On the Road: Coffee, Reading & Snow

February 21, 2015 at 9:08 am by Claudia

2-21 Billy's

I posted this photo on Instagram yesterday. Isn’t this the best diner-like mug? I couldn’t resist. It’s very heavy and solid. Why is it that coffee just seems to taste better when it’s in a mug like this?

Don’t know. But it does. And it’s helped by that gorgeous shade of pale aqua on the logo.

I’ve read two books since I’ve been here: The Swimmer  by Joakim Zander, which I’ll be reviewing in a few weeks for TLC Book Tours, and The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry  by Gabrielle Zevin, which I’ll talk about on the book blog. Now, I’ve moved on to All the Old Knives  by Olen Steinhauer. Being out of town with a certain amount of free time on one’s hands and frigid temps outside that make walking more than 100 feet painful seems to be conducive for reading. Now, if I only had a fireplace…

I am going to venture out today as I don’t have a rehearsal to attend.  I hope I can swing a visit to The Mysterious Bookshop again. The shop isn’t open on Sundays, so this may be my last chance to spend some time in that little slice of heaven. We’re also due for some snow this afternoon, so I’m going to try to get going early before it really starts coming down. Poor Don – 4 to 8 inches due in our neck of the woods. Where the heck is he going to put it? Really. I’m serious. I don’t think there’s anywhere else to put it. (This reminds me of last winter, when I felt actual panic about how I was going to lift the shovel high enough to dump the freshly shoveled snow.)

I’m assuming that I’ll go home on Monday, but I have to confer with the director to get her take on how it’s all sounding. I believe I only have the apartment through Tuesday and Monday is the day off. I’m homesick and really need to see my husband and doggie again, but if I have to stay one more day, I will, of course.

That, my friends, is it. I’ve arranged to see the matinee tomorrow, so I can watch the Oscars in the evening. I suppose Mr. Sparks and I will be watching it together via an ongoing conversation on the phone. We’ve done that sort of thing before.

Happy Saturday.

Just catching up with you, Claudia. I see you are back away from home on a job again. I am sure you ARE homesick. We have not had as much snow here as some years but we have broken all records for number of days below zero (in a row). Super cold! ugh
LOVE that mug-I would want that one, too. I have my Dad’s old “restaurant” mug that I so love.
Have a wonderful weekend and I hope you get to that book store! xo Diana

Hi Diana, good to hear from you, my friend. Hasn’t it been terribly cold? I can’t wait for Spring!

I haven’t had a chance to comment lately – but I’ve been enjoying reading about your little adventure. Looks like a very interesting place. I know your doggie and Don miss you – so I’m looking forward to hearing about your reunion. Stay warm. In the heart of the country, we haven’t had much snow this year- but the temps lately have been frigid like almost everywhere else. We are all eagerly awaiting spring which is just around the corner, right?

Oh I bet you are eager to get back home, snow and all! I always feel like a lost puppy when I am away from home. But I do think drinking coffee from that wonderfully thick mug would take the pains of homesickness away..even for a moment.

Enjoy the rest of the time there and have a safe travel home.

    hugs!

So hope you get to head home. It will be nice to be back with your family in your own surroundings. You may have to dig Don out of a snow bank.

I hope you get to the bookstore again! It’s really cold here but no snow or ice..yay! Tiger spent the night so it’s been a crazy night and morning here! His Mom and Dad took a much needed evening getaway before Baby #2 arrives. I am losing my voice from this cold so by the time they pick Tiger up I will be ready for a book and a nap! I’m looking forward to the Oscars also…enjoy with Don even if it is via phone!
    hugs,
    Linda

That’s the perfect mug for bakery coffee…I bet that mug just cradles in your hand…for a cup or two. We’ve gotten very little snow here compared to other years…guess it’s all gone east of us. Hope you get to enjoy The Mysterious Bookshop one more time…and that you beat the snow! ;)

It is a perfect mug. No doubt about it! We’ve had SO much snow, Donnamae. Just like last year. I did beat the snow. Just got back and as I look out the window, it’s snowing.

    What a pretty colour!
I think the coffee mug must have been designed with you in mind.

We’re used to cold, but the windchills have been particularly fierce this winter. It occurred to me this morning that I haven’t seen a bird in about three months – kind of spooky.

The wind chills have been very bad here, as well. Fiercely cold. I have seen birds, thank goodness, but I’m sure ready for spring to come – if only to hear the sound of birds in the morning.

I agree about those restaurant coffee mugs Claudia..they also seem to keep your coffee warm for a longer time..It must be because they are so thick..I like the aqua logo too..Have fun at The Mysterious Bookshop today..better grab some more cupcakes too while you are out..The snow has started here..I just wish some of it would have melted before this arrived..it just keeps piling up..Have a good day..I hope you do get to go home Monday!!

Wonderful mug! Just wrapping your hands around it helps to ward off some of this chill we can’t seem to shake. Not as much snow here as in other years, but for me, the first inch is WAY too much. The cold, the stupid stupid cold is what is so awful. I saw a story on the news that homes w/ fenced in yards in the East can’t hold the dogs in because the drifts are so high they can just climb up and over the buried fences. Crazy. I hope you are able to get out and about today, and that you also find a cupcake along the way!! :-)

Happy Weekend Claudia – soon you will be home! Glad you were able to get to the Mysterious Bookstore again and that heavy mug looks awesome for coffee. It started snowing here about 4 hours ago…and is still going on…but they are still saying 40’s tomorrow (and now sun instead of rain). I read “The Storied Life…” a few months ago, so I’ll be curious to see/read your review…I’ll hold my comments till then. Safe travels home!

I love “diner china” too! I have a perfectly good set of white fluted Corelle that I’ve used everyday for years, and for company I have my Royal Worcester “Evesham” – that my mother started me on while I was in college. Which – by the way – I found out two years ago was the same pattern Princess Diana chose for her wedding – how about that? [!!!] But every once in a while I visit Williams-Sonoma’s website to lust after a dinnerware set they have in their tabletop section, old-fashioned white diner china – plates, bowls and mugs. Solid, chunky, creamy white and made to last. The kind that keeps a meatloaf dinner or a cup of coffee hotter longer, just because it’s so thick and substantial. If I didn’t already have two sets of china, I would order it… it’s beautiful. Enjoy your bookshop visit!

Hope you get to the book store again– and watching a favorite while on the phone with your fella… Well it’s just sweet !

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
