We visited Emby and Sissy yesterday afternoon. It’s what I call a Sanity Visit. We needed to get away from the dreadful news from the White House and take a walk in the woods. When Emby saw us coming – he knows we can be counted on for carrots – he positively pranced over to us. He now gives us a kiss on the cheek or the neck. I love that boy.
He is the sweetest horse – he really is. Sissy was eating her hay and clearly preferred that to carrots, so although we called out to her, she was focused on the hay.
Then we walked back through the woods to our car.
It helped.
I went to the bookstore yesterday – another sanity saver – and prowled around, looking at magazines (nothing that called to me), new fiction, new non-fiction and, of course, mysteries. I was looking for something very specific, which you will see on the top of this pile of books:
Yes. The Constitution. We didn’t have a copy of it here and, in view of the flagrant disregard for the Constitution in evidence during the last week, I thought it would behoove us to have one on hand. You never know. They’re trying to clamp down on journalists. What’s next? Bloggers? Twitter accounts? Facebook?
Know your rights.
A Man called Ove has been recommended to me by several people, including my sister, so that went in my pile.
I’m fascinated by the cult of Scientology and I’ve read a lot about it. The very first book I downloaded to my Kindle was Going Clear. Cults in general fascinate me. What makes someone accept often absurd pronouncements by one person and then vow allegiance to that person, giving everything up for one – let’s face it – usually bogus belief system? It’s as if they deliberately put blinders on. I know it’s a complex issue and I’m not an expert on cults by any means, so I can’t speak to the whys and wherefores. I watched Leah Remini’s series on Scientology on A & E and really applaud her bravery in exposing this group. Anyway, her book is out in paperback and I grabbed it as well.
And then, A Gentleman in Moscow, which has been highly praised by nearly everyone and looks like a great read.
Book therapy, though I certainly don’t need more books on my TBR pile.
Some of the blind devotion and acceptance of anything that comes out of the-man-who-shall-not-be named’s mouth reminds me of cult behavior. Don’t research. Don’t check facts. Just parrot the lies over and over again until something kicks in inside your brain and you actually start to believe them. There’s a lot of that going on. Not with everyone who voted for him, of course, but for a lot of fervent devotees? Yes. You can tell by the tenor of conversations on Twitter and Facebook. There are lots of ‘he said it, so it must be true’ kind of statements. And it doesn’t seem to matter to them at all if they get a response that counters that statement with an undeniable fact, cited and proven. They simply refuse to accept it.
Isn’t this what happens with any dictator and/or fascist with a rabid following? A sort of brainwashing that allows the follower to suspend disbelief? I’m not saying it is the same thing as a cult, I sure there are differences, but it sure seems like one to me.
1984 is selling out online and at bookstores. There’s a reason for that.
In the meantime, bravo to the ACLU and to lawyers and protestors who dropped everything to help those who were and are being detained, who are fighting for their Constitutional rights. You make us proud.
Happy Monday.
Bridget says
Oh that sweet horse face! I would want to kiss that nose! It must be so nice to be able to visit them, and definitely a sanity saver.
I read A Man Called Ove and it is truly one of the best books I have ever read, period. I hope you like it.
That is, if we’re still gonna be allowed to read. You may recall that The Orange One doesn’t read books, because he “knows a lot of stuff.” Ugh.
Claudia says
And he can only handle the 140 characters of a Tweet. But he’s ‘very smart.’
Chris from Normal says
He has said repeatedly, “I’m like, a smart person”. WTH! I’ve had to refrain from watching the news because the stress is affecting my health, not to mention my sleep but my FB friends and family are keeping the information and fight going.
Claudia says
We don’t watch the news either, preferring NOT to see his face or hear his voice. We read the paper instead!
Chy says
Taking time away from this madness is just what you needed. Thanks for sharing your lovely day. I love Leah’s show and will have to look for her book. I grew up living in a small commune in a rural area but there was no political agenda or religious content. Just a group of like minded hippies living together. By the time I was ready for school, my parents moved us back to town and became conservative. I remember that time and have always loved the idea of families living together, sharing the work and helping each other. Not a cult of course, but coming together for a reason. I’m sure that’s how people get into cults but some there is no way out without violence or persecution. Sad.
