Outside at MHC

April 11, 2011 at 9:23 am by Claudia

Thank goodness for these daffodils, tucked in on the edge of our woods. Every spring, I somewhat obsessively watch this little spot, knowing that when I see yellow blooms, our winter hibernation will be officially over.

That there is a hyacinth, my potted hyacinth from last Easter, transplanted to the garden bed. I watch it obsessively, too.

Our property has little surprises everywhere. The wooded area is overgrown with brambles and wild roses and later on in the season, poison ivy. Beyond the shed, right at the edge of the property line are some forsythia bushes. I donned my hazmat suit the other day and fought my way out there, thinking it was time to force some pretty yellow blooms. Smile.

Also on the edge of the property:

The remains of a house. It’s right by the road and the ground above those stones is fairly flat. If you walk down to the road, you can see more of it. I wonder who lived there? And just how long ago was it built?

I managed to get a photo of our elusive cardinal. As I opened the blinds in the den early one morning, I saw a woodpecker, several sparrows, 2 blue jays, and the cardinal. Things were hoppin’ out by the maple tree. I ran for the camera and with the help of my telephoto lens, managed a slightly blurry shot.

And finally, one of the neighbor’s cats. This one likes to hang out in the back forty. And take naps. And taunt Scout. He wasn’t in the mood for a photo shoot:

He was ready for some jungle exploration.

It’s going to be an unseasonably warm day today. 80 degrees.

Be sure to come back on Wednesday. I have a book review for a book I really loved. And I’m giving one away.

Going to be quite warm here today too. Spring better stick around for a while because I’m not liking the thought of summer right on it’s heals. Last year spring was very short… too short when all of a sudden summer came blasting through the neighborhood.

    Dear Claudia,
I still have no daffodils blooming here, on my property–but the Forsythia, are in bloom here too, we do have some bushes of that, too.
Crocuses are beautiful, in my garten-but the Hyacinth`s are also not more than green leaves ,yet.
You lives in a beautiful spot, too I love your “jungle” :)-

    Wow, at first I
    thought that was
    a WOLF in the last
    shot, until I looked
    closer!! Isn’t it
    great how color in
    the landscape ~ be
    it plant or bird ~
    just POPS this time
    of year? On the surface
    it’s still kind of
    ugly out, unless we
    tilt our lens and
    notice the small things
    that stand out, which
    is what you’ve demonstrated
    beautifully, here.
    Thank you!

Claudia, you must be in a warmer zone than me. My daffodils are no where near ready to bloom. It’s so lovely seeing signs of spring after our harsh winter, isn’t it?

Every time I see a cardinal, I think of my mom. It was her favorite bird. I also loved the photos of the robins in your last post. They’ve arrived in Massachusetts, too. They are the most fun to watch in the birdbaths as they bathe with reckless abandon.

That cat looks HUGE! If you hadn’t said it was a neighbor’s cat I would have thought you’d captured a small wildcat of some kind!

Enjoy the weather. We’re back down in the 40’s and 50’s for a while, with rain moving in… Donna

Eighty degrees!? No kidding! Glad to see you back home. I peeked in at a couple of your “away” posts. Fun to see your old apartment and that part of the country generally. Glad you had time to snap a few pics. I was blown away by your new miniature wicker chair. Just exquisite! SO glad spring is finally happening your way.

What….the daffs are up? Time for the G.B. to get back home. Yipeeeeee…

Sorry, I’ve been soooooo relaxed poolside on this trip. Don’t want to miss one part of being outside after the long winter.

Should get back to normal next week when back home.

beautiful stroll around MHC, claudia. i have a little replanted hyacinth that i’m watching, too!

stone walls are all over new england. they’re so pretty. do you think that was a house or maybe just a property line? we were letterboxing last week in the woods and came upon some. so cool and historic.

    happy tuesday

Hi Claudia: I am enjoying your photos and seeing the surrounding land you have. Looks like a lot of maintenance to keep up with. I am hoping for a postage stamp sized lot next move. This having acreage is more work than I like. Happy Spring and Birds Who Sing…

I remember cardinals from living in Ohio but it’s been decades since I last saw one. I forgot just how colorful they are. And wouldn’t it be interesting to know more about the house that was? Have a wonderful week.

PS 80 degrees sounds so good to me.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
