This morning at around 6:30 am, as I made my way down the driveway to get the New York Times. (Yes, our Christmas lights on the porch are still twinkling every night.)
I knew it was coming, yet I was still shocked. And we’re getting a whole lot more next Tuesday. Plus, the temperatures are plunging down to the single digits over the weekend, never getting higher than the twenties.
I can’t even go there.
How will my lilac buds fare?
March, you’re pissing me off. Really pissing me off.
This is a scene that would have charmed me in December. I’m not charmed at the moment.
Ah well. You can’t fight City Hall and you can’t fight Mother Nature.
Don is getting better, slowly but surely. He’s not going to leave until next Friday or Saturday. Then I’ll be leaving a day or two after that for NYC.
I went to the bookstore, bought two books, and promptly felt guilty because I have so many books in my TBR pile. However, the books in the pile just weren’t doing it for me. Don encouraged me not to feel guilty. So I’ve left that behind and have started The Dollhouse by Fiona Davis. Pretty good, so far.
Some shoveling is on the docket for today. And some bathroom cleaning.
Try not to get too excited.
Happy Friday.
Linda @ A La Carte says
All that snow! I hope your lilacs survive. I try not to feel guilty when I buy a book but sometimes I do. It is funny how a book sounds good and then it doesn’t and then it does. I have a full day at home and I’m looking forward to it! Hugs.
Claudia says
I hope they survive, too! I’m worried about them. Do I brush off the snow or keep it there to insulate the buds. I’ll have to google that.
Shanna says
Hahahahaha! I know it isn’t pleasant to be in the midst of winter weather during what should be its last gasp. (We spent the better part of our years right in it.) But from out here, in the blazing sun, it still looks charming. That red shed in the snow is so pretty!
Claudia says
It isn’t at ALL pleasant, Shanna! Thanks.
Debbie Price says
SNOW! Not funny! We normally get your weather a day or two after you. I am NOT looking forward to snow in March.
I am glad Don is doing better. Do you feel better?
Be careful shoveling.
Claudia says
I am feeling much better, though I still have some residual congestion and a bit of coughing. My sinuses are complaining about the extreme weather changes.
Kay says
Yeah, March pretty much sucks so far, doesn’t it? To make matters worse, I work on a college campus and the students are leaving today for Spring Break. My undergrad student workers are all under the impression I get “spring break” too. Delusional innocents!
Claudia says
Oh, those students! They lead sheltered lives!
Judy Ainsworth says
Don’t you DARE feel guilty we Work hard to make our lives good, and never stop living and growing. You just pick up those books, and enjoy! -Judy A-
Claudia says
Okay, Judy! I will! xo
Brooke from Oklahoma City says
Oh, those photos are BEAUTIFUL, especially the red of the barn against the snow. That belongs framed and hung up! Our weather here in Oklahoma City is generally like what you are experiencing now. Rarely two days in a row the same, especially during the winter. Welcome to middle America! LOL
Claudia says
Or to Middle America and the Northeast! Sounds like we have much the same very changeable weather, Brooke! Have a great day.
Wendy T says
So sorry about all the snow. Hope weather is better when it’s time for the two of you to travel. Don’t feel guilty…just enjoy.
Claudia says
I’m pretty sure it will be. Next Tuesday – at least, as of now – another huge snowstorm. But if Don isn’t leaving until the end of the week, we should be fine, Wendy.
tana says
We are still getting snow on and off here in the Seattle area so I know how you feel. Temps below normal is now normal. When I see friends the first thing that is said is “I am so ready for spring. The real SPRING.” All of our coping skills and been used up. I would cry, but I don’t think I could stop. So just day by day. Glad both you and Don are feeling better.
Claudia says
I understand. If we let go and truly cried, it would go on and on! Hang in there, Tana. xo
Bess says
I sympathize, Claudia, but on the other hand, your photos are gorgeous! What pretty scenes. Hope you enjoy your new books! Bess
Claudia says
Thank you, Bess. I am just about to settle down and read one of the books!
Donnamae says
I hope this makes you feel better….it is bitterly cold here today, and we are to have snow on Monday. You are not alone. The only good thing is that snow this time of year usually doesn’t hang on for long. I have at least 10 books in my TBR pile that I got at the thrift store…so my “new books” took their rightful place at the top of the pile! I refuse to feel guilty about that….I have enough other things that I can feel guilty about. So…enjoy your books! ;)
Claudia says
We’re on track to get over 12 inches, Donnamae.
I promise to enjoy my books!
Aunt Lou says
I had to laugh at your getting mad at nature, Claudia!
Many years ago, we moved to the Catskills from Lancaster County, PA. Imagine my surprise when we got snow on Columbus Day (October 12th.) Imagine my further surprise when it snowed on Memorial Day, the next Spring! The local paper even ran a photo of a folding lawn chair with half an inch of snow on it’s aluminum armrests. :)
Claudia says
I don’t think we’ve ever had it on Memorial Day but my parents did when they lived way up in Northern Michigan. But we have definitely had snow in early October – several times since I’ve moved here!