A quick story to tell. My sister-in-law was a refugee back in the early 80’s and finally was accepted into Canada as a young girl with her family. I can’t imagine our life without her. She is perfect for my brother and an amazing citizen. She joined the ACLU yesterday. We may join today in solidarity.
Hope your Monday is restful. Enjoy your new reads!
X Chy
Claudia says
Love that you grew up in a commune and very interesting that your parents eventually became conservative. What a fascinating story!
Bless your sister-in-law, Chy!
Jan Routh Wells says
I can certainly see why you two and the horse have a mutual admiration society. He is a beauty! I’ve also had A Man Called Ove recommended to me by several people so it will be next on my list. This really has been a difficult weekend. I’m thinking more & more of searching for a cabin in the Smokies with no internet or tv ….. just a big pile of books and maybe some art supplies and just escape it all. Someone seems to have told this orange man that he gets to make all the decisions for our country without consulting anyone. I so dread seeing who will be nominated for the Supreme Court. May be a long week but today it’s to be 65 in my neck of the wooks so thinking I’ll get out & enjoy it. Hope you can do the same.
Claudia says
Oh, to escape it all. Live off-grid in a sheltered and hidden place where no one can find me! I totally get it.
Shanna says
I’m sort of fascinated by cults, as well. Not that I know too much about them, but fascinated in the way that I’m drawn to scary movies and stories. I’ll have to trump (sorry, but it is a verb, no?) my husbands aversion to watching Leah’s shows about scientology. I saw a part of one once, but he pooh-poohed my choice! Didn’t realize there was also a book. I, too, see a lot of cult-like behavior in our current political situation. It’s that scary willingness to see facts as propaganda and propaganda as fact.
Claudia says
It’s a good series. I watched most of it ‘On Demand’ and it’s very well done. Facts are propaganda. Propaganda is facts. Sound like it’s right out of the pages of 1984!
Margaret says
The ACLU received over $24 million in donations this weekend, six times more than their normal donation rate. Their membership has more than doubled since November. People are still voting.
Claudia says
That makes me so happy. I knew they were getting lots of donations, but this figure warms my heart, Margaret.
Margaret says
That’s six times more than their normal annual rate. I omitted ‘annual.’
Claudia says
Hurrah!
Carolyn Marie says
Claudia, I am bewildered as to how to respond to a good friend (not a Trump supporter) who, after a a discussion about the current occupant and all he did last week, stated “Now let’s hear 2 good things about him” I was flabbergasted! Some people just cannot get real.
Claudia says
It’s surreal. It’s as if she’s talking about someone normal. Normalization is the last thing we should do, right?
Vera says
Nice to have some sanity savers during these times for sure. Sweet, sweet horses. I was just talking books with a friend last night and told her that “A Man Called Ove” is my most favorite book from last year. Cannot recommend it highly enough. I also really enjoyed “A Gentleman in Moscow” (even though a couple of chapters dragged for me). Nice choices. Currently reading “The Underground Railroad” (Colson Whitehead) and although it is very good, it is disturbing enough that I have to put it down and take a break and have found that it is not a good book to read before going to sleep.
Claudia says
I imagine The Underground Railroad has some tough passages. It’s on my list, as well. I’ve heard so many good things about it, Vera.
jan says
When I was a teenager there was the Vietnam war, and people thought it was going to make people burn all copies of the Constitution, but I thought that if it happened, people all over would be grabbing paper and pen and would be saying “how did that part go again?” as they wrote down everything they could remember. I agree with you, we should all buy copies of the Constitution and keep them safe. You cannot deny the power of 100 million or so copies of a document. Have been loving the protests, and I read that aboard a plane when they heard the announcement of delays on the ground because of protests, the passengers cheered! There is just too many on our side! gives me hope!
Claudia says
That’s great! Love that they cheered, Jan!
Trina says
Hi Claudia,
I thought you and Don will get a kick out of this youtube. This is from the place I grew up. And it has something to do with what Don collects. I think you will know what it is when you see it.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qYjtaXuaFOs
Claudia says
I just watched it! Hurrah for Big Boy, Trina!
