A little story for you:
The only clock we have in our bedroom is the digital clock on the cable box. Don usually puts a framed photo of us on our wedding day in front of the clock so he can’t see it at night. On Sunday night, we went to bed knowing that one of us had to get up in the middle of the night to let Scout out. When this happens, we figure whoever wakes up to go to the bathroom around 3 or 4 in the morning will also go downstairs and let her out. It’s something neither of us look forward to.
So. We go to sleep. I wake up to go to the bathroom, but I haven’t been sleeping all that long and I know it’s too early to let her out. So I go back to sleep. I wake up again after what I know is a solid chunk – several hours – of sleep. I have to go to the bathroom. So I get up, walk across the room, move the photograph to see what time it is. It says 12:15. I know my brain is fuzzy, but it seems like I slept a lot longer than an hour. And I’ve already visited the facilities once before. I can’t figure it out. So I go to the bathroom and I head back to bed. But I’m so perplexed that I can’t get to sleep for a while. I cuddle up to Don and finally go back to sleep.
I wake up, knowing I’ve slept about an hour or so more.
But it’s light out. What the ???? How can that be? I went back to sleep at around 1 am, slept for a little more, and now it’s light out? And that means I didn’t get to Scout in time. I jump out of bed, get dressed, run over to the clock.
It still says 12:15.
No wonder I was confused. I run downstairs, where Ms. Scout is sleeping peacefully and the clock shows me it’s after 7 am. No accidents, thank goodness.
And then I look out the door and there’s snow on the ground. I feel as if I’m in the Twilight Zone.
When Don gets up, a bit later, he yells downstairs and asks me what time it is. I say 9 am. It turns out he went through the same thing during the night. Got up, checked the clock, decided it was too early to let Scout out, went back to bed. When he finally woke up in the morning, he went to check the clock and it said 12:15 and he thought he’d slept until noon. And then he saw snow.
I have to tell you we were both feeling as if we were living in an alternate reality for several hours. It took a bit of time to shake it all off.
Later in the day, I unplugged the cable box, let it reboot, and it corrected itself.
I cheated. My plan is to purchase one a month. Technically, this should have arrived in April. Ah well. I love this simple feather motif.
And there it is on the shelf, along with its fellow Austens.
The egg cup I ordered from Etsy arrived yesterday. I had to wash it and spray a little Febreeze on it, as it clearly came from a smoker’s house. I used to smoke. I smoked for about 5 years. I can’t believe that I smelled like smoke during those years. It completely grosses me out now. Don, too. I quit in 1985. Don quit in 1986. Thank goodness. We met in 1994, so we were well rid of the habit by that point.
Here he is. He’s a little Japanese boy. Like my little cowboy egg cup, he’s sitting with his legs stretched out. These were made in Japan in the 1930’s. Apparently, there are others in this particular design, though I’ve only seen the cowboy and this little guy.
I’ve always wanted to add this one to my collection, so I’m happy he’s finally here. Marked: Japan.
Isn’t he adorable?
Happy Tuesday.

Isn’t one’s mind so powerful yet so suggestible? I wear a wind-up watch and when I forget to wind it, I’m in all sorts of time zones! Fortunately, I’m used to it now, so I just check the cell phone for the correct time, and adjust, and wind, the watch. Your new boy is adorable. I love the expression on his face…of what little bit of mischief is he thinking?!
Claudia says
I know! He looks like he’s up to something!
Deb Price says
Please forgive me. I was really laughing tons while reading this!! I’m glad you fixed the clock and that Scout was fine. I will probably giggle all day about this! Of course, it is now going to make me check my clock all night long.
Hugs to all of you,
Deb
Claudia says
Makes you realize how dependent we are on the clock being accurate!
Sarah says
Well, Claudia, I have the exact same Shakespeare Books and I couldn’t let them sit on the shelf alone (they don’t anyway) so I had to order a Jane Austen Book to make them more comfortable. Silly, I know. My first Austen Book arrived yesterday, Pride and Prejudice. I have paperback copies, but these editions are just too lovely to pass up. Thanks for sharing.
Claudia says
Aren’t they beautiful? I’m so happy you bought Pride and Prejudice!
And it’s not silly at all!
Sandra says
One more egg cup to treasure and behold. I have so enjoyed seeing your collection unfold and your background notes, too.
Claudia says
Thank you, Sandra!
Doris says
Claudia, your new egg cup fits right in with your collection. He is a cutie. Doris
Claudia says
He sure is. Thank you, Doris.

I ran into JoAnn’s Fabrics one day and of course stayed longer than I had planned. I figured I was in there for about an hour. I left the store and drove away. I looked at the car clock it showed I was in there for over four hours. You want to know the first thing that I thought? Lost time. I had been abducted by aliens! I turned on the radio and it took quite a few minutes before they gave the time. My dashboard clock was wrong! Thank goodness, no aliens. But then I thought “I need help.”
Claudia says
Oh lordy! That’s funny, Tana! You gave me a good laugh this morning.
Linda @ A La Carte says
The time and the clock! I’ve done the same thing and it does get me fuzzy. Glad there were no accidents. Love the new egg cup! He looks sorta like a little sailor boy to me! I love adding to my collection also. The new book is also gorgeous!
hugs,
Linda
Claudia says
Thanks, Linda. Maybe a little Japanese sailor boy? Who knows?
Chris k in Wisconsin says
Love the story. It is so funny… with digital clocks we (at least I) remember those exact times. So, I say “I was up at 2:23 last night.” Years ago we sort of rounded those numbers more than we do today, so I likely would have said “I was up around 2:30 last night.” The digital age. And it always amazes me that I remember those exact times! And Sweet Scout slept through it all!!
