Give

December 15, 2016 at 9:22 am by Claudia

My friends, as I sat in my den last night, filled with despair at the state of the world and our country, worried about the safety of my fellow citizens here and abroad, the environment, animals, and civil rights (I could go on and on) I wrote a post on Instagram. Some of you follow me there, so you most likely have read it already, but many of you don’t do IG, so I would like to share it here and maybe add a bit more, as it’s much easier to write on this blog than to peck out a long text on Instagram. I’m most likely preaching to the choir, but it’s all from my heart.

“It’s the Christmas season and I’m profoundly aware of how fortunate I am. We don’t have a lot of money. We freelance in the Arts, so you can do the math. There have been years where all we had was $20 to spend on a gift for each other. There have been years where we could splurge. But, through it all, even in the toughest of times, we have had a roof over our heads and food on the table. We’ve had heat. We’ve had clothing. We’ve never had to wonder if we would be deported. We’ve never had to deal with being seen as ‘other’ or wonder if we’d ever feel safe and accepted again. We’ve never been discriminated against because of the color of our skin. We’ve never had to fall asleep to the sound of gunfire all around us, or beg for help from someone, anyone, who might be listening, who might save us.

There is a lot going on in our world right now – here and abroad. There is injustice, fear, war – and the innocents are the victims. In this world of corporate greed and power-hungry-driven wars, where animals are going extinct because of Climate Change, where money and oil and power are often the bargaining chips used by politicians and where cries for help are ignored because we aren’t there and those cries come from people who live far away and have a different skin color or a different faith or they’re from animals who have no one to save them – please consider giving to those less fortunate, to organizations who are there to help, to causes you believe in.

I’ve been doing that this year. I confess I haven’t always done that because I didn’t think about it or was worried about money or was simply in my own little bubble at the time.

Do it. You’ll be doing so much good. You’ll feel better about yourself. You’ll expand and grow and you’ll be reaching out to your brothers and your sisters, human and animal. I just gave to an organization providing aid and food and shelter to those who have had to flee Aleppo. I’ve also given to other organizations and I plan to give to even more. We are all one. And I include animals in that statement.

This is without a doubt the longest Instagram caption I have ever written. But, then again, it’s the most important.”

I don’t need to add anything else. Give. Give to those charities and organizations you believe in. Give to protect civil rights, to protect your fellow man, to protect the environment, to protect animals, to protect those who are in the midst of wars not of their choosing, to those who are literally caught in the crossfire, to those selfless advocates for the homeless, the needy, the disenfranchised, the sick, the lonely, those in need of food and shelter – I could go on and on.

That’s the true meaning of Christmas. Whether you’re a Christian or practice another faith, are an agnostic or an atheist, surely the examples set by Jesus, Mother Theresa, Buddha, Jane Goodall, Gandhi, Martin Luther King Jr., Nelson Mandela, Harriet Tubman, Oskar Schindler, Abraham Lincoln – anyone and everyone who has worked selflessly for the greater good – are what should guide us this holiday season.

Much love and Happy Thursday,

Sweet Visitors

December 14, 2016 at 8:45 am by Claudia

Yesterday, I made lists, started gathering some things together, cleaned and generally waited for the UPS truck to bring 5 packages to my door. It’s the Christmas season, however, and UPS is busy. So my favorite driver didn’t arrive at my door until 8:30 pm. Yikes! They work long hours at this time of year.

Along the way, I walked into the kitchen and saw this right outside the kitchen door:

This little one was smack dab in front of the now dead zinnias. Very close to the house. This is why I leave all those plants where they were when the season changed. Birds and animals need them.

I took all of these photos from behind the window in the kitchen door.

He was chomping on some grass on the edge of the chicken wire fence garden and then he looked right at me. (I was inside, of course. If I’d opened the door I would have scared them away.)

There was another deer up in the woods and one near the shed. Four of them.

They are so beautiful.

Oh good. You can see my old vacuum next to the shed (hidden from the road, I assure you) that will soon be on its way to the dump. It bit the dust and I got a new one last week. Oh, and my broken fan. They look like some sort of strange sculpture, rising out of the snowy landscape.

Soon we’ll be putting old sofas and rusty automobiles out on the front lawn.

I was able to get a better photo of the sansevieria flowers. Aren’t they pretty? They sure smell good!

A quick photo of the cottage porch wrapped in Christmas lights. It was actually too dark by the time I took this, so I’ll work on getting another shot at dusk.

Today? Lots of running around, buying what I need to take with me (except for perishables) so that I can start crossing things off my list.

It’s crazy time. And I’m going to miss my husband and sweet cottage – I can already feel it.

Happy Wednesday.

Making A List And Checking It Twice, No, Thrice

December 13, 2016 at 8:58 am by Claudia

She’s making a list and checking it twice. Actually, a lot more than twice.

But it’s not a Christmas present list. It’s the list of things I have to buy and/or pack to take to Hartford. I’ve finished getting Don’s presents – thank goodness for online ordering! Now, I have to work with the weather/snow and find time to run errands before I leave on Sunday. Added note: It’s only going to reach 21 degrees on Thursday and Friday – not necessarily the best weather for running around shopping!

Late afternoon yesterday after our snowfall.

The little spiky flowers (I’ll try to get an even better picture today) on the sansevieria. They have a sweet scent, which I like. Hello, Mom and Dad!

Bokeh.

More bokeh.

Sigh. Posts can only be so interesting right now, my friends. I’m a bit overwhelmed. I have a lot to do before I leave for Hartford. I’ve finished my initial script work, but I have to do a bit more.

I finally bit the bullet and ordered a mobile/small printer to take with me. Very portable. As much as I work on the road, I’ve really never had a printer that I could use directly – sometimes I’ve been able to use the printer at the theater, but this will be much more convenient. It’s a Canon Pixma printer and will, hopefully, be delivered today. Since I’ll be back in Hartford in April, it will more than pay for itself. At the very least, I can print out the daily New York Times crossword puzzle! I’m addicted, you know.

I want to share this article with you. There’s been quite a bit of news coverage here about this terrific idea. Glen Pannell, one of my former students in the graduate program in San Diego, is a terrific guy who – incidentally – looks enough like Mike Pence that he has been able to use it and run with it. He calls himself Mike Hot-Pence. And he spends hours every weekend in NYC, especially in Times Square, collecting money for Planned Parenthood, The Natural Resources Defense Council, the Trevor Project and LGBTQ youth. I’m more proud of him than I can say. Here’s the latest link. Click here.

How are you all doing? Have you finished shopping? Are you, like me, making lists and checking them more than twice? Spill!

Happy Tuesday.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
