On Books and Snow and Mini Books

February 25, 2015 at 9:02 am by Claudia

Happily, I was right. I did  have the first book in this series, Full Dark House, on my bookshelves in the bedroom. I knew I had a book by Fowler, but wasn’t completely sure it was the first. Don’t you love the font that is used for the title and author’s name?

They are now on the To Be Read stack on the very top shelf, as opposed to the To Be Read stack on the second shelf from the bottom. If by reading that sentence you have sensed an implication that I have far too many books ‘to be read’ – you are right. Or in the words of Ed McMahon, “You are correct, sir!”

Gosh I miss the Tonight Show of the Johnny Carson era. I love Jimmy Fallon, don’t get me wrong, I think he is a wonderful host and wildly funny. I just miss the days when Bob Hope might appear one night, or Gregory Peck, or George Burns, or Dean Martin. Ah, well.

The snow is piled so high around here that it feels like we are in prison. The shoveled/snow blown area where the car is parked is getting narrower and narrower. Pretty soon, we’ll be squeezed out!

We are yearning for Spring. At this point, the advent of Spring seems to be an impossibility, but we know it will come. When? That’s another story.

In all of our discussion on this blog and on Just Let Me Finish This Page about the ‘new’ Harper Lee book (and I have another link about that on JLMFTP today), we neglected to ask Caroline what she thinks about it.

2-25 dollhouseTKAM

There it is, on her coffee table; always on display, well-thumbed, read and reread. Caroline, by the way, is a Professor of Literature. She specializes in Twentieth Century Literature, so her opinion on all of this would be interesting, to say the least. I did hear some mumblings and grumblings emanating from Hummingbird Cottage on the day the news of Lee’s lost manuscript was announced. I was too busy to stop and chat with her. Besides, Caroline is rather private and I respect that. When she wants to talk about it, she’ll let me know.

New post up on Just Let Me Finish This Page today.

Happy Wednesday.

Good morning. I am up early because Bella had to be at the vets at 7:30 to have her teeth cleaned today. It always makes me nervous when they have to put her to sleep for anything.

Anyway, I am so sorry your weather is so awful. Hold on – Spring will be here eventually.

    Stay warm and safe.

I know that Bella will be just fine, Judy. Give her a hug from me!

Spring IS coming…I just know it. After all it was 15 this a.m. as opposed to zero. Of course, a possibility of snow is in the forecast for late tonight and maybe even Sunday. Sigh. Soon we will turn the clocks forward and the sun is definitely stronger these days. There is hope…..

I think it is fun to imagine The Tonight Show with JF hosting and having Bob Hope, Gregory Peck, George Burns or Dean Martin stop in. Amazing!!!!! And then the opposite ~ having Lady GaGa or Joaquin Phoenix stop in on Johnny. Different worlds!
Another miracle of the Universe is that Spring WILL arrive. Likely much later than March 20, that is for sure, but it will arrive. And somehow, surviving this wicked Winter will make it that much more sweet. As the song says “We Will Survive”!!

Definitely time for some warmer weather!
Much as I enjoy working on my dollhouse, I would quite like to be outdoors planting things. Or at least be able to fling all the windows open while I spring-clean.

I just love your mini TKMB. If you would like some eye candy, check out B.B. Miniatures. This very talented miniaturist from South Africa makes the most beautiful mini books. Her dollhouse is pretty amazing as well!

I will. Thanks for the tip, Barbara. I, too, would much rather be outside working in my garden.

I am not convinced Harper Lee’s new book is something she wants published. It concerns me is all I can say. I do love the font on the Fowler books! I’ve been reading quite a bit since being sick and stuck inside. Especially now that I’m feeling better. For awhile I just kept falling asleep when I tried to read. Stay warm and I sure hope Spring arrives sooner then later!
    hugs,
    Linda

I know you’ll be feeling tip-top in no time, Linda.

I have my real doubts about the wisdom of publishing that book. My gut tells me it’s not on the up and up.

I’m always surprised that my brothers and I, who are fairly avid readers, married people who are/were not big readers. My side of the bed had piles of books, that I constantly rearranged in reading order. My brothers have stacks of books on their side of the beds too. Our spouses had/have rather tidy but book-less bedsides…

Don isn’t a big reader, either, though he sometimes go in spurts and reads a lot of books.

Took one look at your first photo and thought, what a cute typeface! Just makes you want to pick the book up, doesn’t it? And yes, I miss the old “Tonight Show” too. I often sit through the entire DVD info-mercial just for the laughs, and the memories. And I find I’ve been smiling for a solid half-hour! I’ve done the same thing with the “Ed Sullivan Show” DVD too [even further back in my childhood]. Enjoy your day!

Hi Claudia, like you I am so tired of this winter and all of the snow. I’m recovering from major surgery I had three weeks ago, and at least I know I’ll be feeling much better by the time spring gets here! I’m so looking forward to seeing flowers again and that lovely smell of warm spring air…
And as always, Claudia, I so enjoy reading your blog. You lift my spirits everyday. Thank you!

My shelves are overflowing with unread books too, Claudia. Just when I think I will start one another one pops up. The good thing is that I am never bored. xo Laura

I can’t remember, has Caroline ever guest posted on MHC? I’m sure she would be very popular with your readers, much like Dame Scout!

She hasn’t guest posted. She isn’t quite ready for that yet, Cindy. But…hopefully she will be in the future.

But isn’t it fun to know a series has a lot of books? Then you know you can extend your reading pleasure for a long time (if you like them!)

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