Love the new egg cup. He does look a bit naughty… like he is asking for forgiveness for whatever he got into!
Claudia says
At one point, Don looked at the clock and didn’t see one of the digits and thought is was 1:15 am. We were completely off!
Nancy in PA says
Claudia, could the feathers depicted on the book cover be pens? You know how important personal correspondence was in Jane Austen’s works. The feathers appear to be trimmed like pen nibs.
Thank you for the photos of Scout yesterday. She is so enchanting.
Claudia says
They might be, Nancy. I’ll have to look more closely and maybe do a little research.
Judy Clark says
Funny – great laugh to start my day off! Love your new eggcup. Precious!
Judy
Claudia says
Thanks, Judy! Love to you.
Betsy says
Your story was my “Good Morning”, today and what a hilarious way to begin the day. It must have been very disorienting. And to think Scout slept through it all. I wonder if she heard the two of you up at different times and wondered when her turn to go potty would ever come? The egg cup is adorable and I love your new book.
Blessings,
Betsy
Claudia says
She might have heard us, but it turns out she didn’t need us!
Barbara W. says
I love my set of Jane Austen books.
These editions are not available locally, so thank you for blogging about them. I may never have found them otherwise.
I can’t powernap after work or else I become completely disoriented. The last time I did that, I fell asleep at about 5 pm, only to be startled out of sleep by the telephone. I looked at the (digital) clock and then blasted my colleague for calling me at 6 am. Oops. It was actually 6 pm the same evening.
We have a four day weekend coming up, but sadly the weather is going to drop back to freezing temperatures with sleet and snow. I have been watching reruns of Alan Titchmarsh’s gardening shows and now I desperately want to get outside to dig and plant. Spring has to be out there somewhere waiting..
Claudia says
We’re watching the weather right now. We’re supposed to get either snow or rain in the next hour. Make it stop!
Vicki says
Hi, Claudia. Your posts yesterday and today really gave me a chuckle. Such an anticlimax, initially, with Scout turning around and going right back in the house, then you two with the clock and the snow this morning…I’m telling you, you may need a nap this afternoon after all that interruption.
The books look lovely on the shelf. My own copies are drifting in little by little and it’s all because of you; I wouldn’t have known about them otherwise, so thanks. Beautiful collection, to be read again and again.
I love how the little egg cup guy has his feet stretched out in front of him; looks like a sweet child.
Can’t believe you’re having snow again; I thought that was done for you. We’re having a blissful fog blanket this morning which is unfortunately breaking apart now, which means we’ll steam as the day gets hot, but I try to enjoy the moment. It gave me some pleasant coolness while I did some outside morning chores. Let’s hope your snow melts fast.
Claudia says
It will. Nevertheless, it’s disheartening. All I want to do is get outside and do some clean-up on the property and the weather is not helping at all.
Janet in Rochester says
I can relate to your “Twilight Zone” adventures. One morning when I was a freshman in high school, in the deepest part of Winter when it’s still dark at 6 am, I rose as usual, brushed my teeth, got washed and dressed, made my bed, grabbed my armload of books [these were the days before backpacks] and headed downstairs. Passing my parents’ room I heard my Mom murmur, “Janet, it’s only two-thirty in the morning. Go back to bed, honey…” I had totally thought I’d slept a full 8-9 hours, or whatever I used to at the time. Felt very “Twilight Zone” to me as well. Positively weird.
Claudia says
Very funny story! It throws you off for the rest of the day!
Barbara says
Hahaha. I thought I was the only one that had to block the light on the cable box. The older I get the darker I like the room. Love the books and their cover. There is nothing like a collection of beautiful book covers.
Claudia says
The light on the cable box doesn’t bother me because I figure my eyes are closed, anyhow. But Don? Has to have it blocked!
Nancy Blue Moon says
What an adorable little naughty boy..those books are just so lovely..Oh what a funny story..at least it is now..I’m glad that Scout did not have to pee last night..lol..
Claudia says
Me too! I would have been out of luck. Thank goodness she surprised me, that girl!
Donnamae says
Great story about the clock…made me giggle! That’s only happened to me once, when the power went out…and I remember so well, feeling like I was in an episode of The Twilight Zone! Glad Scout slept through it! Your little guy is a cute addition…he does have a rather sheepish look on his face! ;)
Claudia says
It really feels like you’ve gone to an alternative universe or the twilight zone….
Pat says
Oh Claudia- not sure to laugh or feel bad for yall! Not sure which is worse — the time fracture or the snow!
On top of it all– it could have been worse– if Scout had an accident.
The egg cup is cute! I can see why you bought it. It suits you!
Claudia says
I really love that cup. Can’t stop looking at that adorable face.
And kudos to Scout’s bladder!
Deb says
Glad Scout made it through the night and also glad for her she doesn’t live here in CT. It has been snowing steadily since 4 PM and the yard is again covered in snow the weather man says we are not getting. I think they have all decided to fib to us viewers so we don’t collectively go off the deep end.The woods in back would be quite pretty if it were Christmas Eve…which it is not!
Claudia says
It snowed here too. I was horrified! It has melted, thank goodness. I had the same reaction as you. I pulled the blinds because I didn’t want to see it!
Debbie in Oregon says
What a crazy way to start the day – that’s pretty funny. Things like that do put a person out of sorts for a while. I definitely had to laugh over Don thinking he’d slept until noon!
Love the new egg cup.
Claudia says
I’m telling you, Debbie, we thought we were in the Twilight Zone!
