More Painting!

February 13, 2013 at 8:53 am by Claudia

I’ve painted a lot of furniture in this cottage.

I don’t think I realized the extent of it until I was sitting here in my blogging chair yesterday. I looked up and saw the television cabinet, my little corner desk, the lamp table by the sofa – then, looking into the living room – the table the dollhouse sits on, the kitchen table, and the kitchen island. And upstairs? Well, I’m just completing my painting binge and it includes two bedside tables, a dresser, a sideboard. a blanket chest and the cabinet in my studio.

Time to pull in the reins.

Some more shots of bedroom changes:

bedsidetable

This cabinet is made of oak, but the top was replaced by something inferior long ago. It has shelves inside, rather like those of a music or flat file cabinet. Don gave it to me years ago because I needed a bigger bedside table. Now it’s on his side of the bed. The wood was not in great condition and, frankly, I was sick of the oak. Painted. I briefly considered adding an applique that I have to the center of the door. It would have added a French touch. But, hey, this is Don’s table and I don’t think he needs or wants that sort of frou-frou. (Note: one coat of primer, three coats of chalk paint. Not very cost effective, in my book.)

btableknob

See where the veneer had peeled off? Paint helps to disguise that. I changed out the knob to one that I bought at Michael’s a year or two ago. I’ve been waiting to find the right place to use it. I think I found it.

mybedsidetable

Here’s my side of the bed. That’s an old typing table that I use as my bedside table. The top was painted a dark brown, so I lightened it up with the danged chalk paint. Still not a fan. You can see, again, our sharply sloping ceiling and what a pain it is to work around. If we didn’t have a headboard, we would never be able to sit up in bed and read. But the headboard means the bed sits out a bit from the wall. (I store our luggage in that space between the wall and bed.) Several years ago, I bought an Expedit bookcase from IKEA to fill in the space next to the bed. I needed a place to store some of my books. (We won’t talk about the boxes of books in the shed.)

It also provides a display space for photos and treasures. Among them you’ll see a photo of my sister and me, our dearly missed dog, Winston, with Scout, and a black and white photo of a rose taken by my late brother. On the bedside table is a tiny photo of my brother and me that I treasure. I’ll take a picture of it someday soon and share it with you.

bookshelf

I added the framed photo I took of a double rainbow over the cottage. My vintage hatbox is one of my favorite things.

quilt

This is the other quilt that I made 3 years ago in San Diego. I quilted about ¾ of it and then I stopped. I blame the darned Obsession Scarves. After I finish the bed quilt, this one, which is the size of a large wall hanging or throw, is going to be finished. Gosh darn it, I wish we had more wall space in this bedroom because it would look really striking on the wall. The colors are perfect for this space.

My reality shot for the day:

messystudio

My un-pretty studio. It has become the place where all the paint cans, stirrers, sanding blocks, old sheets, drop cloths, wax and paint brushes are stored.

Oh, I lied. I have another reality shot.

don'sdresser

This is Don’s dresser.

We bought this piece from a vintage store in San Diego. At the time it was in pretty good shape and we loved the 1930s look of the piece, with the inlaid wood and different finishes. (It’s the same sort of piece as the china cabinet in the den.) But the veneer has come off on various parts of the dresser. Those handles, by the way, are keepers. That’s Bakelite in the center of each handle.

Side note: I’m not an Americana-y type decorator. I’m not at all drawn to anything done in red, white and blue. But the quilted flag is another story. I made that for Don many years ago because we met on the Fourth of July. He insists on hanging it above his dresser. And those are my flannel pajamas in a basket on the right. That’s a McCoy dog on the dresser and it was actually intended for just that thing. It has a little tray to hold cufflinks, etc.

So. Advice please. What the heck do I do with the dresser? Don tells me I should get rid of it. But then I have to find something else to replace it. Is there a way to refresh this piece? Should I paint it? Someone suggested painting it in the same way I painted my dresser, but I don’t like matchy-matchy pieces. It needs it’s own individual treatment. What do you think?

Happy Wednesday.

A Painting Binge

February 12, 2013 at 8:54 am by Claudia

I’ve been on a painting binge.

I am not someone who particularly likes to paint. I’m an impatient painter. (That may be why I haven’t painted any of the walls downstairs. I know it will be a big undertaking.) Spurred on by my wish to brighten up and pull together our bedroom and the knowledge that Don will be home next Monday and I’d like to get everything cleaned up by then, I’ve been painting like crazy.

