Mowing, Noble Robin, & Baseball

May 16, 2021 at 9:23 am by Claudia

Mowing was exhausting! Even though we love mowing, we mowed the entire front lawn (both sides), the far side of the house, the secret garden and the grass strip in front of the former corral. We tag-teamed, of course, but still…

About 3 pm, I fell asleep in my chair for an hour.

And this morning, we woke up at 4:30. Things are topsy-turvy here.

Another view of the bridal veil spirea. The blooms don’t last all that long, so I’m enjoying them while I can.

We’re supposed to get thunderstorms this afternoon. I’m hoping that’s the case because I won’t have to water the grass seed. Or the flower seeds.

If you look closely, you’ll see Noble Robin in the catalpa tree. That’s Don’s name for him. He fiercely protects that nest, chirping warnings at us, sometimes swooping over our heads to let us know we are not welcome. I took this when I was smelling the lilacs; he followed me there to see what I was up to and to make sure I wasn’t planning on doing anything nefarious.

We’ve been watching Ken Burns’ documentary, Baseball. Some of it I saw when it first aired. We’re really enjoying it, and learning a great deal, to boot. We also watched a little bit of baseball yesterday, part of a Twins game, and a bit of the Yankees (they are the enemy, since I am a diehard Boston Red Sox fan.) I do like the Mets, though. Anyway, it was fun, and we’re trying to figure out whether we want to fork out for MLB Extra Innings this year so we can watch the Red Sox. The jury is still out on that one.

Okay. I’m tired. I’m going to make some oatmeal to help ground me on this ‘lack of sleep’ day.

Stay safe.

Happy Sunday.

Noble Robin is the perfect name and apparently he takes his job VERY seriously.

We are Phillies fans. Can I just say . . . it has been a rough year to be a Philadephia sports fan. :::sigh:::

      Very seriously!

I hope it gets better with the Phillies, Dee!

I bought some more supplies today but I ended up being too tired to paint!

      Stay safe, Ellen.

That certainly was a lot of mowing for one day. You need to rest today. We (I needed my husbands help) had a good morning planting a few things yesterday, and then a gentle mist descended upon us for most of the day. It was great for the plantings.

We are having a family dinner tonight…we haven’t gotten together since Christmas…so I am so looking forward to catching up…and hugging!

It’s too bad you have to subscribe to something just to watch the Red Sox. Brewers fans here…fortunately we are close enough to Milwaukee, so there isn’t an issue.

    Enjoy your day! ;)

Yes, it’s hard being out of the area. The only time we can watch them is if there’s some national coverage on Fox Sports, for example, or if they’re playing the Yankees.

      Thanks, Donna.

      Stay safe.

I lived in Boston long before I moved to NY. Can’t help it! My allegiances are there.

Glad you love me anyway, Naomi!

I watched Baseball yesterday, too. That and “Jazz” are my two favorite Burns doc series. I’m not as gung ho on the more contemporary episodes (after the 70s, probably) but oh, I love the ones up to that time — back when “baseball was baseball” without steroids and super-salaries.

Marvelous on the mowing — that’s huge — no wonder you were whipped! I hope you get a break today.

Yes, we love Jazz, too. I think they are his best work and they’re always worth watching and re-watching.

      Stay safe, Jeanie.

Sounds like alot of mowing for 1 day. I’m glad you like to do it.
I have been weeding and mulching flower beds. I do not like weeding but I like the finished look so I do it. I’m not a true gardener…it is a chore I dislike. If I could afford to hire someone to landscape and maintain it I would.
    Have a relaxing Sunday.

I like doing all of that, but I must admit, it gets harder the older I get.

Beautiful pic of MHC!! We are at that point of the season when within about an hour of mowing, the dandelion stick fairies rise up, and the lawn looks a mess again. But, knowing that the the dandelions are the first food for the bees, we co-exist. That only lasts for a few weeks. We do have some sun today, so that is lovely. Hubs is planting the veg garden. That is his area. I do need to get some more plants into pots today. Tomorrow is our weekly babysitting day, so I know not to over-do today. For such a little thing, she exhausts us completely by the time she heads home. Maybe it is the 70 year age difference.

I hope you do get some quiet/ rest time today to renew and refresh. Take care.

Same here. Dandelions spring up almost immediately, but we feel the same way about them as you. The bees need those flowers.

Hope you had a good time babysitting, Chris!

      Stay safe.

I love watching baseball. But without a TV and living in Switzerland it’s not a frequent pleasure. :-) The first team I got to know was Boston Red Sox because I have relatives in the Boston area who passed on their boys’ clothes to us. Lots of Red Sox stuff. :-)

    Have a lovely Sunday!

The work was worth the effort!! It’s absolutely beautiful and charming. We did get a thunder storm here yesterday while I was in the next door town (only a few miles away), but when I got over our town line, everything was dry and sunny. Ive often mentioned that our little area has its own microclimate which is surprisingly different from the nearby towns, not just a little, but often a lot. It’s interesting, but it gives some of us wicked migraines. I’ve been up anywhere from 3-5 a.m. for the last few weeks and it’s causing my aches and pains to flare up. Also frustrating, because those hours are impossible to get any “business” done–can’t call doctors, pharmacists, insurance companies, repair people…why I have a dripping kitchen faucet for the last month. By the time the plumber is awake, I’m too scattered to call. Stay safe and enjoy your little piece of God’s Green Acres.

Yes, I could do without this early wake up. It does throw things off, doesn’t it?

Hope your sleeping schedule rights itself very soon, Nora.

      Stay safe.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
