Just a dusting overnight. It will be gone by the end of the day. Still, it’s a nice thing to see a little snow out there this morning. I never thought I’d be saying that I miss snow, but I do. We also need it. But here we are, on the edge of February, and we’ve really only had one significant snowfall and that was in mid-December. The rest has been rain that turned to a wet snow and melted the next day. The kind you see here, where you can see the grass (still green, by the way) through the snow. When I look at the 10-day forecast, I see some snow showers here and there and that’s it. It’s also warmer than usual.
Now, one can say, this is great, Claudia, you don’t have to shovel or plow the snow! Yes, that’s true. But we need a snowpack. Our wells need a snowpack. Our lilac bushes and peonies need cold temperatures. I see a significant difference in a bush or plant when we don’t get those very cold temperatures and a lot of snow. Of course, there’s more to February than the first two weeks and we have March and the beginning of April to go. Here’s hoping we see a change.
My best friend just lost her mother-in-law last night. I’ve known Barbara since the early seventies and she was such a wonderful, fiercely intelligent, and kind woman. Laural is the first person to say that how much she was blessed by marrying into that family. Laural’s mom was like a second mom to me (along with my godmother) and she died many, many years ago. But Laural still had a wonderful mother in Barbara. This is very sad news. Rest in Peace, Barbara. You are loved.
We ran some errands yesterday. Today, I have to make an appearance at the post office to cancel our PO Box. I am NOT paying that much for something we don’t use all that often. So there, Louis DeJoy. By the way, now that the USPS Board has changed, why is DeJoy still there??
I’m just about to finish The Dictionary of Lost Words – I’m not crazy about it, but I’m enjoying it. And then…drumroll…I’m ready to start the latest Louise Penny. I always delay gratification on the newest Penny but now, two months after publication, it’s time. And of course, a chapter a day of War and Peace.
Stay safe.
Happy Tuesday.

Another loss. So sorry, Claudia.
We need to keep the snowpack in the Sierras, too, so I know what you mean by wanting more snow. Again, back to the balance idea!
Nice to have a good book to look forward to…enjoy!
Claudia says
Balance is everything and the environment is definitely out of balance right now.
Stay safe, Barrie.

Enjoy the Penny book.

Thanks, Brenda.

Marilyn Schmuker says
I am so sorry to hear about another loss for you.
I finished the book Spoiler Alert. What a sad story, but entertaining at the same time. I could really picture Sally Field as the mother.
Now I will watch the movie. I’m looking forward to it.
Strangely, as I’m reading this book, we got news that my husband’s brother who is gay, was just diagnosed with anal cancer. We don’t know what his prognosis is yet but I know it’s not the very aggressive type that Kit had.
Take care
Claudia says
I’m so sorry to hear about your brother-in-law, Marilyn. Sending positive thoughts for healing.
Stay safe.

prayers said and will continue for your brother-in-law and you all.

with condolences to and prayers for barbara’s family and you.
glad you can find some balance by reading a favorite author’s new book. also glad you got at least a little snow. hopefully a snowpack will follow soon enough.
it’s cold here so we still have lots of snow on the ground (since it fell nearly two weeks ago … a sad rarity here anymore) and it is beautiful, but we, too, are behind on precipitation. i’ve always loved weather (as long as no one and nothing gets hurt) and recall thinking, as a kid, that it’d be great if we could someday control the weather. i still have that wish.
to get myself more into starting a cross-stitch project, i spent a long time going through my supplies yesterday … winding floss on paper bobbins, setting aside for donation the patterns that i know i won’t ever use, etc. for inspiration, i watched some “flosstube” videos of stitchers showing their works both in progress and finished (a rabbit hole, for sure). and i went online to look at patterns … just in case. :) didn’t buy any, but put more than 50 on my wish list … haha.
hope that you, don and everyone else have a good, easy day today. stay safe in every way.

Claudia says
Oh, for some snow! We’ve had plenty, and I mean plenty, of rain, but we really need snow.
Stay safe, Kathy.

