Welcoming Mei

January 13, 2022 at 10:30 am by Claudia

Say hello to Mei.

She didn’t arrive until 10 pm yesterday, so the light was limited. I took her up to our room for the night – I did this with Pip, as well. She didn’t arrive until 9:30 pm.

If you notice a resemblance, you’re right. She was customized by Natalia, the same woman (of VegaDolls) who customized Olivia and Pippa.

But there’s a little story here. Natalia bought her over a year ago. She had already been customized by someone several years ago, but the skin was yellowing and she needed to be restored. Natalia wanted to save her. When she felt ready, she worked her magic by re-carving the face, restoring the skin, adding makeup and coloring, and adding beautiful new eye chips and now we have this new Mei. She’s called Mei because that name was written on the inside of her head and I’m going to honor that. (Plus, we called my sister Meredith a variety of loving nicknames when she was a little girl, one of which was ‘May.’) Mei, in honor of my beloved sister.

So. Natalia rescued her and you know I also am a rescuer. When she rescues a doll she has an auction for it, rather than selling at a specific price. You can message her with a bid and when the auction is over, whoever has the highest bid wins. I debated on this one. Did I need another doll? Of course not. Did I want this girl? Yes. I felt drawn to her. So I took a deep breath and submitted a bid and figured I would lose. One afternoon, as I was working on the puzzle, I got a message from Natalia saying I had won. I was completely surprised.

She was shipped from Spain on Monday and she arrived here two days later. Amazing.

I will dress her in something else later this morning and take some photos.

Shoelaces gone wild.

She is dear, isn’t she? There is a wonderful winsome quality in all of Natalia’s dolls. I’m completely charmed by the sweetness in her face.

Bless Don. I hadn’t yet told  him about the impending arrival of another doll and I suddenly had to when DHL informed me they were delivering the package a day early. He was excited and supportive and delighted and…well, he was Don, the best man I know.

It’s warmer here today. We’ll get a break for a couple of days then back to the cold and maybe 3-5 inches of snow on Monday.

Stay safe.

Happy Thursday.

It’s Ice Station Zebra Time Again

January 12, 2022 at 9:57 am by Claudia

Good morning. Still very, very cold here! It is supposed to get warmer today but Friday and Saturday have nighttime lows in the single digits. We aren’t getting any snow, but we are definitely feeling winter’s frigid temperatures.

It takes a long time for the house to warm up when it’s like this. Both of us are walking around in more than a few layers of clothing!

Don has a self-tape audition this morning. It’s just a routine thing, so don’t get excited. But it’s the first audition since before the holidays, so it’s encouraging. Anyway, right after I finish this post, we’re going to set everything up.

The puzzle is ongoing. It’s taking me longer than I expected but I just popped in a few more pieces while I was waiting for the second cup of coffee to finish dripping – or pouring through, to be more accurate. Morning seems to be my best time for figuring out the puzzle – fresh eyes? Rested? Who knows!

Other than that, there’s nothing new. January is always a hard month for me. I suspect it’s the same for many. The holidays are over. The decorations have been taken down and stored for another year. It’s bleak outside. Add in the low temps and the constant drip we have to run so the pipes don’t freeze and you have what I’ve often called an “Ice Station Zebra” situation here. I tend to get a bit down. So I have to keep myself busy with tasks and puzzles and projects.

I did notice last night that it’s staying lighter longer – quite a bit longer. That’s a positive, right?

Okay my friends. I’m going to make this brief as Don is setting up in the den and I’m currently occupying it.

I can hear a woodpecker in the distance and, even in this cold, I heard a bird sing this morning.

That makes me smile.

Stay safe.

Happy Wednesday.

Tuesday Thoughts From the Heart

January 11, 2022 at 10:13 am by Claudia

What a great discussion we had yesterday! Thank you for your wise words and perspective. I am blessed with wonderful readers.

Oh boy, is it cold here! It’s 9:30 and it still ‘feels like’ -3°. It’s also quite windy. Needless to say, we’re going to hunker down here today, only venturing out to run the cars for a few minutes and get the mail.

That jigsaw puzzle I’m working on is hard! Jeanie mentioned that she did it last winter and she had issues with it, too. Yesterday, I sat at the table and though I did add some pieces here and there, I was stumped (I was also sort of out of it yesterday) so I walked away for a while. Don was upstairs recording, so I didn’t have the opportunity to do any work on the Beacon Hill. Today, I’ll be in the office/studio starting to prime the red room.

But I did sneak up there to play with my dolls for a bit.

Livvy and Zoe offering their thoughts on wallpaper samples. From their reaction, I don’t think either of these are on the table.

Okay, girls! I’ll keep looking!

I cannot express how much I love these dolls. They’ve brought such joy into my life. And the Blythe community on Instagram is pretty darned wonderful and supportive.

My thought for today: do whatever brings you joy. I worked in offices for years and I was very unhappy. I’ve temped, I’ve worked for a ‘biological media and reagents’ company – both in Detroit and in Philadelphia. I worked at an animal hospital. I worked as a receptionist. I did makeup for productions at the Philadelphia Opera Company. I worked 40 hours a week in an office and then worked an additional 30 hours doing theater. I did whatever I had to do to pay rent and put food on the table and for many, many years – well into my thirties – that’s all  I did. I couldn’t afford to indulge in anything other than the basic necessities. So I know what it’s like to live frugally, to sacrifice. And when I decided to freelance after we moved to the east coast, I was back doing fill-in work between coaching jobs. It isn’t an easy life, but it’s the life I chose –  that we chose – and I have absolutely no regrets.

Creativity – whether in my work in the theater or elsewhere – brings me joy. Collecting things I love brings me joy. Reading and books bring me joy. Looking around my house at the things Don and I have found and purchased – at the egg cups in the cubby, the Roseville in the china cabinets, the McCoy pottery everywhere, the books on shelves in the den and in the bedroom, the dollhouses, both newer and vintage, the dollhouses in progress in the office, Don’s guitars, his Big Boys on his desk, his speakers and microphones and other paraphernalia, his journals and notebooks, his awards, our mementos from the theater, paintings we love on the walls, the quilts I’ve made and the throws I’ve knitted and crocheted, Stella, my grandmother’s piano, my great-grandmother’s china, my dad’s Model T car made of lead, his paintings, my mom’s Shirley Temple doll, and the Blythe dolls – all of that brings me joy. It makes our house a home, it reflects just who Don and I are. I have no regrets about any of the things I love and collect for they tell a story. Minimalism has no appeal for me, though I certainly understand why others like it. But it’s not for me. I love vintage and used. I love color. And I love to collect things I am drawn to, that make me want to research them, to know more about them, to discover over time. In the end, it’s what I’m surrounded by that stimulates me.

I’m so grateful to be have had a career in the theater – something I’ve sustained over 40 years. To do what you love is priceless and I never take it for granted.

But to live a life of kindness and compassion – for other humans and for animals, bugs, birds, bees, trees, plants – all  living things, is my ultimate goal. And The Golden Rule is my guide.

I really went off on a tangent there, didn’t I?  Sometimes – quite often, in fact – writing a post brings clarity to who I am and what I believe and want in my life. Thanks, friends, for reading and caring enough to read this blog.

Stay safe.

Happy Tuesday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