Mary says
I do have a copy of the constitution, right now and always it is on my book shelf with a small framed copy of Washington painting by Gilbert Stuart , proud Rhode Islander. My son hopes that Amendment XXV section 4 might get trump out I don’t see that happening. The VP must agree, I don’t see that ever would be possible. trump would probably lock himself in the Oval office and refuse to come out! The VP isn’t must better but still I cannot think anyone is as unstable as trump. I Resist…
Claudia says
Yes, I’ve read a lot about Amendment 25. The VP isn’t much better to be sure, but, though I disagree with him, he is sane. Maybe a mutiny in the White House, a la Mutiny on the Bounty?
Mary says
Forgot to say , how appropriate Goggle’s Doodle today honors Fred Korematsu.
Claudia says
I saw that. Google speaking out against the Ban. Bravo.
Susan says
I just ordered the book on top of your book stack. I am going to recommend it to others. They stopped teaching American History and Civics in our small town years ago. Neither of my children had classes in either of these subjects. We tried to make sure that we did all that we could to educate them here, at home, but they still missed out on so much. Come to think of it -I am going to order each of them a copy of this book, too! Thanks, Claudia~
Claudia says
How sad that they’ve stopped teaching such an important subject. How can we have respect for our history if it isn’t presented as valuable information by our public schools? The mind boggles.
Good for you for ordering copies for everyone! You’re welcome.
Chris from Normal says
I joined the ACLU and set up a monthly donation today.
Claudia says
Bravo!
Mary Andrews says
Claudia,
You have inspired me to get a copy of the Constitution . I haven’t been very diligent but have finally awakened!
A Man Called Ove was one of my favorite books, too. My Swedish friend corrected my pronunciation of “Ove” and said it rhymes with”Hoover”.
Your blog brings a measure of hope to me each day. Once again, thank you!
Claudia says
Thanks for the pronunciation tip!
You are very welcome!
Aunt Lou says
Knowing one couple who got caught by the same cult, her severe allergies were going to be cured/healed by Scientology. Their money all used, no cure, yet they still held to hope. Last I knew, she was still citing information to debunk established medical practices — not that there is anything wrong with questioning, but there is too much faith put in the questioners, IMO. :) To each… you know. It did hurt to see them go through their entire living… OK, I’ll stop.
Side note, people might read the actual document, rather than accepting what anyone tells us it says. It’s not a short document. I have the cold/flu thing and have not been able to concentrate that long, yet. 60 days, is what sticks in my fevered brain as the duration of the freeze.
If interested: http://www.cnn.com/2017/01/28/politics/text-of-trump-executive-order-nation-ban-refugees/
Aunt Lou says
Nope! Told you I am a mess! It’s 60 days to come up with suggestions a better system… I think… :P
Claudia says
Feel better, Aunt Lou
Claudia says
Yes, people give Scientology a LOT of money. Remini says she gave millions to them.
I’ve read most of the document. It shouldn’t even be for one day, let alone 60.
Aunt Lou says
Bans have been done by Presidents Carter and Obama.
Not saying this will work out well. Not saying it’s the best thing to do.
Definitely want to dispense with the Greek chorus for a while. :)
Claudia says
Those bans were very different from this one. And they were also handled very differently. This is about race, religion and ethnicity.
You might not want to visit here, then, Aunt Lou. Thought it won’t be every day, there will definitely be a Greek Chorus. I’m in the theater, remember?
Aunt Lou says
Theater reference deliberate. I consider news commentary a Greek chorus, presently superfluous. “Hey, person holding a microphone, I can see. Kindly do not tell me what was meant by what I just saw.” Sorry. If you’ve ever been present then watched their coverage, you know what I mean. The rhetoric is designed to catch attention. The plain truth doesn’t always do that. If you like, I will give you a very personal example, but not in public.
Two things.
What ever is done will now be pointed out to prove that President Trump is — fill in the blank with whatever the pigeonhole . This kind of closed mindedness is not in our interest. People did this to President Obama. Of course, the press could not pick on President Obama too much. Not PC. Now they can let themselves go, right?
