Post Frost

October 14, 2012 at 10:08 am by Claudia

Friday afternoon found me hurriedly snipping all the flowers still blooming in the garden before a frost hit later that night. It’s too early. And it was even more frustrating because the rest of the week promises fairly warm temperatures. Today it’s supposed to be 69 degrees. What the heck?

The hanging plants from the porch spent the night on the kitchen table. All of the potted porch plants were nestled together on and under one of the benches and covered with sheets.

I have vases throughout the house full of pretty flowers.

My newish hydrangea has been shorn of all its blooms.

I love these pink tinged flowers. I’ll let them dry here in this vase.

The catalpa didn’t drop all of its leaves at once, but it dropped many of them throughout the day. (I’ll take some photos later today.) The hyacinth bean vines I have running along the fence bit the dust. So did the sweet potato vines. Sob. I know it’s all part of the life cycle of a garden but, nevertheless, it makes me sad.

I spent the day mowing the lawn and raking leaves. Some of the leaves I could just mow over and mulch. But there are certain areas of the yard where the massive amount of fallen leaves is just too deep to mow. I have still have a bit more mowing to do but its raining today.

Ah well, I’ll be forced to drink hot chocolate and crochet another Obsession Scarf.

We’re watching a lot of baseball this week. If my Red Sox can’t be in the post season, they were rather dreadful this year, then I will cheer for the Tigers (my home town) and the SF Giants.

How are you on this Sunday morning? What are your plans for the day?

The same thing happened here. We have had such warm temps every day and then boom one night of cold and my flowers were nipped and then back up to very warm days. Ah well, that’s nature I guess. I’ll be happy to toast a cup of hot chocolate with you!

    Big Hugs,

Claudia your photos are amazing. Very beautiful. It’s raining here too. I want to snuggle on the couch and catch up on some of the shows I have DVR’d.

We had rain and thunderstorms on Friday and sent them your way. Today it’s getting up to 86. We lost screen trees and potted trees on the porch to frost a couple of years ago. I’ve never paid any attention to that, but will from now on ~ knowing it can be prevented by moving plants in or covering them. There’s always something to learns from you Claudia. (**

We’re baseball fans too, and watched Detroit win last night. Well I did, hubby snoozed in his recliner.

    Have a great week.

We haven’t had a frost yet, so the flowers are still pretty. Nice warm days this week so they should last awhile longer. Busy today cooking, sewing, and fluffing my booth so I better go hop in the shower. Have a great Sunday.

Same here, the hottest, driest summer on record, then, boom, cold and frost. Actually had ice on the dish of water I keep out for the bunnies and strays. All my lower-growing plants are done for, but my climbing rose is still blooming, and is covered with buds. It is supposed to be warm all week,so I will have a little longer to enjoy it. Had fierce storms last night, but thankfully no damage here.

I cut all my roses because last year during the first frost, they suffered. They are nicely arranged in a little vase.

I know that they keep predicting frost here, but it really hasn’t come by to visit…
I am leaving the leaves as long as I can, might be using them as a garden mulch, and the colors are so beautiful.

Yes, I leave all the leaves on my garden beds alone. They make a nice mulch – I rake them away in the spring.

Your hydrangea are beautiful, Claudia. Well, I went out onto the deck and see that my sweet potato vines didn’t make it through the night either. But, I still have some herbs and a rose bud-maybe I’ll snip the bud and bring it in to bloom. Hmmm, rain this morning, now sunshine-not sure what I’ll do today. Since we had morning rain, I don’t know if the vendor I like will be at the local flea mkt-guess I could just go check. Enjoy your day!

We’ve had our frost a couple of weeks ago. Today it is raining buckets. I guess I will just do a few things around the house…things that I have been putting off……I got my 2 amaryllis in the mail yesterday…so I can pot those up. I just planted my never blooming orchids in a new medium yesterday :) Do you have orchids?…I need help.

I’ve only had one orchid – when I was working for 6 months in San Diego. It only lasted 3 months so I’m not the one to give advice on orchids, Balisha!

After church and being treated to lunch out by my mother in law my husband and I are going to kick back and enjoy the peace and quiet. The weather here has been lovelier than usual the past few days and we’re expecting temps
to not rise above 70 next week. That is kind of cool for floridians, we so look forward to this time of year. Our oak leaves have started to fall slowly and the grass will need to be cut at least twice more so there’s still plenty of out door work to do. Claudia your flowers are so beautiful! I know you get a lot of enjoyment from them. I really enjoy
our big oak trees, the way the sunlight filters through the leaves, the way they dance in the wind. Nature can sure put on a lovely show.

Yesterday we had winter coats and hats on for the parade and by mid afternoon all coats were off……

All that crazy weather sounds like TEXAS weather.
temperatures all over the place. We had a nice thunderstorm roll through the state last night …and it seemed to linger long in our area. I think it rained here most the night.
Glad I got my laundry finished and off the line before it started to roll through.

    My team…best all season and threw it away the last two games of the season. Go. Rangers. {pout}
    have a great day!

You’ve inspired me to cut some of my hydrangeas and bring them in, even though they aren’t their pretty purple, but they are more violet and silver. I see them out the window. We’re just enjoying a quiet grey Sunday with no appointments or commitments. Oh yes. ((hugs)), Teresa :-)

It’s a tricky time of year, but it sounds like you know just what to do. I am totally in love with your pink tinged hydrangea! Gorgeous! I planted one by my front door this summer, and she promptly looked as if she died! But a month later she started putting out new shoots and now she is in full leaf. I am hoping for blooms next year. I am thinking I may need to cover here this winter even though Raleigh doesn’t get too cold. Frost is a surprise visitor all too often!

Well, it’s now Monday so I think that tells you that our Sunday was a bit harried.

But this is a new week, so I’m hoping things will slow down just a tad.

Sorry about your weather. I was outside yesterday after the days previous being cooler, and I got overheated. But I have a new hat my sister sent me this summer for my birthday so I plan not to do THAT again. ;-)