January is always my cross-stitch month too! It feels good to be creative and productive instead of sinking into that (all-too-easy) post-holiday depression. I have years of cross-stitch magazines with tagged projects so there is a wide choice of projects. I also fell in love with some online reindeer charts and treated myself to those cuties–I’ve stitched two of them so far and they were worth it. I’m more than halfway through a very large and complicated Santa sampler that I started eons ago. 2023 is the year it gets done and given to my son who believed in Santa way longer than anyone thought possible, lol!
kathy in iowa says
glad you treated yourself to some charts, roxie! and that you take time to do something you enjoy. am sure your son will appreciate your efforts and the happy memories it will bring. :)
i am ready to work on another project (been awhile) and relieved about that.
i set a goal to cross-stitch something for every household in my family, then had to stop a couple years ago when my back broke and i couldn’t hardly sit even for a minute (please, everyone, get your bone density checked!), but i am able to sit easier now. have four projects to go, maybe more (seen so many i’d like for the four littles). cross-stitch may seem uncool to some so i’ve chosen all Christmas or winter scenes … in case they don’t like it but feel obligated to put it out, it won’t have to be on display all year. :)
hope all’s well for you. happy stitching!

So sorry to hear of another loss for you.
I do hope you get a significant snow sooner than later. I’m sure all your plants and trees would appreciate it. Plus…it just brightens up the landscape. And when the sun shines…pure delight.
We are sorting through 30+ years of collecting dvds and blue rays. When they are hidden away, you really don’t know how many you have. It’s time for us to pare down.
I just started the latest Penny last night…figured it was time. Enjoy your day! ;)
Claudia says
It’s time to pare down on everything here!
Thanks, Donna.
Stay safe.
Donnamae says
(we have to pare down on everything too…lol.) ;)
Claudia says
It’s exhausting. xo
kathy in iowa says
agree … because it’s the same here (paring down, asking myself “why am I still keeping this thing?!?”).
best wishes to all!
kathy
Claudia says
I just have to be in a ruthless mood to do it.

Unfortunately he is still there because his term doesn’t have an expiration date and the USPS Board of Governors hasn’t voted him out. Great question though!
Claudia says
Oh I know that! But they re more Democrat-friendly, now, so I don’t get it!
Stay safe, Naomi.
Tana says
My husband and I both read Louise Penny. We read 13 of them and enjoyed every one. Then last year I picked up her latest, #14. My husband read it first and loved it. I got about three pages in and couldn’t get any farther. Don’t know why, but I just didn’t get hooked. I guess I should pick it back up and try again, but it just isn’t calling me. Should go get #15 and see about that one. I am so sorry of the loss of your friend’s mother. You and Don are going through the valley! So many of your friends passing. I know you are supporting each other. Blessings.
Claudia says
No. You have to go back and read #14. If you miss a book, you’ll miss character development and things that have impacted them that will show up in book #15!
Try again. It might have been your mood. I’ve had that happen. But I usually go back when things are better. And Tana, 3 pages is just not enough to judge a book by!! So that leads me to believe it was your mood/life at the time.
Stay safe!
Tana says
You are so right! I will go back and try again. I will read at least 5 pages a day until I am hooked! Thanks for the push.
Claudia says
You’re welcome, Tana.

Elaine in Toronto says
Excellent advice, Claudia, about sticking with a book when it just doesn’t grab you initially. I grew up thinking you had to finish reading every book you ever started. I know better now but I would hqve missed some good reads if I hadn’t followed that “rule”. Sending comfort to you in the loss of your friend and hoping you get some much needed snow. Hugs, Elaine
Claudia says
Thank you so much, Elaine!
Stay safe.
Roxie says
Getting a library card is high on my to-do list this year!
Shoveling snow is definitely great for my cardio and muscles and we’ve had enough that I can feel myself get stronger. Better yet is the snowpack for us gardeners! This has been the first normal-feeling season in years–cold and snowy–I’m loving it. Only Arizona is worse than Nevada drought-wise.
We have already lost family members and friends too. Each one will be fondly remembered and missed. I hope you and Don find comfort in the memories. I remember when it seemed like every conversation with my mom started with who had died recently. Now it seems like I’ve reached that stage of life. Sheesh.
Keep healthy!
Claudia says
Same. We feel like that, as well. Sigh.
Glad you have better snowpack this year, Roxie.
Stay safe.