AND I am not one of those gloating Trump supporters. I did not find anyone to support among the candidates who persevered. (I did vote. With faith that God can fix things, I did vote.) I do think we are going to end up in a police state if we don’t calm down. I do not mean we must be mute. I mean, if there is a disproportionate premature reaction to everything surrounding this White House, there will soon be an action to curtail our rights, in my opinion. I hope not. I pray not.
One more thing, why is this hatred of a man, and the people who hope he will turn out to be a good thing for this country somehow a righteous hatred? Trick question. I don’t believe in righteous hatred.
Oh, yes. I almost forgot. I wish you would temper statements, such as yours about what “this is about,” with an acknowledgement that it is your opinion. I found nothing in the document, itself, to support your statement as solid fact. I felt you left me no room for discussion, only rebuttal. Not that I have any discussion, at this time. :) I’m trying to look beyond the mud flying from all directions. I want to consider your opinion. I do not want to turn away from you as I feel I must from some others, feeling that attempting dialogue is futile.
God bless you, Claudia. I’m well aware that you’ve been having a tough time. I hurt for you in your losses. I pray for you a peace that passes all human understanding. Sure hope I don’t sound pompous, condescending or even patronizing or lofty. I really do care. Most of the people I know care, even those who have taken refuge in isolationism. <3
Claudia says
Not going to change the way I write. Everyone knows this is my personal blog and I write from my heart.
Dialogue is a good thing. However, there are moral absolutes that aren’t up for negotiation.
Aunt Lou says
Of course don’t change the way you write. That may have been my frustration over trying to find confirmation in a lengthy document while feeling like I tried to swallow a porcupine. OK, a very small porcupine.
What if “they” are trying to make you feel this way?
When everyone is running to the fire, it’s good to look around.
It may me a redirect so worse crimes may be committed.
Take care, Claudia.
Claudia says
I agree, Aunt Lou. I do think it’s a red herring. Chilling. xo
Aunt Lou says
I know.
Just saw tape of airport protesters taunting and chanting at an unconscious man, a Trump supporter, after he was beaten into unconsciousness by some of them.
Not the way.
Actually, hate wins. I’m praying. XO
Betsy says
You will enjoy Ove and check out ” Britt Marie was here” also by Fredrick Backman. Britt Marie made me laugh out loud multiple times!
Got some relief from politics yesterday at Comedy of Errors. OH MY GOSH! So clever and innovatative! Loved the costumes, music ,set, actors and of course the perfect speech dialect! : )
Betsy says
Also, highly recommend Hidden Figures. Quite an illuminating movie especiallyconsidering what is happening in our country right now. We do not want to go back to the 60’s and lack of civil rights for all.
Claudia says
I’ve heard nothing but good things about it and my pal and former student, Jim Parsons, is in it as well. We’ll definitely see it.
Claudia says
So glad you enjoyed it! Isn’t it a riot? My favorite: Chunmari, Chunmari – the Bollywood number. I could watch it again and again – in fact, I did!
Chris K in Wisconsin says
This is all so cult-like. Almost zombie-like, because of the way they blindly stagger after him and the absurdity he spews. When I see photos of that motley group in the Oval Office grinning like donkeys at him, I think a musical number should break out, because this just can’t be real.
So happy you are going to read “A Man Called Ove”. I absolutely loved it! It is an amazing story.
It is another gray/ grey (??) day here. I’m so discombobulated by all this craziness, I can’t even spell. I hope your Monday is going well.
Claudia says
It would be if I kept off Twitter, reading even more alarming news by the minute. I’m going to link to two articles tomorrow that are chilling but need to be read by everyone.
Vicki says
Maybe some wouldn’t agree, but I’m saying, God bless Senator John McCain.
I can remember, staying up late with my parents, to watch him and fellow POWs on TV, arriving back in America, so terribly ill/wounded/weak; such grave looks on their faces. My mother was so choked up, she couldn’t speak. I’ll never forget it, ever; how can any of us. I was a teen and the Viet Nam War had somewhat framed my whole young life from the time I was born…TV news every night, in the magazines of the day; the newspapers; classmates of my cousins killed; the son/only child of my mom’s Avon Lady, injured/disfigured/disabled for life while only in his 20s. My brother-in-law did two tours of that terrible war and, to this day, he can’t handle fireworks demonstrations because it is too reminiscent of battle, although it’s been 50 years since he was surrounded by exploding bombs.
