A Perfect Perch for the Dollhouse

October 7, 2009 at 8:57 am by Claudia

You remember my dollhouse? Well, it has been sitting on the floor of the den since my husband brought it home for me while I was still in San Diego. It needs to be placed on a table and I’ve been looking for one since July. I had three requirements: it had to be vintage, not too tall, and cheap. I’ve looked and looked. I saw tables that were too high, too low, too narrow, too deep, too ugly, too expensive…you get the picture.

Monday found my husband and I meeting at one of our favorite multi-dealer antique stores. I was, of course, still looking for a bookcase (no luck there) and a table. We searched all through the lower floor and then went upstairs. I tend to linger a bit longer in each booth, pouring through everything. Husband can get a little impatient. So he said “I’ll look around over there and see if I can find anything.” Okay.

Later, he signaled to me. “Honey, I think there’s something over here that might work.” Darned if he hadn’t found the perfect piece.

This chippy coffee table was piled high with other items for sale and when we cleared everything off, we saw that the price had been marked down. To $10.50. Yes, I cannot tell a lie. In fact, we kept looking at the price tag to make sure we weren’t reading the darn thing wrong. $10.50! It was solid and strong and perfect. Why it was marked down so low, I have no idea. Even the manager of the shop was amazed. We scurried out of there, table in tow. Score a big one for my husband!

Slightly chippy perfection.

Oh my gosh, perfect!

And it matches my television cabinet (bought for $5.00 at auction last year; I painted it, aged it and added new glass knobs.) Pardon the boxes under the table: they are full of furniture and fun things for the dollhouse.

So: Dollhouse – $35.00. Table – $10.50. Oh, I love a good deal! And that husband of mine has a good eye, doesn’t he?

I passed up a 19th century doll house in Ithaca NY back in 1980.

I am STILL thinking about it, and now your post makes me want to go out and find one again! I am having doll house envy…

BTW, it looks great on it’s new table!

It’s gorgeous, Claudia!!! Loved hearing yours, hubby’s and the store owner’s reaction to the LOW price. All I could think of is the IKEA commercial where the woman is running out of the store, yelling to her husband, “Start the car! Start the car!” because she got such good deals at IKEA and wanted to get out of there before they changed their mind!! ha ha…

Well, the table matches your TV cabinet perfectly! I’m looking forward to many more posts and photos as you enjoy decorating the inside of petite-MHC! (And I just love your rug! I think I’ve mentioned that before!)… Donna

Wow, what a deal! I love it when that happens. When I go shopping with my husband, he is the one that is too slow for me. He has to look at everything! The good thing about him going with me, is the fact that I can spend more money and not feel guilty! So it balances out! Blesssings, Martha

That is an amazing find! $10.50…and you don’t even need to do anything to it. Your dollhouse looks perfect on it and it compliments your $5.00 cabinet so well. Thanks for linking up. I always love seeing a nice piece of furniture find a nice home.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
