On a Rainy Weekend

May 23, 2026 at 9:01 am by Claudia

It’s a rainy Saturday morning and it will be a rainy weekend. So, we have coolish in the 50s temperatures. I’m going to hunker down inside and do…something. I have no idea what that will be as I’m still waiting on the wallpaper and the seller has not updated me. I’m trying to stay positive but I did read several reviews about “why did it take so long to get to me??” and “doesn’t return messages.” We’re at the end of a 5 week stretch between Social Security payments, so I don’t have the extra funds to order something else.

I want to continue my work on the dollhouse, but more importantly, I need  to work on the dollhouse. It’s my escape from the continual assault on our democracy. Don and I talked about it last night. We have to be very protective of our emotional and mental health because we are not young anymore. We are in our mid-seventies and time is precious and life is precious and I CANNOT GIVE HIM THE POWER TO RUIN MY MENTAL AND PHYSICAL HEALTH. Nor will I give him the power to ruin my husband’s mental and physical health.

So I’ll sit down in the office and take shadowy pictures of the dollhouse, like these:

I do love the play of light and shadow inside the house.

This is the desk I made for Dove Cottage but eventually removed because it made the bedroom too crowded. It will finally have a home in the downstairs hall.

I hung the painting. I love it.

The clematis is in bloom. Happy, happy.

Don has a gig this afternoon at a sane time. He sings from 1-4 and he gets paid for it. So much of this kind of work is just tips. So actually getting paid is a refreshing change. And he gets home in time for dinner. Win-win.

I’ll be vacuuming, patching a couple of throw pillows that are not looking too good at the moment, and who knows what else. Keeping busy.

Stay safe.

Happy Saturday.

I’m glad Don has a gig today. Good for the soul. I hear you on the state of the world. And us, in particular. I’m doing much the same as you, trying to protect my mental health from this mess. There seems to be no end to it.

It’s raining here today too, so I guess I won’t be out in the yard much today. This morning I woke to seeing the beautiful blossoms of my geraniums chomped off — no doubt a hungry deer. I guess they need to go higher up until they get planted in the cemetery. (Theoretically this weekend but given the wet, who knows?) I hope you find some joy this weekend.

I always enjoy reading your posts. Those dollhouse interior shots remind me of paintings. As I recall, you’re a darn good painter!

Pleased Don has a paying gig, and will probably also receive tips. Hope you find activities to keep you occupied. There’s nothing worse for me than wandering the house trying to figure out what to do, when there is plenty to do but like a recalcitrant toddler, I just don’t wanna!

I do want to put my downstairs back to order after a couple of renovation projects. I had my ceiling can lights changed out to LED fixtures and I also had my fireplace removed. There are so many regulations about what and when to burn, and besides, we never use it because whatever we burn gives at least one of us an asthma attack.

The contractor will have his cabinetry sub-contractor build a bookcase for me to fit the entire wall. So, I’m waiting for the bookcase, which is a much wished for additional storage. He’s building the base to accommodate the kitty litter boxes. I’m most pleased about that. I have to find a charcoal deodorizer to tuck in there with the boxes.

Meanwhile, I continue to declutter though the avalanche of items that dropped into the donation boxes starting early last year has dwindled to a trickle. I’m digging hard into my craft books and supplies, really the last and most difficult items with which to part.

All my activities keep me busy in a positive way. As you stress, maintaining your mental and physical health is paramount and no one should be able to take that away from you.

hope the wallpaper arrives soon and you find other creative activities and supplies to enjoy in the meantime (or rest or read a good book and enjoy the rain). the beacon hill looks great so far.

it’s 12:30 here so don is singing right now … hooray! glad this is a paid gig for him. may the pay be great and the people there hoot and cheer loudly and spread good reviews for him everywhere they can so this becomes a regular gig for don for as often and long as he wants. and you have a nice dinner together tonight. (what’s on the menu?)

i’m only five years behind you in age and very strongly agree about protecting our own physical/mental health and that of our loved ones!!!!! peace for everyone and every thing … it’s not an option!

    happy, safe weekend!

Dear Claudia, I am with you all the way… I refuse to give that creep the power to destroy my joy in living. That is what he loves most… making people afraid of their own shadows. ‘Nuff said.
I LOVE the shadow pictures of the dollhouse! I have so much fun taking pictures of the way the light falls in my houses… it is one of those “RL” magical things… the wonderment of these tiny realities feeling so real… and pictures keep those moments. I am so glad Don has a “well timed” paying gig! Those are rare these days. Who goes out to be entertained? And I love the look of that bureau in the hallway of The Beacon Hill! Isn’t it wonderful how some of these little things take a while to find their place? It’s been ready and waiting….! I’m really glad you are working on this house! Enjoy the cooler weather and the garden blossoms.

Rainy Saturday here and so humid. Working on the house and getting some organizing and also some downsizing done with the help of a friend. I just can’t handle a lot of chores now. So fun to get old. Mental health is so important and I guard mine carefully also. Happy to hear Don has a gig.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