Vicki says
Because my stupid spare car has no air conditioning, I am dripping (not glowing) from doing errands and appointments over the past 4 hours or so. I specifically got up at 6am to get chores done, pets fed and be out of here before the heat started in….muggy, hot, nasty-nasty heat; I can’t even say how much I dislike it…and I pulled in somewhat after 12 noon and the gauge in the shade says it’s 90 degrees here at home which, of course, due to the heat index/humidity (still wet ground all around us, but we’re losing it fast) means it feels more like it’s 100 degrees, at least to me. I’m as sick of these too-many hot days (supposed to be even hotter through at least Monday) as much as you are of cold days; wow, the irony, and what a diff coast to coast. Maybe we could trade: Coastal valley SoCalif for beautiful, cool, snowy, postcard-worthy, upstate New York. You might be over it, but I’m up for it, Claudia!!!
We didn’t start anything from seed in the garden this year, so I just bought the sorriest vegetable plants at the garden center. I hope I can perk them up; so wilted from the heat (like me!). But we are determined to plant this weekend, so it will be heirloom tomatoes, bell peppers, mints and basil for now. (Just the scent of chocolate mint when I water it sends me over the moon.) My rosemary is so hardy; it never succumbed from last year’s crop and grows so prolifically in its raised bed. Cucumbers and zucchini to follow soon. Maybe pole beans (Blue Lake). We always wait too late to plant and I want an earlier yield in 2017; you just can’t beat organic veggies and fruits out of your own garden. A tomato plant can be stuck just about anywhere; easy, for what you get in return. It’s a really calming, enjoyable thing for me to pick fruit and veggies out of my garden; I always feel transported, as if I’m my great-grandmother in the 19th century. Being out in the garden is when I actually will (briefly) tolerate some afternoon sun, as long as I have on my big straw hat! Chomping into a plump tomato fresh off the vine and warmed from the sun is so delicious.
Thank you for posting the gorgeous photo. The red shed looks magical in all that lacy white. I’m glad you and Don are on the mend. Have a special weekend, the two of you; last one for awhile.
Claudia says
You are welcome to the weather here, Vicki! I’d gladly trade at this point!
Chris K in Wisconsin says
So rotten is this crazy weather. It is SO COLD here today. I think we are to get some snow on Monday, but I did hear that a bigger one is heading your way. Ugh. Just ugh. Usually these don’t last on the ground as long ~ if that is any consolation whatsoever.
I hope this one melts before the next one arrives. And hope that they are all wrong in their forecasts. Have a lovely Friday night.
Claudia says
Yes, it’s a nor’easter. That means trouble – over 12 inches of it! This one won’t melt because the temperatures are so cold here that it will never get out of the twenties today or tomorrow!
Mare in Oregon says
Here in west central Oregon the sun is shining for the 1st time in weeks and temps are 64 degrees – did some outside cleaning – hooray. I understand your feelings about the snow and cold – enough is enough already.
Glad to hear that Don is doing better as yourself. My saying is that you cannot have too many books. Take care .
Claudia says
You’re right about the books. If I had the space for thousands of them, I’d be thrilled!
Pamela Spencer says
Oh bother with this crappy weather. So unpredictable. Every time the barometer changes, my
sinuses go crazy too. Infections, bronchitis, the whole gammut! It is freezing here in Michigan
and extremely windy. Power out day 3, probably for a couple more days, but no snow (so far).
Those few warm days were teasers weren’t they? My tulips are up, daffs up, buds swelling
on everything. Please survive. I hate to think what this is doing to our cherry crops up north
this year, heck, all crops may suffer. But like all the comments, your photos are lovely, just
not NOW! Take care. Hope Don is feeling better. Pam
Claudia says
My sinuses are nuts right now! So I have residual congestion and coughing and it’s annoying. I’m so sorry about the power being out, another reader (from Michigan) said hers is out, too. And I know my nephew’s power is out, as well.
Nancy Blue Moon says
It looks pretty much the same here today also Claudia…I get mad at this weather too…It gets so warm for a couple of days that you keep thinking the Spring is coming..then it turns back into Winter at the snap of a weatherman’s fingers…hate it…It is so cold tonight that I don’t even feel warm enough in the house…Do you have the high winds too?…They were just terrible today…I just looked and sure enough we are supposed to get that snow next Tuesday too….ah yes…That Mother Nature is a fickle lady isn’t she?..lol
Claudia says
Yes high winds last week, yesterday, today – they’re endless. We’re getting a nor’easter on Tuesday, Nancy!
Sharon says
Thanks for the laughs!…”Really pissing me off” and “Try not to get too excited”…both made me laugh!
Claudia says
Oh good!
Dianne says
Pictures really are beautiful but definitely the wrong month for the budding plants! For me perfect weather is in the 50F to 80F range; not a degree more or less! Sadly, Mother Nature doesn’t seem to be on the same page. There are a few places that normally meet those requirements. Carmel has multi-million dollar houses with no air conditioning and occasionally only a dusting of snow. Pure heaven for me. Hope you can enjoy a snuggle up and nest day. Dianne
