like meditation for me. I immediately feel my shoulders dropping. It helped relax me in the midst of all the coverup activity coming from the WH and the Attorney General yesterday, so that’s saying something!

More tomorrow when we’ll be winding down our little egg cup tour.

Happy Friday.

Oh…I am thrilled for you! I’m looking forward to seeing the whole gang together at last. So…are there any other egg cups you’ve always wanted? I showed Sleepy and your other egg cups to my hubby this morning…he was really interested in them. They are a fascinating lot!

It’s a gorgeous day in the neighborhood today…with the promise of a gorgeous weekend. So, my yard is beckoning me. Lots to do…errands first, then, I dig in. Enjoy your day! ;)

A few figural egg cups are on my covet list. Otherwise, I’m open to the discovery of new-to-me egg cups. That’s part of the fun!

So glad you’re finally getting some gorgeous weather, Donnamae! Enjoy!

I’m so glad you found him! A new old egg cup for Easter! Yay! Much happier news than packing up to head North or watching the current news feed. Ugh.

FABULOUS NEWS! Oh, Sleepy is wonderful and I’m so glad you got him at a good price (if a high one — well worth it!).

I love all the cups you showed in the first photo. All so pretty, so different!

    Have a lovely holiday weekend!

I guess ‘high’ is relative. Well worth it in the long run, and definitely a great deal cheaper than the first listing.

      Thanks, Jeanie!

Congrats on getting your Sleepy at last! And at a bargain price too, evidently. Or at least MUCH better than that piker’s price of $350. Good grief. So does he make your collection complete? All 7 dwarves and Snow White? Have a great Easter weekend – hope it’s quiet, restful & if not sunny, at least warmish. We’re supposed to be cloudy-ish and in the 50s for the next 3 days, with rain expected today. Peace.💐

He makes my Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs egg cup collection complete, but not my egg cup collection! That is ongoing. We’re getting rain over the next several days and it’s sort of humid here today. Have a lovely weekend, Janet.

Oh, sweet little guy!! Back w his entire gang. Happiness!

Pretty day here. Supposed to be 75* for Easter. I will believe it when I see it! Lots of cleaning and cooking to do between now and then. With an aching knee, it all takes a bit longer. Thank goodness for a husband who is really helpful! I know you can appreciate that, too! Have a good & peaceful Good Friday!

I wondered if you’d ever really find your Sleepy. Congrats! What fun! Love the reveal!

Can’t wait to see the whole display; it’s a great feeling to have a complete collection of anything. You can’t have, in this case, Snow White with just a few of her dwarfs; she needs her whole team.

What exciting happy news, Claudia! Wow, that last second bidding can be stressful but Sleepy is now home! I look forward to seeing Snow White and the seven dwarves together.

I scored today too. I was at the crafting consignment shop in town and found a Sajou sewing box that was specially created for the magazine Marie Claire Idées, so it was a limited edition. I’ve coveted a Sajou sewing box for so long. Even though I got it for over 2/3 off retail (from my internet searches when I got home), the absolute best thing is when I was carrying it and walking back to my car, a woman stopped me on the sidewalk. She was the one who brought it to the consignment shop! She hemmed and hawed about selling it, but I told her my household is one of makers and crafters and it will be used and loved. She had tucked some extras into the box to be sold with the box: a darling lavender filled star-shaped sprite, whose ribbon was attached to a pair of embroidery scissors (so I get two scissors, since the box came with one), and a cute wee wooden-headed doll holding safety pins. I haven’t coveted a Sajou box for 17 years, maybe 10 years? But I’m happy we both got a long wished for item we’ll treasure.

No one else seems to be having a problem. There is an ad at the top of the page – at this moment – that says “Download PDF” but that’s all I can see. Since you can get here through Judy’s blog, it’s most likely not a problem on this end. Clear your browser’s cache. Put it in as https://mockingbirdhillcottage.com and see if that works. I think it has to do with your browser. I’ll keep checking on this end, but I’ve not heard of anyone having problems.

I knew you were watching that auction and I’m so glad you won it and at a price you can live with. So nice to have the full collection. We had big storms here today. I had to go out and get my Mom some things at the store so I went in between showers. It wasn’t bad at all. I think I have turned the corner on this cold/cough thing. Not completely well but heading that way finally. Hugs to you and Don.

    Sleepy and Monte Don!

Finding that treasure after years of looking and wishing makes the win that much sweeter, doesn’t it! And Monte Don is inspiring to this gardener. I’ve loved each and every series I’ve watched featuring him.

The first cherry blossoms appeared yesterday! Woo-hoo! We had a whole day in the 70s (I’d almost forgotten what a warm day felt like) so I filled and hung my hummingbird feeder with hopes for many busy summer visitors.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
