Phileas, Rain, Miniatures

May 11, 2026 at 8:24 am by Claudia

Late in the afternoon on Saturday, I wandered down to the mailbox, umbrella in hand, to get the mail.  I then wandered over to the area of the culvert we call Frog Pond and called out for Phileas. I sang a bit. Suddenly, on the periphery of my vision, something on the left leapt into the water, landing with a plop. I couldn’t see him under the water but our Phileas is still around! We were greatly relieved. Don looked for him yesterday and there was no response. We are accepting the fact that Phileas has his own life and is entitled to privacy and will not answer our questions as to where he goes. He is his own frog.

Rain all day long on Saturday, then Sunday started out as a sunny day, but turned gloomy later.

Taken yesterday morning, right after I watched a male and female wild turkey walk through our woods.

What else? I spent a few hours working on another project for the Beacon Hill. My friend Gwen sent me a 1:12 3D printed miniature cubby/cabinet a few months back. It’s the first 3D miniature I’ve modified. It came in basic white and I guess it’s made of some sort of plastic. I probably should have sanded it a bit, but I didn’t. I stained it in that walnut color and then painted and aged it. I wanted it to look like an old piece of painted furniture. I’m pretty happy with it.

Ir’s very hard to capture the color as it changes with the light.

Here it looks more green with less blue tones. I’ll try to get a good photo of it later today. That’s the wall it’s going on and it will be directly opposite the table and chairs. I didn’t want the living room to be too matchy, so I deliberately chose this color. I may play with it a bit more, but I’m pretty happy with it.

I’m not sure what I’ll choose to fill those cubbies. It won’t be books – more likely, some pottery. I had a vision of small rustic crocks, but these cubbies are rather small. I’d like whatever I display to look like a curated collection as the owners are collectors. We’ll see what I can come up with.

Last night, we watched Remarkably Bright Creatures  starring my pal Sally Field. It’s on Netflix. It’s a beautiful, powerful story and she is superb. Our friend Beth Grant is in it, as well. I cannot recommend it highly enough. You will be inspired and touched and moved to tears by the story. It’s based on a novel which I haven’t read, but I suspect some of you have.

Stay safe.

Happy Monday.

That cubby reminds me of your egg cup cubby.
Thanks for the recommendation about the movie. I’ll check it out!

laughing in agreement with you about phileas … and our earl. he is his own squirrel and has no obligation to us (though we don’t ask anything of him, either … just that he and his family and all his wildlife friends stay safe and outside)! glad you saw and sang to phileas. :)

love the cupboard and that beautiful blue-ish green color you chose. i wouldn’t have guessed it to be plastic. good work!

don’t have netflix, but will check on the book (thanks). glad you’re enjoying the show.

prepping for possible driveway repair. could start wednesday and be off-limits for at least a week. will be soooo glad when it’s done. relieved, actually. onward.

    happy, safe monday to everyone.

Anything that is construction – like and involves noise and displacement is not fun!

      Stay safe, Kathy.

I really liked the book, Remarkably Bright Creatures. I’m sure I’ll like the movie as well. Good job on that teensy-tiny hutch, too.

Thanks for the Netflix recommendation. I’m writing out another list of possible viewings for when I stitch. I can’t ever watch just to watch. My hands have to be doing something. Currently, it’s needlework. I’ll get back into knitting…some time.

The cabinet looks good. One would never guess it was plastic from the photos.

Good Morning Claudia! That cabinet has lovely bones! I have no experience with 3D printed objects… resins and such so can’t advise about the need to sand the surfaces. The green looks wonderful and I like furniture that is not matchy and shifts the color with the available light. I think you made a great choice for the “foreground” of this room… slim and against the wall but fill-able with tiny things that need to be seen up close! I can’t wait to see what treasures arrive for it! As for Phileas, I am sure his survival instincts are very strong and I am glad that he shows up from time to time to greet you! It is always reassuring to me that Nature puts up with us humans and mostly lets us survive too. And your porch looks like a wonderful haven!

I almost always hesitate watching a movie based on a favorite book. But in this case, I hadn’t read the book!

      Stay safe, Annette.

Claudia I love the cabinet!! I can’t wait to see it filled. I am excited to watch the Sally Fields movie. Saving it for after my colonoscopy on Wed as a treat to myself for enduring another medical test. Ugh.

We loved Remarkably Bright Creatures! The book is also excellent and the movie followed it very closely. We liked Alfred Molina’s voice for Marcellus.

I’m so happy that Phileas has returned. Yes….i know he should have a private life. However, once they’ve entered your life, it’s hard not to wonder where they are at all times. I haven’t seen our crane pair in ten days or so. I’m thinking they are nesting…it’s about that time. But, I can’t help but worry about them.

Cute cabinet…wonder what your residents will be collecting. Egg cups anyone? We’ll just have to wait and see I guess. Enjoy your day! ;)

      I always worry about them!

No egg cups. In 1:12 scale they’re just too small. Pottery of some sort, I think.

      Stay safe, Donnamae.

I dont get how the cabinet is 3d. Your porch looks really cozy. Youve got a frog, I have a beta fish, fly 6, the others have died. We have birds in the birdhouse my dad made. Its wonderful to wake to their singing. The eggs haven’t hatched yet. We have lilac buds on our bushes.

Welcome!

Welcome!

I live in a little cottage in the country with my husband. It's a sweet place, sheltered by old trees and surrounded by gardens. The inside is full of the things we love. I love to write, I love my camera, I love creating, I love gardening. My decorating style is eclectic; full of vintage and a bit of whimsy.

I've worked in the theater for more years than I can count. I'm currently a voice, speech, dialect and text coach freelancing on Broadway, off Broadway, and in regional theater.

Thanks for stopping by.