I watched a video yesterday which focused on McCain’s cellmate in the Hanoi Hilton, and he spoke in detail of McCain’s bravery and heroism while imprisoned.
In the Wall Street Journal today, an article about John McCain…and I’m not saying I agree with everything McCain is about, but get this: “The maverick is unleashed. Sen. John McCain, famously independent-minded and fresh from his own resounding re-election victory, has served notice that he is the Republican lawmaker most willing to defy the new Republican president. Some fret over how to handle their disagreements with Donald Trump; Mr. McCain exhibits no such uncertainty…in short, frenetic as the new president has been, Mr. McCain is matching him step for step. Thus is a president willing to go rogue being matched by a powerful lawmaker—head of the Armed Services Committee and former GOP presidential nominee—prepared to do the same. ‘The main thing is, do the right thing,’ Mr. McCain said in an interview. ‘I feel, frankly, a greater burden of responsibility. The world’s on fire, we have more challenges than any time in the last 70 years and, with the chairmanship of the Armed Services Committee and whatever influence I have, I need to exercise it because the responsibilities are so great.’..he said he has good relations with key Trump security nominees…but, he said, he has no communication going with the president himself. This is a potentially serious long-term problem for Mr. Trump. The president is not especially susceptible to criticism from Democrats, which is predictable and easily dismissed, but opposition from Republicans, who control both chambers and every committee of Congress, and thereby the Trump agenda, is far more important…Republicans hold only a two-seat majority in the Senate, so the White House has little margin for error within the party there…Mr. Trump could ill afford it if Republican misgivings coalesced around a highly visible leader.”
I’m thinking, on the other side of the horror of what’s going on over the past few days, it’s going to be very interesting to see how things unfold.
From above article, “Early in the 2016 presidential campaign, Mr. Trump belittled Mr. McCain’s horrific Vietnam War experience, during which his Navy attack jet was shot down and, while seriously injured, he spent more than five years in a North Vietnamese prison. ‘He’s not a war hero,’ Mr. Trump said. ‘He’s a war hero because he was captured. I like people who weren’t captured.’
Who says stuff like that?
Claudia says
He does. He’s an ass, a bully, and a narcissist.
I am glad McCain, as well as Lindsay Graham, are speaking out. I often have problems with McCain, but at times – like this one – I am impressed by him. I just don’t want him to back off, which he has done in the past. He needs to stay in Trump’s face and not let up. McCain and Graham are clearly the voices of reason in this Republican party. The rest of them need to step up. I read that article – I think it’s more than a few weeks old. I haven’t seen the Republicans revolt, but they must surely be worried. I hope they grow some cajones and do something.
Vicki says
Oh, I didn’t know it was an old article. It says it just posted on msn five hours ago but, you know, sometimes they recycle stuff.
This was key when I was reading it: “In just over a week’s time, Mr. McCain has called the new Trump ban on immigration from a set of Muslim-majority countries a recruiting boon for Islamic State radicals; threatened to codify Russian economic sanctions into law to prevent Mr. Trump from lifting them; called the president’s decision to withdraw from the Trans-Pacific Partnership ‘a serious mistake’; and called the idea of imposing a 20% tariff on imports from Mexico to pay for a border wall ‘insane.’ The senator also served noticed that he will fight any effort to reinstate waterboarding or other forms of torture in interrogation of terror suspects; and declared he may oppose the Trump nominee for budget director because of his past opposition to military spending and troop deployments in Afghanistan.”
Good way you said it, Claudia. Stay in his face, Senator; don’t let up.
I’m feeling a flicker of hope. I have to.
Claudia says
Maybe it’s been updated? It sure sounds like it from what you’re quoting. Or maybe it just sounds like one I read? I should check it out again. Thank you, Vicki!
