Peonies, Roses & Green Grass

May 30, 2012 at 7:30 am by Claudia

Flowers, flowers everywhere here at Mockingbird Hill Cottage. The roses in the garden have started to bloom. The poppies have finished their bloom – my goodness, their bloom time is very short! Maybe that makes their vivid orange color all the more rare and wonderful.

And the peonies:

The scent is heavenly. The other day I was standing in the den wondering where this amazing scent was coming from and I remembered I had some in a vase on the coffee table. And I smiled.

Due to someone’s forgetfulness at an airport counter, I have a lovely bouquet of pink roses that Don brought home for me.

There are lots of worries in my life at the moment. I don’t know what I’d do without my garden. I can lose myself for hours there. There’s always something to do and I love doing it all. Even weeding. It is a healing, magical place – at least for me.

Speaking of healing, remember the state of our lawn after it was dug up for the septic work and the tree removal? I’ll remind you:

Depressing. Full of rocks. Lots of ruts.

Well, some of the ruts are still there – we’re working on that. Many of the rocks are gone. But many are still there. Nevertheless….here is how it looks today:

Much better, don’t you think? There are still bare patches, but we’ll seed again in the fall.

Happy Wednesday.

Those roses, especially, are just gorgeous! and your lawn looks like it’s coming right along. By mid-summer next year, it should be nice and full. We had a bare backyard because it’s so shaded. Last year we seeded with a shade lawn variety and watered faithfully all summer long. It’s pretty good this year, and by next year it should be great – just like yours will be!

I agree that gardening is therapeutic. Hope you enjoy a beautiful day.

What a difference some green grass makes, huh? …gardening is a form of therapy, I’m sure of it.

Grass fills in rather quickly so you may not have to seed much next year. But, my sweet friend, it IS looking much better. I know when we had to take out a tree because it fell within inches of our house it devastated us both. A Russian olive. It has the most fragrant smell to it and the bird got drunk on the berries. They loved it but it had to go.

Oh yes…much better! That must make you feel good! My poppies were here and gone too as were my first peonies. In their place are other colorful blooms that are growing all around them. I love this time of year in the garden!~Hugs, Patti

    Claudia,
I’ve also been enjoying peonies and their scent and will be testing the “gardening as therapy” idea. My best friend passed away almost 2 weeks ago; he had a heart attack. I hope you are able to find some peace as you go through your own trials.

Your lawn looks 100% better now! Oh, the healing power of gardens! I find weeding to be very therapeutic. My garden is my prozac. Your peonies are stunning! Love the color. The pink roses are beautiful.

My peonies should be open in a day or two and I can’t wait! Your lawn is coming back to life after all your hard work and rock slugging! ~ Maureen

Hey Claudia – my peonies are just coming out – I think I’ll go cut a bouquet for the sunroom. I just went back to one of your earlier blogs – baby robins. My next-door neighbour has a nest in her lilac bush. I’ve really been enjoying them. I was weeding my garden there last week and tossing the worms over the fence to the momma. She’s a little stressed by my cats but I’m trying to teach them to stay back and not worry the babies. She was teaching them to fly the other day so I kept the cats in – unfortunately a neighbour wasn’t so thoughtful and I had to pick up feathers etc on the neighbours yard the other morning. I really hate when people let their cats wander, especially at night. Not good for birds or the cats! I’ve had cats for 20 years and have never had a bird fatality. But I also keep them in my yard…J

You yard is looking ever so much better with some grass on it. The peonies are just gorgeous and I just noticed our neighbor’s poppies were open as of this morning. They are quite a delight to look at.

I am sorry that you are going through some stressful times right now, Claudia. I am sending up a prayer for you- xo Diana

Actually you have green fingers. The quantity and diversity of flowers that are in your garden makes me speechless. I do not have this gift. For this reason, lately I’ve been dedicated to making plants in miniature. It is difficult, but at least I do not feel guilty when it does not work … Congratulations on your beautiful garden!

Claudia, Your lawn is shaping up. It takes awhile, I know. Just this spring ours looked the best it has since we moved here….but after so much dry weather, it’s brown in places. Hopefully we have rain tomorrow. Smiles, Susie

Not having a property, I have none of those problems. But I can tell you that you have a beautiful property and your flowers are gorgeous. It’s easy to tell that you tend them with love. It’s a good thing that it provides you with a healing place. We all need those. Hang in there!

Oh those beautiful flowers. Such joy in a flower and its magical scent. I understand how weeding can be medicinal. I was just outside clearing another small patch. I cannot even look at the whole or I would never be able to tackle it…so small patches it is for me. Glorious gardening dear…

Gardening was always a good way to forget everything for me, too. I love your peonies and roses! Watch out for the weeds in that area of your yard :)

I’m pleasantly surprised at the grass Claudia, it really did do well considering all the obstacles – rocks, digging up, bad weather, chipmunks!!!!!!!!

Your peony is a beautiful color, and the unexpected rose bouquet couldn’t have come to a more deserving home!

    Love, Mary

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