My dresser. Long story short: I found it on the street in Cambridge well over 20 years ago. I enlisted the help of a friend and we carried it 4 city blocks to my apartment building. Then up 4 flights of stairs. It had the same sort of dark stained wood that the kitchen island had when I first brought it home. I painted it gray. Somewhere along the way during our time in San Diego, I painted it yellow and added green knobs.

IMG_3253

I was tempted to keep it this cheery color but after many years, the paint was cracked and the yellow, which is brighter than this photo indicates, just didn’t go with the newish color scheme. I love this piece. The drawers stick, they don’t quite close, but who cares? The details are charming. And it was free.

Here it is, newly painted:

dresser1

The aqua is the same shade that we used in our downstairs bathroom. Antigua Aqua latex in an eggshell finish by Benjamin Moore. The drawers are painted in the same color chalk paint, Old White, that I’ve been using on the other pieces.

dresserknobs

I switched out the knobs.

dresserleg

I love the legs.

dressermccoy

I have two of these McCoy bowls. One is downstairs. The bird’s tail needs to be reglued. It keeps falling off.

jewelryholder

Years ago, I bought this hook at Anthropologie. I have a C, as well. I can’t find the C, so D for Don has become my necklace holder.

jewelry

The dresser is right next to the piece I repainted last week – the one that holds our big old television. Right around the corner from that piece are some of my eggcups.

eggcups

dresserandcherubs

It all started with this French Cherub painting I bought four years ago from my favorite shop in the world, Vignettes. It became my color inspiration.

You can see that we have a true attic bedroom – sharply sloped ceilings, smallish windows. It presents a big decorating challenge.

There’s more. I’ve painted our bedside tables. I’m contemplating what the heck to do with Don’s dresser. A photo will be forthcoming with a request for your suggestions. All of that will be tomorrow. The finishing touch will be off in the not-very-distant future when I finish our quilt.

I’d get rid of the Berber carpeting if I could but Don likes carpet in the bedroom. Since I make most of the decorating decisions, I figure he deserves to have carpet.

I’m also repainting the cabinet in the studio.

Then I’m done. Except for Don’s dresser.

Tune in tomorrow for more.

Happy Tuesday.

Tinkered Treasures – the Book!

February 11, 2013 at 7:30 am by Claudia

I’ve been blogging for almost five years (next week) and early on, I met Elyse Major, who blogs at Tinkered Treasures. We became friends. Over time, we’ve done a swap, we’ve emailed back and forth, we’ve talked on the phone, and we’ve given each other presents and advice and encouragement. We were lucky enough to meet each other 3 years ago, almost to the day, when I was in Providence on business.

elyseandme

We had brunch together and it was as if we had known each other forever. If I hadn’t had to be at a rehearsal, we could have talked all afternoon. Elyse is a wonderful writer. She is also a tinkerer, making charming and wonderful things from simple, everyday items you can find around the house or at your local craft store – always in her distinctive Elyse-style. She has always had a dream to write professionally  – and she does. You’ll find her byline in many of your favorite decorating magazines. Now, she has realized another dream – to have a book published.

Cico Books graciously sent me a copy of Elyse’s new book, Tinkered Treasures, to review.

elysebook

Elyse describes her transformations as ‘tinkering’ because there is a sense of play involved. Tinkering is about “leaving behind any worries of perfection and appreciating the flaws. Tinkering is about making a little time to add playful details to your life.” If you’ve seen any of Elyse’s creations, you’ve seen that playful spirit. I’ve been the recipient of many Elyse creations. Here are a few:

elysemytreasures

The tinkered can? Adorable and on page 60 in the book under the heading Desk Tidy.

elyseclothespins

The clothespins? I have many and I love them. On page 28.

elyseclothespindoll

This adorable clothespin doll? Page 30.

By now you’re getting a sense of Elyse’s whimsical, sweet, and refreshingly down-to-earth style. That style is beautifully realized in the design and layout of the book, with charming illustrations and clear, easy-to-read directions for each project.

elysebookpage2

What can I say? It’s a wonderful book. These are easy-to-make projects. Fun projects. Elyse has been making these tinkered treasures for a long time – offering them in her Etsy shop, sending them to a friend just because, all the while playfully creating things from clothespins, cans, fabric scraps, jars.

I love it when I see a book of this type that is so true to the author’s sense of style. There’s not a false note. And I love it even more when someone who has a long-held dream makes that dream come true. I couldn’t be happier for my friend. And I can honestly highly recommend this wonderful, tinkered-treasure-filled book. It’s available on Amazon and is being officially published on February 14th.

elyseflyleaf

There she is. Doesn’t she look pretty? And happy? Hurrah, Elyse! And hurrah for anyone fortunate enough to buy this book. You will love it.

Happy Monday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
