Excavating

February 17, 2012 at 9:54 am by Claudia

Pretty, isn’t it? That guy – a very nice guy, by the way – is looking at our septic system. It’s been acting up lately – we’ve noticed some leakage, even though the tank has been recently emptied. Fast forward to more digging with the excavator, more pipes uncovered. All filled with tree roots. The leach field is shot. So we have to get a new one installed today and tomorrow.

For, oh, about  $7000.00.

You can imagine what kind of day we had yesterday. I can think of all kinds of things I could do for $7000.00 – all of which would be a little more fun, a little more pretty, than a leach field.

These roots have apparently been doing this for years. We’re the lucky owners who have discovered it. And the roots are from the weeping willow, which means the willow is going to have to come down. It’s old and fragile and every time we have a big wind storm we worry it’s going to fall. Now that we know how troublesome the roots are – to the tune of 7K – we have no choice but to take it down.

And it breaks my heart. It’s my favorite tree on the property. It’s one of the reasons I fell in love with this house. I’ve already told Don that I will not be around on the day that happens. I simply couldn’t bear watching my sweet willow come down. I cry every time I think of it.

So that’s what’s happening at Mockingbird Hill Cottage.

I have to show you at least one pretty thing today. Meredith made this beautiful shawl/scarf in the softest gray. It has tiny sequins in it. Oh my goodness. It’s beautiful. And it’s going in the shop this weekend, along with another beautiful shawl. I’m crocheting like crazy and hope to be adding more Obsession Scarves this weekend as well.

Enjoy your Friday.

Thrifty Living 2012 – Saving Money on Groceries

February 16, 2012 at 8:49 am by Claudia

It’s Thrifty Living time again. This week we’re discussing saving money on groceries. I don’t know about you but I’ve often checked out at the supermarket and been totally shocked by the amount of money due. It adds up so quickly.

There are two of us here. And two dogs. The dogs are on prescription diets and that food is expensive. Nothing we can do about that. (I consider dog food part of our grocery list and these dogs apparently like the expensive stuff!)

I’m a vegetarian. Don eats a basically vegetarian diet. We don’t buy meat and that is a savings. We try to eat very healthily. Surprisingly, eating healthy foods, especially organic foods, can be very expensive. Don’t get me going on that one. It simply amazes me that eating food that is free of pesticides is more expensive. Go figure. So, while I try to buy organic when I can, when money is tight I will often go for regular produce. But, on the whole, we try to avoid processed foods. We eat a lot of fruit, vegetables, rice and soy products.

Our grocery buying is not done in one store. We use our local supermarket, our health food store and Trader Joe’s – as well as our local farm stands in the summer. In the supermarket, I will often buy their  brand of various items because they are less expensive. They have a pretty good health/organic food section, as well. I find the prices of a the supermarket just down the road to be better than those of a major supermarket chain in the neighboring college town which is about 9 miles away. So, besides being closer (thus saving gas) our local market saves us money at the cash register.

(Don at Trader Joe’s – I know, we’re nuts.)

Every two or three weeks we go to Trader Joe’s, which is an hour away from us. I know that many of you do not have a TJ’s nearby. I hope you get one someday. Their selection is amazing and the prices are significantly lower than anywhere else. We are able to get an amazing amount of healthy food for half again as much as we would pay anywhere else. (Plus, they have fabulous fresh flowers!)

Certain food items are purchased at the health food store. Fortunately, our local store has an ongoing program that keeps a running tally of the amount of money spent by each customer (we all have account numbers) and when we reach a certain amount – say $200.00 – we get $25.00 off on our next purchase. Money saved.

In the summer we try to buy fresh fruit and vegetables at local farm stands. We have a lot of farms in our area. We support our local farmers and also know that the food we are buying is fresh and healthy. And cheaper, since it’s grown locally and we don’t have to pay for packaging and transportation costs.

I try to buy everything I need at once, because I know that quick trips to the store add up. Sometimes, though, we need something that we don’t have on hand and off to the market we go.

I must admit I am not a coupon person. I’d like to be, but I always forget to use them. And most of the coupons I see are for items I’m not interested in purchasing. But if you are a coupon user, more power to you!

I also don’t buy in bulk from Costco or BJ’s or any of those wholesale clubs. We have limited storage space here at the cottage. I’ve learned that I usually don’t have enough space to store those things and I end up losing money.

We eat at home 99% of the time. Cooking at home is cheaper. Eating out is expensive.

This spring will be the first spring in over four years that I haven’t been far away from my home working on a coaching job. I do have a job in CT, but I will be able to come home for a couple of days each week. I plan on putting in a vegetable garden. Just a starter garden, but my hope is to have some fresh vegetables grown here at MHC that we can use daily. That will also be a money saver!

The Story of the Valentine’s Day Surprise

February 15, 2012 at 10:19 am by Claudia

See that (youngish) couple on the beach? There’s a Valentine’s Day story to this photo so I thought I’d share it with you.

Many moons ago, 1995 to be exact, when Don and I were courting, one January day we took one of our walks together on a local beach in San Diego. This particular beach was special to us because we’d met there. I was about to leave on a two week trip to audition prospective students for the theater program.

We had only known each other about 6 months. But we were in love, that we knew.

A man approached us, camera in hand, and introduced himself. He was a photographer for the San Diego Union Tribune and had been taking photos of us from the pier. Could he use one of them in a story slated for Valentine’s Day?

We were both surprised by the whole thing and after hesitating a bit, said yes.

He took down our information and gave us his card.

Almost immediately, I regretted saying yes. You see, we both worked at the same theater. I had students that also worked there. We were keeping our courtship very quiet because I didn’t want everyone, especially my students, to know about my personal life. At least not until we saw where this new relationship was going.

I panicked. I had visions of everyone at the theater talking about our photo being in the paper. Of someone ripping it out of the paper and posting it on one of the bulletin boards at the theater. Since I had to leave, I begged Don to call the photographer and say we had changed our minds. He did. We still wanted a copy of the photo if at all possible so Don asked him if we might be able to get a copy. We’d be happy to pay for it. No, the photographer said, it was against the policies of the newspaper to give a copy of a photo to anyone who was not willing to be credited in print. Ah well.

I left town. I came down with the flu while I was away and arrived home on Valentine’s Day eve, sicker than a dog. The morning of Valentine’s Day, Don knocked on my door with flowers, chocolate and a wrapped package in hand. Still sick, I unwrapped the package to find this framed photo.

I couldn’t believe my eyes.

How did he do it? Well, Don has his ways. He pursued the photographer, told him our story, charmed and cajoled him until that lovely man said he’d make a copy for us. No charge. I had no idea any of this had been going on. I just sat there, framed photo in hand, and cried.

You do understand why I fell in love with him, don’t you?

This remains one of our most cherished possessions.

I hope you were surrounded by love yesterday and every day.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
