The first mow of the season.
We had to do it. Since we live on a hill and this section is at the bottom of the hill, it gets more water runoff from the rain and the grass in front of the porch and beyond is always longer than the rest of the lawn. Since we’ve had so much rain lately, we knew that we had to tackle the lawn before it became impossible to mow.
But, boy, the first few mows are tiring, mostly because we have a push mower (which we like) and we have to navigate some hilly areas and mowing the thick grass of early spring requires some additional muscle. The rest of the property doesn’t need mowing yet.
Another beautiful sunny day today.
I have one tulip, planted years ago by a previous owner, and I look forward to seeing it bloom. Well, not this year. Some critter chomped on it and there’s nothing left. I suspect it was a deer, but it could have been a groundhog or rabbit.
I saw a flash of orange beyond the lilac bush.
The flowering quince has started to bloom.
Today is the 8th anniversary of Mom’s death. I miss her every day, but especially lately.
I love you, Mom.
Stay safe.
Happy Sunday.

sending a hug and prayers for your heart and mind to have peace every day and especially on days like today.
glad you found that pretty flowering quince (if not the full tulip).
also, good work on the very-straight-lined, first-of-the-season mowing and now resting for your back’s sake. extra points for using a push mower!
we had some rain yesterday morning and again last night. loved seeing and hearing it. just didn’t last long enough. hope the forecast is good for getting more rain later this week. things are getting green and it’s welcomed!
need to finish some more chores. hope you have a good day.

Thank you Kathy!

That quince blossom is sooo pretty. I’m not usually a fan of red flowers, but that is the perfect red for me. Happy Sunday!
Claudia says
It’s actually a sort of orange/red. Very striking!
Stay safe, Shanna.

I understand what you mean about your mom. Mine was 45 years a few days ago. It gets easier. And it doesn’t.
Glad you could get a head start on the mow — I’m sure that could be pretty grim if you didn’t but hard with the back. I think I did a little too much yesterday trying to prune the bushes by my fence. They’re almost hitting the power wires and I suspect I will have to hire them done. Not feeling well again so we’ll see if I clean up yesterday’s mess and do a little more but not making a lot of promises. Maybe the best thing is to pull out the chair and enjoy my book!
Claudia says
You lost her so long ago, Jeanie. I’m so sorry.
I hope you ended up reading a book, Jeanie.
Stay safe.

You seem to be a couple of weeks ahead of us here as far as spring bloomers are concerned. I can almost smell the freshly mown grass…maybe by next weekend here?
We worked outside for a couple of hours yesterday…it was gorgeous outside. No sore muscles so far…hope I can keep this up, for there is much to do.
These anniversary dates are hard to get through I’ve found. May you find comfort in your mother’s memories! ;)
Claudia says
We have so much to do out there, but we definitely have to pace ourselves!
Thank you.
Stay safe, Donnamae.

dear Claudia/Don — lawn looks great — we also have quince bushes in bloom right now. Mymaw (who raised me) left us 45 yrs ago — feelings not as raw now as the first 25 years, but still miss her so much — seems like everyday I have something I want to tell her but cannot — especially with our grands activities/accomplishments – she would be amazed. memories can be good/bad. hope you all take care, stay healthy/safe
Claudia says
Thank you, Linda.
Stay safe.

I get it: I miss both of my parents more and more. Maybe in difficult, challenging times, there’s something in our brains which goes back to childhood comfort and security. What I find curious is how much I miss my mom’s cooking; this is like a regular thing with me.
That beautiful green lawn; how you must be enjoying it!
Our little bit of unexpected April rain can’t do much good now, as we’ve gone into another heatwave here in Southern Calif with the Santa Anas today, so windy and dry with almost a beige tint to the blue sky which means dust is all mixed up in it; SO terrific for my asthma (not!). Was 83 degrees at 11am but it’s not pleasant warmth; it’s hot. We’ll get thru it.
I’ve been sick for the past eight days — we won’t call it any kind of side effect of my fourth Covid shot; it HAD to be something else — but was almost back to ‘par’ yesterday, so we did go to the beach (our go-to, and the dog likes the car ride!) despite ‘road construction’ rumblings (and, yeah, in rush-hour traffic, it would be awful with highway lanes narrowed and often down to ONE lane; but this was the weekend and we just hit it right, thankfully) and it was such a tonic for me to see ‘my’ sea. I love the California coast roads. We went about 75 miles round trip. Was GREAT to get out after being shut down at home for too long. And to make matters spectacular … along the way … I had my first jacaranda tree sighting; in full purple, magnificent bloom!
Claudia says
I think that’s true. I want the comfort of having my parents around.
I envy you the beach and that jacaranda sighting, Vicki!

My thoughts are with you. It was my mum’s birthday on the 24th; she died in January, 2020, aged 91. In many ways I can’t be sad she’s dead, she was in constant pain and hated the loss of independence and dignity, but I still miss her every day. I found a letter the other day that she had sent me, and her writing on the envelope nearly broke me.
Claudia says
Oh, I know. Something like that can take your breath away. Much love to you, Denise.