Janet in Rochester says
How lucky to have those sweet horses nearby. Being outdoors, fresh air, the sky, the landscape & of course, that great horsey scent too. Very therapeutic, good for the blood pressure. Keeping it real. Isn’t that what the kids say? We certainly need some of THAT now. Too much is SURREAL. But both last weekend & this one brought good news too. On Sat, I read on Twitter that the call went out for lawyers – I forget where – and 3000 stepped up to help!! In talking with one of them, I learned that more are signing up every day too. The group she belongs to, Lawyers for Good Government, is only ONE of the organizations helping to coordinate this. Brought tears to my eyes, as well as a solemn promise that I will never again make a crack about lawyers. Something tells me before this whole mess is resolved – however THAT happens – a LOT of people are going to show their true colors. It appears that all we Americans needed was an existential threat to our way of life – and we are now surprising OURSELVES with our own roar. It’s gratifying to see how many people back us up around the world too. In the UK, 2M signatures protesting Trump’s state visit. I bet even the Queen signed that! I know one thing – there was never any debate about allowing President Obama to visit. Which I’m sure is infuriating to Cheeto. Personally I’m still counting the days til he’s removed from office. One of the MANY good things about that is we’ll finally find out what the deal is with that hair. Which will just flatten Cheeto because narcissists cannot cope with ridicule. You know how on “Dateline” some platinum blonde will be charged with her husband’s murder, and then months later when the trial starts, she’s nearly unrecognizable because in the “joint,” you’re not allowed access to any hair care other than a cut? Twill be sweet to see Humpty revealed.
PS – thanks for mentioning John Pavlovitz. Have been reading & following him on Twitter ever since. He says what I would if I could write that clearly and beautifully.
Claudia says
He’s an amazing writer, isn’t he?
I am in awe and admiration of the lawyers, the protestors, the ACLU – all of whom ran to help at the nation’s airports. Bless them.
Bannon needs to be frog walked out of the White House ASAP. He is truly vile, in every way.
Linda @ A La Carte says
Sweet horses. My relief came in the form of Scout today, she is still ill so I watched her all day and will again tomorrow. She is starting to feel better and is so fun to play with and read too.
So I will add some books to my TBR list. One of my friends gave me a copy of Constitution and I don’t know where it is. If I can’t find it, I’m buying one. Ashleigh protested with some friends this weekend at the San Fran Airport. This orange man is scaring me so much. I won’t watch the news on TV, I just can’t take it. I see some bits on line and that will have to do.
Normally I read and comment early in the morning so I don’t see a lot of other comments. I really enjoyed reading the responses today and might need to visit twice a day now, morning to read the post and later to read the comments. We must stand up and fight! I’m going to join the ACLU also. I am in this fight til the end!
Linda @ A La Carte says
I went to the ACLU sight and they have pocket size copies of the Constitution 10 for $11.99 if anyone is interested. https://shop.aclu.org/product/ACLU-Pocket-Constitution-of-the-United-States
Claudia says
Oh, how cool! I’ll try to remember to pass that information on in tomorrow’s post.
Claudia says
Good for Ashleigh!
Don just joined the ACLU this morning!
Linda P. says
I, too, loved A MAN CALLED OVE. (Don’t know how if I can use html to italicize here: hence, the title in all caps.)
I don’t have a good sense of comic timing, but I hope I can lighten things up with my comment. Today I came across an article that claimed that the Women’s March was no grassroots effort but was instead financed by George Soros. (I personally had clicked on “Interested” on my local sister march’s FB page within forty hours of the election, so it seemed fairly grassroots to me!) Approving comments to that article pointed to many items of “proof” that the march was a Soros-financed endeavor, including “all those signs and pink hats.” Where did we think those had come from? one woman asked? While looking for the line to collect my non-existent check for marching, I’m still laughing at the idea that George Soros financed all our pink p****y hats. I remember all the discussions about whether such hats demeaned us or whether it was a taking-back of the word our new president had used to defile us. I remember women claiming they wouldn’t march if we were wearing the hats while others were holding parties to make signs and knit hats, offering them for free in our state to other women because we couldn’t sell anything on the state capitol grounds where the march was to begin and end. All the concerns got sorted out and we all loved marching among that sea of women, some in their (definitely not Soros financed) pink hats.
This morning, my gun-owning, lifelong-Republican, Vietnam-era-vet brother who voted for Clinton was sitting in his cardiologist’s office here in our red state. Six other people in the waiting room had all voted for our new president and were loudly declaiming this weekend’s “rioters” at airports, including ABIA. They, too, apparently, were paid operatives, and not there because of their own convictions. I’m assuming we’ve got crowds of people stashed away at various places in the country, waiting to be hustled out whenever a surprise announcement is made by the Trump administration? Perhaps Amazon is delivering them on site via drone? Delivery in two hours after ordering?
