You think I’m kidding? I assure you, I’m not. And I’m sure that many of you are doing the same thing. But even a budget of next-to-nothing might sometimes allow for a wee purchase. Just a small one. I have to do this kind of thing every once in a while because it makes me feel a little better. No, I’m not shopper who buys things in order to feel better about myself and I’m not feeling sorry for myself. But there are times when I simply need to buy a little something and I set a limit of $20.00.

This month – November – is the month of my birthday.

It’s a big one – one that I’m in denial about, one that I’d much rather avoid.

It’s looming.

So I just might need a little pick-me-up. Because life has been depressing as of late and I have been immersed in a feeling of hopelessness.

I dropped off some things to donate to Hurricane Sandy relief yesterday and stopped in at a favorite antique shop.

I came home with these.

I love old glove boxes. I often see them in solid colors. These faded prints are harder to find. Marked down to $4.50.

Adorable McCoy pot in my favorite color. Actually, this is a Nelson McCoy pot which pre-dates the McCoy markings.

See the NM mark? This is a smallish pot with a nifty design. I haven’t purchased anything McCoy in quite a while, partly because I only have so much room here at the cottage and partly because I’m trying to live as frugally as possible. (See headline.) Interestingly, the day we discovered Mabel (my Featherweight ) which is my early birthday present, I had this very pot in my hand, ready to purchase. As I stood at the counter, I decided that the Featherweight was purchase enough and I handed the pot back to the owner of the shop. I also saw the glove box that day.

Fast forward several weeks and they were still there.

They were waiting for me, don’t you think?

I’m happy to say that the total price for these two items came in at well under $20.00.

They Need Our Help

It’s going down to 28 degrees tonight. And the next few nights are also expected to bring temperatures that are below freezing.

We have heat. We have shelter. We have food and water.

It could easily be a different scenario. We live in upstate New York, relatively close to New York City. We suffered during Hurricane Irene. Many of my neighbors experienced flooding and some of them lost their homes. The path of Hurricane Sandy affected us, yes, but somehow we escaped the brunt of her wrath.

I know that all of you have watched in horror as television networks have documented the devastation. Our local news comes from New York City, therefore, the coverage we have seen has been even more extensive. Short of permanently turning off the television, there has been no way to escape the very real and heartbreaking losses my fellow Northeasterners are suffering. Nor would I want to.

Everything else pales in comparison.

We’ve given to the Red Cross.

The neighboring town is collecting donations that will be transported to Staten Island, Long Island, New Jersey, Hoboken, wherever help is needed. We will be contributing.

As you enjoy your Sunday in your home, with heat and water and a bed to sleep in, with food to eat and clothes to wear and a car with gasoline in the tank, please take a moment to contribute something to those victims of Hurricane Sandy. Ten dollars. That’s all. More, if you can; but everyone, even those of us who are struggling to pay the mortgage and our bills, has ten dollars. Our fellow citizens need your help.

A Favorite Thing #10

Welcome, friends, to A Favorite Thing #10.  That’s a nice even number, isn’t it? Once a week, we all come together to share a favorite thing – it could be a place, an object, an activity, even a person or a pet….something that brings a smile to your face and has a special meaning for you. Let’s look at some of last week’s highlights:

Manuela, of A Cultivated Nest, shared her teapot collection. It’s a beautiful collection, with a toile teapot or two that so remind me of Manuela’s style. My personal favorite was this fabulous Mackenzie Childs teapot. Good thing I’m not anywhere near your home at the moment, Manuela!

Cass, of That Old House, shared the pumpkins she and her daughter, Anne, created for Halloween. I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw this pumpkin that Anne carved. She did it free-hand. Totally beyond my capabilities.

And Susan, of Ash Tree Cottage, shared a moving tribute to her beloved father, who died two years ago. What an incredible man and father he was. I know he’s smiling down on you, dear Susan. Your loving words described him beautifully.

Gosh, I really love hosting this get-together. I learn so much about you and I thank you for that.

This week, I’m sharing my Necco Snow Globe. What the heck is that, you ask? Well, last year I found this gorgeous, vintage Necco Candy Jar in a local antique shop.

 It’s quite large and I love its Art Deco lines. My readers gave me lots of suggestions as to the things I could display in my jar. But this was not long before Christmas and one day I had a little light bulb moment. Before I could blink an eye, I found myself creating this:

My Necco Snow Globe. I used my bottle brush trees, a little Putz house and a pine cone. The snow is Kosher Salt.  I thought this was temporary and that after the holidays I would put the jar to another use. But I love it so much that it remains on display today – same scene, same snow globe. How fortunate! I already have one Christmas decoration ready to go!
