I snapped this very quickly yesterday morning as I made my way to my car and a trip to the city. Two beauties! Today, as I look out my kitchen window, I see another bloom. They started blooming very late, but I must say that lateness has turned into a blessing. Beautiful new flowers every day as I see everything else slowly fading. And falling. I can’t tell you how many leaves there are on the ground. Leaves that I have to rake today.
I had a very good day yesterday coaching dialects on a production of Shadowlands, which is a play based on the unexpected meeting and marriage of C. S. Lewis and Joy Gresham. It’s a lovely play and the cast is terrific. I’ll probably go in again later in the week to finish some work with the actress playing Joy. My rehearsal was only a few city blocks from Don’s. Don is rehearsing in the same studios where Anastasia rehearsed and where I’ve worked more times than I can count on various productions – it’s perfect for musical theater because of the large rehearsal rooms.
I had no idea when he was going to be released and as I walked out of the rehearsal studio at around 4 pm, heading toward the bus terminal, I texted him. Turns out he was finished and just about to leave, so we met up on 42nd Street and had a quick bite to eat together. After all these years, when we see each other in the course of a work day, in a place other than our home, we’re surprised and delighted. Then I headed for the bus (managed to catch one just about to leave) and Don headed for his bus.
And there we are.
Today I plan on raking and mowing and running to the grocery store. Exciting, right?
Oh. The other day I looked out the living room window and who did I see?
Mister Henry, dining on some of the grass near the Funky Patio. I’m always delighted to see our friend, so I grabbed my iPhone. One of the windows was open and as I snapped the picture, from several feet away and inside the house, Henry heard it and ran for cover. That boy can hear everything. I cursed myself for not muting the phone before I took the picture because I don’t like disturbing him when he’s brave enough to get that close to the house. I’ve been known to delay something for a half hour or more when I see him out there.
Anyway, I’m always comforted that he’s alive and kicking and happy in his home under the shed.
Happy Tuesday.

It’s good to see Henry! And two intact morning glories. Our first one arrived rather disheveled and very late this year. Sadly, none are close to following. Sounds like Don’s rehearsals are in the theater where the show will be next spring…and where WE HAVE TICKETS!!
Claudia says
No, there not in that theater. They’re in rehearsal studios on 42nd Street. They won’t be in the theater until February 2018. But I’m glad you have tickets!!

Sounds like a great day in the city. Meeting up with Don is always great I’m sure! You two are so cute! My home is sorta back to normal but I am getting that Fall urge to purge again. It’s a good thing. The leaves are starting to change here and I hope to make a trip to the mountains in Oct for some good leaf looking! Henry is a cutie for sure. Hugs!

I definitely have a stronger than normal nesting urge. I want to start painting the rest of the kitchen, but I have outdoor things to attend to first!

Meeting up at 42nd St., sounds like a scene in a movie…you two are such a delight! Seems like outdoor work has to be a priority this time of year…we have to take advantage while we can. Always good to see Henry! ;)

Raking tons of leaves and then mowing – that was my list for today!

I was just wondering about Henry the other day. I saw our “Henry” come from under the house, and scamper through the woods. He was headed for the leftover blackberries. It’s funny how we worry about these wild creatures God has given us to watch over.
Claudia says
I love the way you put that, Trudy. We are entrusted with their care – that I truly believe.

Your quick bite with Don was a mini-date. Hope you have many more while he’s away. Your Henry reminds me of the squirrel that snacks on our tomatoes (and apples from another neighbor’s tree, and persimmons from yet another). We haven’t name him yet, but my daughter calls him a few choice names when he grabs one of our tomatoes or strawberries. A few days ago, I saw him gathering small twigs (from our thyme bed) and leaves and stuffing them into his cheek pouches. Then he’d climb the big pine behind my house. A few minutes later, he’d show up and gather again. I think he’s anticipating cooler weather and is reinforcing or building a new nest.
Claudia says
I’m sure he’s readying his nest for the winter – soon he’ll be storing nuts!

How much fun is that to be able to be so close in NYC that you can meet up in minutes for a quick dinner?? I know how hard separation can be, but this one (at least at this point in time) seems much easier than the NY to CA separation…. I know Houston and NOLA and Chicago is ahead, but for this time it is nice to have these moments. ♡
There is certainly a lot to do outside. I worked out there for a bit this morning and have concluded it is time to dump some pots of exhausted petunias which have given us their all! They are tired out and still trying to send out some flowers, but it is time. sad….
Hope your day is going well. It is a lovely day here today, but we are hearing of high temps and humidity again for the end of the week. How is the new mower??
Claudia says
I’ll get to see him in NOLA and in Chicago. Not the whole time, of course, but the visits will be very nice indeed!
I have so much to do outside and it’s still humid here. It never stopped. Today I was drenched after mowing the lawn. The new lawnmower is great – a bit more power than the old one!

I was wondering when Henry would make another appearance! I want to thank you for posting your vintage books on insta today. A Girl of the Limberlost has always been one of my favorite books, along with Freckles, and I try to re-read them once a year. You have the same vintage copy I have, and it made my heart smile today to think of all the other people out in the world reading and loving the same books. Today, when it seemed that we ( the US that is) are so out-of-step with the world — at least at the UN today—it was nice to think of threads that unite us with others. This is perhaps an inconsequential thread, and not even one that many people share, but for some reason it gladdened my heart to think of simple commonalities. So thank you for that little shot of your line of books and their brave, happy colors like little beacons of light on a dark day.
Peace and peace, and oh, please! peace–
Leslie P.
Claudia says
Not an all inconsequential – those threads are what keep me sane right now. Knowing all of us have much more in common than not! I’m so glad they were of some help for you today, Leslie.
Yes, indeed. Peace.

Henry looks like he is enjoying this early Autumn we are having…I’m sure he is preparing for his big nap to come soon!
Claudia says
I miss him when he takes his nap!