Claudia says
I’ve heard that Soros conspiracy theory floated around. Another way to try to invalidate the whole thing. And the paid operatives thing? Really? That’s also been floated by Trump followers from the beginning of the election cycle.
Insane!
Linda P. says
Mea culpa. I should have done a better job of editing my previous comment. May I plead that a mirgraine today keeps me from thinking clearly, which is true?
Claudia says
Nothing to apologize for! I hope you’re feeling better!
Judy Ainsworth says
I have been a member of the ACLU for I don’t know how long as long as I can remember We have got to support the people that fight the things we hate. I CANNOT Believe how people are playing games with their precious freedoms.Don’t take it for granted folks,it can happen here especially when you have the #1 man crushing our basic freedoms and not even slowing down!
Wake up America where this is going is NOT good!(of course we that read your blog already get it.) but maybe we could all yell it out our windows to neighbors that don’t see what is going on.
I am So Happy to be engaged with all of you terriffic gals and( Don) on an almost daily basis! This is a good, safe place to come. Love To You All! Judy -A-
Claudia says
This is just the beginning – and someone who so far has supported him will find his/her freedoms suddenly threatened and will realize that they were never safe with this man in the White House.
Dianne says
Thank heaven for the ACLU; they are the heroes of the day! Saw a picture of an immigrant family in handcuffs (John Pavlovitz); father, mother. and a tiny little girl in handcuffs! Who in this insanity puts a tiny little girl in handcuffs???? She reminded me of my little granddaughter and my heart breaks for her……..can’t stop thinking of her and desperately hoping someone came to her aid; Trump is evil personified……I am at the point of wishing someone would drag that evil monster out of the white house by the scruff of his ugly neck……we cannot abandon all those who are suffering these injustices ; we must remain in place no matter how difficult and painful it is.
So very fortunate you have the horses bringing peace to all those who visit them……Dianne
Claudia says
And Sean Spicer – when asked about a five year old girl being detained – said “…to assume that just because of someone’s age or gender or whatever that they don’t pose a threat would be misguided and wrong.”
Always classy and compassionate, right?
Carol Morley says
My son and I have signed the petition mentioned here in “The Guardian”, a UK newspaper. I copied it a few minutes ago. If you visit the website, look at the protest placard photos. Although there are Trump supporters here, the upsurge of protest is considerable. Even Prince Charles has a veiled pop in the news.
The petition is against Trump coming on a state visit.
Petition watch:
The number of signatories against the planned state visit is now at more than 1.65 million.
The rival petition backing the planned state visit has just topped 90,000.
And more than 70 MPs have signed an early day motion calling on the Speaker to prevent President Trump addressing Parliament.
All of you are not alone in abhorring the “Fanta Faced Fascist”.
Claudia says
I saw footage of a protest in London and have been following the petition. It is wonderful to know we have allies that abhor what is happening in our country. Please know, Carol, that the majority of Americans do not want this man in office and are frightened and appalled by what it going on. Thank you.

I am near the end of A Gentleman in Moscow and I don’t want it to end! This book is a balm to my soul, a reminder that amidst all the craziness of the world, there are still kind & caring people. I don’t want to give anything away about the book & I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. Another book that is recently back in print is It Can’t Happen Here by Sinclair Lewis, it is on my “to read” list.

Oh good! I can’t wait to start it, Debbie! And I’ve recently read about It Can’t Happen Here and I want to read that, as well.

leah remini’s project for a&e renewed my interest in reading more about scientology as well, and i read her book and janet reitman’s book, “inside scientology,” last week. enjoyed both. this week, i started lawrence wright’s “going clear” book. i’d already seen the “going clear” special on hbo last year or the year before, and that’s certainly watching on-demand if you see it available. –suz in ohio

I’ve seen it, Suz. You’d better believe I watched it when it first aired. Though I’d love to see it again and I just might do that. I haven’t seen Reitman’s book. I’ll have to check that out. Thank you!
