Flowers and a Heat Wave

June 23, 2025 at 8:30 am by Claudia

The milkweed (and there’s way too much of it!) is blooming. The scent is so lovely.

As I type this, I can hear the call of a mourning dove. My favorite bird.

And the bee balm has started to open.

But the bee balm is getting crowded out by the milkweed, so I’m going to have to be more diligent next year. I’ll have to pull some of the milkweed at the beginning of the season. There are at least 30 plants in the big garden bed. I remember the first time I saw some milkweed on the property. It was up in the back forty. Then it gradually migrated down to the big garden bed and the bed in front of the porch. After it finishes blooming I’m going to check each plant to see if any eggs have been laid, If there is no evidence of any eggs on some of the plants, I’ll pull them. Don’t worry, there will still be plenty of milkweed left.

The high today will be 97. We are under an extreme heat warning with heat indexes of up to 110 degrees. Tomorrow is Don’s birthday and the high will be 99. Yikes! Luckily we had no plans except to have some sugar-free ice cream and that’s already in the freezer.

I won’t comment on the felon’s actions this weekend, except to say that we’re already discovering giant holes in this story. I think it will backfire on him.

For all of you coping with this heat wave, stay indoors, and stay cool.

Stay safe.

Happy Monday.

Getting Ready

June 21, 2025 at 7:33 am by Claudia

This little rose emerged, a bit battered by the rain. I thought I should take a photo of its resilient beauty.

Everything needs to be weeded around here. It’s completely overgrown. But with all the rain, there’s been no time to really get at it. And in two days we are entering what the weather app calls an Extreme Heat Warning. It will be 99° on Don’s birthday – which is Tuesday. Heaven knows what the heat index will be! This will go on through Wednesday and then we’ll get some relief. I’m going to run to the grocery store this morning to stock up since we’re not going to be running errands during the heat wave. And I’m going to try to weed whack the area around the secret garden. It’s like a tropical jungle back there.

Right now, the windows are open and I can hear birds singing. I saw a bunny rabbit first thing this morning. So darned cute! We do have a groundhog the year, but I’ve only seen him about 3 times. Lots of little chipmunks, and squirrels, and birds at the birdbath. I expect the birdbath will be very busy for the next several days.

This will be a short post, as I have to get going early.

Stay safe.

Happy Saturday.

Changing

June 20, 2025 at 8:46 am by Claudia

It was unbelievably hot and humid yesterday with some thunderstorms. We basically stayed inside.

I couldn’t concentrate on my book and the weather is wreaking havoc on my allergies, so I decided to take a photo of some of the girls.

Jessie, Wren, and Audrey. Before I took it, I changed Wren’s outfit.

And then I found myself redressing a few more girls. I’ve been wanting to do this for a few months, but everything I wrote about in Wednesday’s post has kept me from it. I just couldn’t get motivated.

I pulled out the suitcases full of clothes and made a start. If I’m in the right frame of mind, this simple task can be incredibly soothing. I grab a few girls, look for something that suits them, and start the transformation. It’s almost meditative.

So Wren got her change and then Harper, Miranda, and Lily.

Here they are on the ottoman that is in front of my chair. Once I’m finished, I hang out with them for a while.

I’m going to try to redress a couple of girls every day. I mean, a couple of them still have sweaters on! Since the temps here are going up to 99 next week, I think they’ll appreciate something to wear that’s cooler.

Hey, it’s my little doll world and sometimes it is the perfect escape.

Stay safe.

Happy Friday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
