The Prettiest Blue

May 7, 2023 at 9:21 am by Claudia

Well, I said I would rest yesterday, but I didn’t. At least, not enough. I had to tackle the poison ivy that seems to be all over the place this year. And then I had to do some other pruning.

All of which involves my dang back.

Anyway, I’m glad I did it, but my allergies are now haywire and I have to rest my back, so today IS going to be a day of rest.

It’s another lovely sunny day – so appreciated after so many rainy days.

I roamed around the property with my telephoto lens and got some nice shots, which I’ll share with you this week. The following photo, though, was done very quickly with my iPhone so as not to stress out any robins. I had to carefully ease the phone between the climbing hydrangea branches and hope against hope I got something. One chance only.

You can see a portion of the third egg at the bottom of the photo. Either a baby is pecking at that egg or there’s some schmutz on top of it.

I love the beautiful color of robins’ eggs.

Since I’m taking it easy today, mom and dad will get a break and they won’t have to stress about my comings and goings on the property.

Very exciting! Though I’m sure we’ll miss out on babies leaving the nest. It’s too far from the house and frankly, the birds around here seem to have a sixth sense about the perfect time to leave without our knowledge. Then I get sad that I missed it all.

Tomorrow morning is Don’s appointment. He cannot wait to get that bandage off. What was once carefully wrapped is now rewrapped daily by Don or me and we’re not so good at it. Right now, Don is playing his ukelele. He taught himself a Gordon Lightfoot song this week – “Steel Rail Blues.” It sounds good!

Stay safe.

Happy Sunday.

A Foggy Start

May 6, 2023 at 8:27 am by Claudia

Early morning fog.

It’s since burned off and the sun is shining.

I did a bit too much outside yesterday, but it was worth it. I pruned the wild roses down by the mailbox so the path for the mail truck was clear. I pruned more wild roses here and there and pruned both of our prickly bushes. I weed whacked. And I finished mowing the front lawn, then I did the corral and the secret garden. I’ll hit the back forty in a few days. Oh, and the lilac side of the front lawn. (The expected rain never came, thank goodness.)

Exhausting, but satisfying.

All day long you could hear lawn mowers starting up. Everyone was out there tackling their overly long grass after over a week of rain. I was going to wait until today to do the secret garden because it was so wet back there, but the grass was easily 8 inches long, so I mowed it.

Then I came in, took a shower, turned on the heating pad, and rested for the remainder of the day. And bonus: Don (with just a wee bit of help from me in opening packages) made both lunch and dinner.

We watched The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. This is the final season and I think it’s the best season ever. That’s saying a lot because it’s consistently brilliant. I will miss it so much that I’ve already decided I’ll watch the whole thing all over again. And most likely – again.

Two more days until –  fingers crossed – bandage removal.

Today is my beloved brother’s birthday. He passed away in 1991. Happy Birthday, Dave. I miss you.

It’s also his youngest son’s birthday. Happy Birthday, Eric.

Stay safe.

Happy Saturday.

More Lilacs

May 5, 2023 at 9:03 am by Claudia

While we still can:

Taken the day before yesterday. The scent is heavenly, we have more blossoms this year than ever. Now, if I could just see them on a sunny day. Sun? Where are you?

Yes, today – the day where we were finally going to have no rain – will be rainy in the afternoon. I am over it.

Come Sunday, the temperatures will hit the seventies and, boy, are we ready.

I have to run to the grocery store this morning and then I’m going to try to do some mowing and pruning. Fingers crossed.

Shhhh! I have to say this quietly: I am really ready for the removal of Don’s bandage so I no longer have to cook and do everything around here. He did help make the entree last night, which is a step in the right direction. And I was grateful, believe me. I think he was happy doing something, as well. If I’m frustrated, he must be three times as frustrated. Anyway, here’s to Monday!

The other day when I was mowing, the robins were giving me warning chirps the entire time. Even when I was rather far away from them. So have the babies been hatched? I’m not sure. Because I don’t want to upset them too much, I end up racing through any mowing that occurs near the shed. It’s exhausting.

The honey bees are back as well, constantly flying around the opening in the catalpa tree.

For those of you who missed it, Brenda left a comment on yesterday’s post, which I copied and added to my post. You can scroll down to read it. I’m relieved to have heard from her. Writing comments, for some reason, is difficult for her right now. When she’s ready, she’ll share more. Or not. I’m just very happy to have heard from her.

Stay safe.

Happy Friday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
